Chapter 7 – The night the Dragon came back. One stary night the dragon came back to Ewan’s bedroom and crashed through the window. Ewan realised straight away that something was different. It didn’t look fierce and dangerous anymore. It looked sad and worried. It bent down and let Ewan onto its back. Ewan was scared but he climbed onto his friend’s back anyway. He thought he should help the dragon. The dragon took off high into the sky. It was amazing, flying through the air on a stary night. Ewan could see the whole town from up there. By the time they reached their destination, it was nearly morning. The dragon’s cave had been destroyed. There was lots of machinery around and as soon as Ewan saw it, he knew what had happened. Ewan went to find Sam but the dragon stayed behind. He was scared of the humans and he knew Ewan was going back into town. He knew his forest wasn’t safe anymore but it was the safest place he knew. When Ewan arrived at Sam’s house, he climbed up the drainpipe and through his window. “Wake up Sam”, whispered Ewan not wanting to disturb Sam’s parents. “Wake up! Sam, it’s urgent! SAM!!” Sam didn’t wake up but then Ewan noticed an alarm clock. The time was now 6:30 and he quickly set the alarm for a minute later. The alarm rang quietly. Ewan quickly switched it off but it was enough to wake Sam. “Eurgh, what is it? I don’t wanna go to school, Mum” groaned Sam. “But it’s the weekend, it’s very early in the morning… and I’m not even your Mum!” blurted Ewan. “Ewan, why are you here?” asked a confused Sam. “Follow me. Quick! I’ll explain later”. By the time the boys were half way back to the cave, it was almost 7 o’clock. “Oh no” said Ewan. “They’re probably already there”. “Who?!” cried Sam. “Just hurry up. We need to get there fast. If they see him, they’ll kill him!” “Who is going to kill who? You’re not making any sense”. “I’ll explain as we go.” said Ewan. “Come on.” The boys walked quickly over the hills as Ewan explained. “Well… the dragon woke me up tonight and flew me to the entrance of his cave. It was totally destroyed and there was mining equipment all around. The miners are digging in his cave. If they discover him, they’re sure to kill him”. “Oh, no” said Sam. “I know he tried to kill me but he’s actually quite nice and he’s a beautiful creature. We can’t let them kill him. Come on let’s go”. They arrived at the dragon’s clearing. There were lots of people with guns who were taking aim to fire at the ancient creature. The dragon was cowering on the ground, looking petrified. One man who seemed to be the ringleader, shouted to get their guns ready. Ewan jumped in front of the dragon to protect him. The ringleader shouted to aim higher and fire. At the same moment, Ewan jumped up and Sam jumped in front of him. Because they were both jumping, they ended up both being shot to the ground. Ewan and Sam took one last dying breath and then slumped to the ground.
Silence fell across the clearing and before the miners could do anything the dragon started to roar, but not an angry roar or even a sad one. It didn’t even sound like an actual roar. The miners looked up in fear as the dragon shouted “Ararr, ararr”. Suddenly, a phoenix flew out of one of the holes in the cave and cried on the two dead boys. Amazingly, Sam opened his eyes followed by Ewan. Sam
