Year 5 - Autumn 2 Homework Congratulations Year 5! Your homework projects last half term were just incredible! We were astounded at your effort and the content was of a very high standard. We loved watching you sharing your projects with your classmates and it was a joy to see how much pride you took in your work. Here is the homework for this half term: READING – Your child should read independently EVERY night for a minimum of 15 minutes. Please also encourage them to choose a suitable question (see reading journal) to answer about their book, noting the answer in their reading journal or discussing it with them. At St John’s we use the AR reading programme to ensure your child is reading books that suitably challenge them. The class teacher will check the books suitability for your child. (Please read the notes within your child’s reading journal for further guidance.) Children should bring their reading journal in school every day. SPELLING – Each Friday there will be a spelling test using the weekly spellings below. MATHS - Online ‘My Maths’ tasks to complete over the term. Multiplication and division facts for all times tables. (Listed at back of reading/homework journal) HOMEWORK PROJECT – See below the activities that make up this half term’s homework project. Please complete 5 activities altogether. We are going to be studying WW1 and the Ancient Greeks so the activities are based around these topics. The activities can be done in any order. They need to be completed and handed in on or before Friday 7th December 2018. On this date, the children will have the chance to display and share their work with their teachers and peers. This will be a wonderful day – we are looking forward to celebrating hard work and rewarding success.
Religion Focus – Choose 1
Our topic this half term is ‘showing care and commitment’. Share how in your own family your parent or carer shows their love and care. Write a prayer of thanks include all of the key words from the topic to express your understanding i.e. fidelity, commitment, responsibility, love, service, loyalty etc E.g. Thank-you God… for the commitment my mum shows to my family because she works very hard every day to pay our bills. Christian Mission – Design the ‘ideal friend’ (are they loyal, committed and faithful? Who influences them?) and choose how you would like to present your piece of work.
WWI Topic Focus – Choose 2
Create a collage, painting or a model of the trenches or of poppy fields. Write a letter from the trenches explaining to loved ones back home what it is like to be a solider in WW1. Research or talk to your family about your ancestors. Were any in WW1? If so, can you find out some more detail about them? Or can you find any information about local soldiers? Have a look at some WW1 poetry and copy one out that you find emotive, presenting it in the most appropriate way you can.
The Greeks – Choose 2
Write a newspaper/magazine article about Alexander ‘The Great’. Create a tasty menu for our Ancient Greek day. Write a book review of the book you are currently reading. Assume the role of a professional architect and sketch a famous building from Ancient Rome.
Philosophy for Children (P4C) Watch out for the philosophical ‘Sticky Questions’ that your child will be bringing home soon…they will be sure to provoke interesting family discussions that will be continued in our P4C sessions in class!
