Record of Success and Destinations - 2024

• We have a strong record of Attainment and success in external exams.

• 80% of our Y13 students went to University – 75% at their first choice.

• 3 students went to Oxford University

• 41 students went to Russell Group Universities – Edinburgh, Durham, Leeds, Nottingham

• Students are studying a wide range of courses including Medicine, Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Sport, Film production, Law and Psychology.

• 11% of students have gone on to apprenticeships or employment.

Challenges and Opportunities of A levels / BTECs

• Most students take 3 A levels / BTECs (10 hours per fortnight).

• General RE & Personal development

• Supervised study periods

• A levels & BTECs are a lot more demanding than GCSEs.

• Subject content is more difficult

• Exams and coursework are more challenging

• Gradings are A*-E in A levels and Distinction*, Distinction, Merit and Pass in Vocational BTECs.

• New ways of working

Expectations of work

• Study periods where students are expected to manage their own time and direct their studies.

• 5-6 hours of independent study per week for each course.

• Work-Life Balance.

• Part-time work should be no longer than 10 hours per week.

Initial Assessments

• To assess suitability of courses.

• Follow up meetings will take place if there are any concerns about subject choices.

Supporting your Child in Sixth Form

• Show interest in their work and studies

• Create a work space for study / revision

• Keep them healthy

• Encourage a good routine

• Manage exam nerves

• Help your child to start planning their next steps, attend University Open day visits

• Encourage your child to take part in enrichment opportunities

• Encourage them to think very carefully about outside commitments

Please note

• The following items are not permitted: hoodies, sweatshirts, leggings, jeans, trainers

• No garments bearing a slogan

• Shirts and blouses should be tucked in

Attendance & Punctuality

• Strong attendance (97%) is vital to develop the knowledge and skills to perform well in exams and coursework.

• If students miss lessons, they develop significant gaps in their leaning.

• School day starts at 8:30 and ends at 3:00.

• Students are allowed out for lunch: 12:25 – 1:15

• Parents / Carers should phone school on the first morning of absence: 565 8904.

• Driving lessons should not be booked during the school day.

• Avoid taking holidays in term time.

• Poor sleep patterns

Common Pitfalls in Sixth Form

• Not making effective use of study periods

• Lack of structure / organisation

• Lack of independent study

• Lack of work ethic

• Poor attendance

• Phones on while working

• Too much part-time work (max 8 hours per week)

Sixth Form Bursary

A bursary is money that you can use to pay for things like:

• clothing, books and other equipment for your course

• transport and lunch on days you study or train

• visits to higher education providers or educational visits

Bursary for students in vulnerable groups

You could get a bursary worth up to £1,200 if at least one of the following applies:

• you’re in or you recently left local authority care

• you get Income Support or Universal Credit because you’re financially supporting yourself

• you get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit

• you get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in your name and either ESA or Universal Credit

Discretionary Bursaries

You could get a discretionary bursary if you need financial help but do not qualify for a bursary for students in vulnerable groups. The Trust’s eligibility criteria is:

• Students living in a low-income household – household income below average regional salary. £35,562

• Students who have additional responsibilities, such as being a young carer or parent.
