Mathematical Thinking for GCSE This programme is for teachers or departments keen to address the reasoning and problem-solving challenges of the mathematics curriculum and its assessment at GCSE. Work groups will explore professional development activities focusing on practical and accessible classroom-based approaches.

Challenging Topics for GCSE Within the ‘old’ GCSE there were a number of topics that consistently proved challenging for many teachers and their pupils for a variety of reasons, either that the content itself was perceived to have an inherently high level of challenge or that it was less difficult material but somehow proved difficult to teach in a way that made sense to pupils, resulting, at best, in an instrumental understanding.

With the new GCSE the list of challenging topics has actually changed little from previous years, and an evidence-based list of challenging topics arising in the new GCSE was drawn up with awarding bodies.

Nationally, Work Groups are set up to explore effective ways of teaching some of these topics, both to address the immediate needs of the incoming KS4 pupils, but also taking a longer term view by considering development in KS3.

GCSE Resits There are now a large and growing number of Post-16 GCSE Resit students, predominantly in FE colleges.

GCSE Mathematics is still unfamiliar to many teachers in FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges and with a timeframe for resit delivery over 8 months rather than two (or more) years, centres are faced with a number of substantial difficulties.

Century Tech Meeting 20th November 2019 A Century Tech meeting will take place 8.30am until 10.30am on Wednesday 20th November at St Peter’s Catholic High School.

This event will provide an introduction/overview of the programme, a learning walk, meeting with teachers and an implementation plan/impact over four weeks.

9.30am - 10.30am - Meet St. Peter's Catholic High School staff and students in the IT suite with a chosen content live - An open session for Headteachers to explore in a "live setting" how CENTURY feels to use.

Pearson's free international writing competition is encouraging 4-16 year-olds (taking in Key Stage 5 up to 19 years of age) to tear up the rule book and give their own 21st Century take on classic fairy tales, fables and regional folk stories.

This free competition empowers children and young people to put themselves at the heart of their own stories as they assert their modern-day stamp on classic tales and create their own stories to reflect their personal interests, background and experiences.

As well as accepting entries into the national competition, Pearson will also be separately judging and providing prizes (1 per key stage) for the Archdiocese of Liverpool Schools across Primary and Secondary.

Thrive - SHINE BID We have two schools who have registered interest, but are seeking four schools for this bid.

If your school is interested, please complete this very short form http://w.pfrms.co/h65i4 by Monday 18th November. We will then be in touch to confirm if you have been selected.

Klare Rufo, Primary Trust Coordinator, has been working with a company called Thrive to put in a large bid to the SHINE Trust – we are asking for £98,000 and in the final application stages. The bid was returned last month and the only feedback is that we need to name the schools who will be participating. We are looking for 4 secondary schools and 12 primary schools. We will choose the primary schools based on the nominated secondary schools.

If successful there will be no costs for the school to pay for licences amounting up to a significant amount for larger schools.

What is the THRIVE Approach? What does it take to develop healthy, happy, confident children who are ready and open to learning? Recent advances in neuroscience, attachment theory and child development have provided some of the answers to this question. The Thrive Approach draws on insights from these fields to provide a powerful way of working with children and young people that supports optimal social and emotional development. In addition, the Approach can equip you to work in a targeted way with children and young people who may have struggled with difficult life events to help them re-engage with life and learning.

What’s Involved? Through online tools, training and mentoring, we support you in learning about the emotional and social development relevant to a child’s age. We also help you to understand a child’s challenging or troubling behaviour as communication. Every child will get an individual plan. You will be given suggestions for activities and strategies to support you to implement the plan. You can review the child’s progress at regular intervals and assess and monitor their progress.

What does the three year support package look like?
