A big welcome back from the summer holidays! I am very excited to be starting the new academic year with the students – old and new! The timetable devised is very exciting, and I look forward to supporting the students in all of their endeavours, both known favourites and encouraging the trying of new things to expand their knowledge and interests. Terms 1 and 2’s options offer the new sessions of Makaton To Music, Life Skills, Music around the World and the chance to experience stories in a sensory way. I have encouraged the students to become even more involved in shaping their own experiences, and in their first week back they chose their options, voted on the stories we will look at in literacy, choose the recipes they would like to cook and demonstrated their number skills! In literacy, the students have chosen to look at the stories of Beauty and The Beast and Frozen. With Beauty and The Beast being set in France, and Frozen in Norway, this will give the students excellent chance to learn about some different areas of Europe. With Frozen being planned in for term 2, and the approach of Christmas, there will be plenty of opportunities for even more cross-curricular activities that should capture the magic that winter can be! In numeracy the students will be working on their number skills, working with whole numbers up to 100. They will also be learning how to add, subtract and multiply small numbers in order to begin to deepen their skills with money management and looking at different ways they might need to manage their own money. This will lay a good foundation for the coming year where they will get the opportunity to run a tuck shop and put these skills into function use out in the community. In World Studies, the students will get to learn and research about what that day represents, either in the present or in history.
