MOVE Home Learning Pack Dear Parents/Carers, We are committed to ensure that your young person’s learning continues at home and that you have all the resources you need. In this folder is a collection of MOVE related activities which you could use / practise at home.

SUPERHEROES Can you practise your MOVE skills and become a superhero?

What superhero powers do you want? 

This term’s topic is superheroes! To motivate our learners perhaps watch some video clips / films of favoured Superheroes and look at the skills and movements they do, what weapons they use...



Some examples include: - The Incredibles: Elastigirl – lots of stretching and reaching - Batman: lots of martial arts movements - Captain America: throwing and aiming with his shield - Wonder woman: throwing and aiming with her lasso - Emerald Archer: A master bowman

And many more!

Superhero sitting practise…

Skill:

Activity suggestions:

Sitting: Try sitting on your bed / sofa / dining chair

Dressing up like a superhero = try putting on your own cape / mask / hat / T-Shirt / bandana / gloves (get creative!)

(Remember feet flat; bottoms back; head in the middle)

Captain America = Throwing plastic plates / Frisbee at a target or to a family member

(Note you may need to use a small step / books or something to ensure students feet are appropriately on the ground)

Wonder Woman = throwing hoops / using ropes to hook around things

Aim – students to develop their core strength by holding selves in a sitting position but also using their hands / feet to complete a task.

Green Lantern = Archery – using a bow and arrow toy to shoot (perhaps try making your own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKCQck OLOVI) Or you could make and practise throwing paper aeroplanes.

Iron Man = Building / operating items for example operate a remote control car, build towers from lego / duplo bricks / a game of jenga.

Batman = Martial arts; have a go at creating some martial arts movements!

Increase the challenge of those sitting skills and floor skills!

Move whilst sitting

- Reach to the floor to pick up an item - Turn to each side, stretch out for a favoured item - Reach up to the ceiling to get a preferred item - Rock side to side / front to back – e.g. row row row your boat etc

Transition from the bed / sofa / chair to the floor (Turn to the side, hands down on the surface and move into high kneeling, then lower to low kneeling, then choose a sitting position)

- To play games on the floor (see below) - To do the superhero activities whilst sitting on the floor

Floor sitting: - Side sitting - Long legged sitting - Cross legged sitting - Ring sitting

Transition from floor to bed / sofa: (move into low kneeling position, hands up on the surface of the bed / sofa / chair, move into high kneeling, place 1 foot up and push up bringing the other foot through, turn to perch on the surface, then both feet to push self back)

- To return to sofa / bed / chair.

Superhero Standing / Walking Practise‌ Skill:

Standing

- Superman: save the items from the kryptonite! (Have a bucket of soapy water on the table with objects in, encourage students to use one hand at a time whilst standing to get an item from the water)

(Some students may need something in front of them to hold / lean against e.g. table, rails. Try to encourage students to move ‘nose over toes’ moving their head forward first, then pushing up through their legs, rather than pulling through their (and your) arms.)

Standing from wheelchair / sofa / chair

- Sue Storm: create a storm by swirling sheets / ribbons / pompoms / water spray / water pistols - Try the sitting superhero activities but whilst standing instead!

Practise transferring weight from 1 foot to another(holding hands in front, or leaning on a table, or holding rails): - Marching on the spot - Bending and raising - Rotating and rolling the waist e.g. hoola hoop!!)
