Welcome from the Principal I am delighted to welcome you to Stoke Damerel Community College Sixth Form. It is an absolute privilege to be Executive Principal and build on the standards and performance of the College and to share my passion for supporting and developing students to realise their potential and prepare them for the next journey in their lives.

Our Sixth Form is a vibrant and forward-thinking community of teachers and learners.

Our students, staff and governors believe that Stoke Damerel Sixth Form is a very special place — caring, happy, aspirational and high-achieving.

We have an excellent teaching and support staff team and access to excellent training providers who all demonstrate and encourage a lifelong love of learning, both within and beyond our curriculum. We appreciate the individuality and unique strengths and talents of each student and encourage everyone to invest in their education. We take great pride in the fact that more and more of our students enjoy success in every possible way and at every level.

Making the right choice of Sixth Form is one of the most important decisions for a family and I hope that this prospectus will enable you to discover a little more about us and our aspirations for your future. The right pathway for you Stoke Damerel Sixth Form is a vibrant learning environment which offers many opportunities to learn new skills and take on new challenges. You will have a personal tutor to support you and ensure that you achieve your very best and at the end of your time with us you will leave as well-rounded individuals.

There are two pathways you can follow in the Sixth Form:

1. Level 3 Pathway Students choose 3 subjects. They can be either Level 3 BTEC or A Level, or a mix of both.

Stoke Damerel offers the following subjects: Art Biology Business Chemistry Child Development Computer Science Drama English Literature Further Maths Geography Health and Social Care

History Hospitality and Catering ICT Maths Media Studies Photography Psychology Physics Sociology Sport (single / double / triple)

If you wish to study A levels you will need to achieve Grades 5-9 in English and Mathematics plus at least three other subjects. You will generally need to achieve at least a Grade 6 in the subject you wish to study.

If you wish to study BTECs you will need achieve Grades 4-9 in at least 5 GCSE subjects and for some BTEC subjects these must include English and Mathematics.

2. Vocational Pathway At Stoke Damerel, we pride ourselves on the enormous range and variety of training options we are able to provide. We work closely with a number of established Training Providers across the city to offer courses in sectors which include: ;• Administration and Customer Service • Animal Care • Carpentry • Construction trades including brick, plastering,.painting and decorating.

• Health, Social, Childcare • Information Technology • Vehicle mechanics & marine engineering • Sport and Recreation & Public services • Beauty Therapy and hairdressing We have a dedicated Vocational Qualifications Manager who will support you through your training and the additional subjects you may need to study.

We work closely with the training provider and this ensures that our track record in successful outcomes for our Vocational students is outstanding and we are hugely proud of this important aspect of our Sixth Form.

If you have any queries about the range of Training courses on offer – you can contact the Vocational Qualifications Manager to find out more or to organise a meeting to discuss your options. Maths and English Qualifications If you are yet to achieve a level 5 or above in your GCSE Maths and/or English, you will need to continue studying these subjects while in Sixth Form. We will provide tailored sessions where you will work with a specialist Maths or English tutor who will help you maintain and develop these skills. If ready to do so, you will then be entered for your exams to improve your grades.

This is a requirement of all Sixth Form students in the UK and something we value greatly. These literacy and numeracy skills will be crucial for you when you move on from Sixth Form.

Supporting you to achieve Sixth Form life is not just about academic study but for preparing you for moving on and enriching this important time in your life. There are many opportunities for you to become involved. We have an excellent Student Council who take an active part in College life from designing uniform to supporting learning, from organising events to raise money for worthwhile charities.

There are also opportunities to become ambassadors for the college through our volunteering programme which requires students to work with the younger students and assist their transition to secondary school, our Peer Listeners are an integral part of the school’s success. All of these are excellent ways to enhance your CV as well as providing support to our College community.

We have a Careers team to support your onward progression whether that’s on to Higher Education, Apprenticeships at all levels or the world of work. Your university preparation could include visits to open days and taster sessions and you will be signposted towards relevant opportunities to link with universities which support eligible students to go on to Higher Education. These include; Exeter Universities Realising Opportunities Scheme,Reading Scholars and the Inspire2involve programme run by Downing College Cambridge and Villiers Trust and university Summer Schools. There are also internships available during summer placements to enhance work experience and chances to work in engineering on the prestigious Engineering Education Scheme.

Sixth Form students attend Stoke Damerel full-time so it’s really important we provide you with the right facilities. We have a dedicated Sixth Form study space, the College library for independent study and a large common room for socialising. All students have access to Chromebooks which enhance your independent study and communication.

Every student in Year 12 will gain an extra accreditation, which will greatly enhance their chances of achieving their chosen university place, or going on to their dream job. They can choose to study the Extended Project (EPQ), gain a qualification from the Prince’s Trust or complete Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

As well as these great incentives we aim to equip students with the skills required to enter adult life. Our Wider Curriculum delivers workshops on finance, first aid, well-being, cooking skills, understanding democracy and useful language skills.

At Stoke Damerel we pride ourselves in producing young adults equipped for the challenges of modern life, who are selfless and care deeply for others. We also strive to give them the best environment to achieve their highest possible grades. We look forward to welcoming you.
