What is our 7 by 7 initiative?

At our Southbroom, we believe that education reaches far beyond the walls of the classroom. Our "7 by 7" initiative ensures that every child takes part in seven enriching experiences before they leave us at age 7. These carefully planned opportunities are woven into our curriculum to broaden horizons, spark interests, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.

From discovering the wonders of the natural world to engaging in cultural and community events, each experience helps shape confident, curious, and well-rounded individuals. We are proud to offer all our pupils these memorable and meaningful moments— building a foundation of skills and memories that will stay with them for life.

Our 7 by 7 experiences have been carefully chosen for our children to take part in before they leave our school. These experiences are thoughtfully selected to reflect the unique context, environment, and opportunities available to our children We recognise that every child deserves a rich and varied education, and we ensure that these opportunities provide a strong foundation for their future learning and life beyond school. Our aim is to give every child the best possible start.

Performed on a stage

Taking part in a performance allows children to develop self-confidence, resilience, and communication skills. Whether acting in a Nativity or dancing in a festival, children learn to express themselves, collaborate with others, and overcome nerves These experiences foster creativity and pride, helping children feel seen and valued, and preparing them for future situations where they may need to present or perform.

Been on a trip to the beach

A visit to the beach offers a unique sensory and environmental experience that many children may not otherwise access. It encourages exploration, play, and curiosity about the natural world From feeling sand between their toes to observing tides and marine life, children gain a deeper appreciation of geography and ecology, while also enjoying the freedom and joy of outdoor learning.

Enjoyed watching a performance

Watching live performances introduces children to the arts in an engaging and memorable way. It supports emotional development by allowing them to connect with stories, characters, and themes. These experiences also help build cultural capital, sparking imagination and offering inspiration that can feed into their own creativity and learning

Visited our local countryside

Regular welly walks through the local countryside help children build a connection with nature and their immediate environment These walks promote physical health, observation skills, and mindfulness. They also encourage curiosity about seasons, wildlife, and habitats, enriching science learning and fostering a lifelong respect for the natural world.

Represented the school in our community

When children represent their school in the community, they develop a sense of pride, responsibility, and belonging. Whether through local walks or a sporting event, these experiences help children understand their role in society and build positive relationships with others. They also learn about teamwork, behaviour expectations, and how to be ambassadors for their school

Visited a museum

Museum visits bring learning to life by allowing children to engage with real artefacts and historical contexts. During the Toys topic, for example, children explore how play has changed over time, deepening their understanding of history and culture Museums spark curiosity and critical thinking, encouraging children to ask questions and make connections beyond the classroom.

Explored the big wide world

Trips like Longleat offer children a chance to experience the wider world beyond their immediate surroundings They encounter animals, cultures, and environments that broaden their understanding and inspire awe. These experiences help children develop global awareness, empathy, and ambition, showing them that the world is full of possibilities waiting to be explored.
