Year 6 – Autumn 1 Information
Dear Parents / Carers, Welcome back after the summer holiday – we hope you and your families enjoyed the summer break. As we look forward to an exciting academic year ahead, we would like to share some information (about the upcoming half term) with you.
Curriculum: Religion: We will consider the people in our lives and reflect on the way that we care for one another, before discussing the unconditional nature of God’s love for us. We will study the Scriptures to: deepen our appreciation of God’s love, know that we are loved and can grow in love, realise the importance of forgiveness and understand that God never stops loving us. English: For the first three weeks of term, we will be studying the poetry of Alfred Noyes and in more depth, his classic, “The Highwayman”– reading, discussing and reciting the content of each stanza, analysing the poetic structure he adopts and considering the impact of his use of imagery (simile, metaphor and personification). Following that, the main text in our English sessions will be “Streetchild” by Berlie Doherty. This will be a really important text for the children to read as this will aid the development of their writing. All of the written work that they do will be based around this text. If your child would like to buy their own copy this would be welcomed too. It is a book that is always thoroughly enjoyed by the children with an important message around Catholic Social Teaching and the writing produced from it is always of a great standard. We will also be learning about a range of spelling patterns, punctuation and grammatical features (see attached information).
Maths: The beginning of Year 6 Maths will be centred on Number and Calculation – place value, rounding, estimation, approximation, mental/written addition/subtraction/multiplication/division and fractions. These topics will be approached from a problem solving perspective with a view to developing and deepening the children’s understanding and ability to reason mathematically. Please see the note in your child’s homework book regarding Maths homework.
