Autumn 1 Information Dear Parents/ Carers, Welcome back after the Summer holiday. We hope you and your family had a wonderful break. Autumn 1 is a very busy first half term and there is lots to look forward to in Year 4. The following information will give you an overview of the exciting things we have planned for the forthcoming half term.
Curriculum English Our first English topic, this half term, focuses on a book called, ‘Fox,’ written by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. We will explore the language used within the text, complete a variety of activities based on it and then write our own story. We will then move onto Newspapers. We will be looking at different articles, discussing their key features and then writing an exciting report of our own. Reading The children will be accessing the Accelerated Reading programme this half term and they will be given a reading book, to read by themselves daily during designated reading time. Children will also be given a journal to fill in independently, the teacher will not write in this journal as they will keep their own records of the children’s reading. In addition to this, your child will participate in guided reading session using a book at their level of reading. Please keep encouraging your child to read as much as possible at home.
Maths We will be learning about place value, rounding numbers, number patterns, column subtraction and column addition. They will also learn their times tables and be tested weekly as well as conducting a mental arithmetic test to improve their mental maths skills. It is important that all children continue to learn their multiplication facts (times tables) as they are key to many areas of the maths curriculum.
