Year 3 - Autumn 1 Information Dear Parents/ Carers, Welcome to Year 3 and your child’s first year in the juniors; we hope your child has a happy and successful year in Year 3! The following information will give you an overview of the things we have planned for the forthcoming half term. English
Throughout the year in English the children will be exploring different text types and completing a variety of activities based on these texts. The first book the children will be exploring is ‘The Pebble In My Pocket’ by Meredith Hooper and Chris Coady.
Reading The children will be accessing the Accelerated Reading programme this half term and they will be given a reading book, to read by themselves daily during designated reading time. Children will also be given a journal to fill in independently, the teacher will not write in this journal as they will keep their own records of the children’s reading. In addition to this your child will participate in guided reading sessions using a book/text. Please keep encouraging your child to read as much as possible at home. We recommend a minimum of 20 mins daily.
Maths We will be learning about place value, rounding numbers, number patterns, column subtraction and column addition. If the children could learn their times tables this is extremely beneficial as this knowledge feeds into all the topics in Maths. Children will be tested at times throughout the term through the use of ‘the 25 club.’ This is 25 different multiplications which the children will try to answer in an allotted time. Mental arithmetic tests will also be given to the children throughout the term to improve their mental maths skills.
Religion
Our first RE theme is the ‘Domestic Church-Family,’ with a focus on homes. We will be exploring how God is present in every home. This is expressed in the love that binds the family together within the home through good and bad times.
