Our Curriculum Drivers Literacy and language

Community and diversity

We want our children to thrive in the world and we believe good communication is key to them achieving this. Therefore they will be taught a curriculum with a rich depth of vocabulary that allows pupils to express themselves articulately across the curriculum and develop strong communication skills. We also want them to have the subject knowledge and oracy skills to be able to articulate their thoughts, ideas and opinions clearly.

As the demographic at Northbrook Primary Academy is predominantly white British, we are keen for our children to have a good awareness of their own heritage and British values, while also developing a greater awareness of cultural diversity throughout our curriculum. Through exploiting cultural links in our English texts and celebrating a variety of cultures in foundation subjects we hope to enable pupils to gain a better understanding of what is required to live harmoniously in an ever changing and increasingly diverse world. We want them to understand the multicultural nature of our country and the different religions and world views that thrive in our community.

HEART Values

Global citizenship

Our curriculum seeks to build a sense of identity and belonging in our children and the four broad philosophies of what education is for: personal empowerment; cultural transmission; preparation for citizenship; and preparation for work are embodied in our HEART values. Our HEART values are incorporated into everything we do at Northbrook Primary and we aim to ensure that our curriculum (both the explicitly taught and the experienced) is the very best that it can be but also reflects the nurturing environment in which we strive to deliver it. A global citizen is someone who is aware of and understands the wider world – and their place in it. We are ambitious for our children to become a citizen of the world and take an active role in their community by working with others to make our planet more peaceful, sustainable and fair. We also want them to understand the ever changing issues around the environment and to take steps in school and at home to combat these.
