Is Health & Social Care for you?

This course is designed for students who wish to study Level 3 Health & Social Care but do not yet meet the necessary entry requirements for AS/A2 or the Extended Diploma at this stage. This course provides you with the opportunity to start Level 3 studies in Health & Social Care, in a supportive atmosphere.

You will have the opportunity to progress on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care. With the Foundation Year in Level 3 studies, you can complete the course over 3 years rather than 2, allowing more time to complete work.

You want to gain a Level 3 qualification (equivalent to an AS qualification.)

You are interested in a career in the Health or Social care professions and wish to develop the personal and professional skills you will need for this.

You are able to study Level 2 Maths/English alongside this course, if you have not already gained these qualifications.

You are committed to care values such as equal opportunities.

You want to gain real work experience and speak to Health and Social Care practitioners. There will be an opportunity to complete a block work experience placement during this course.

What will I learn?

Developing effective communication You will find out about important aspects of communication and put your own skills into practice.

Health, Safety & Security You will learn how to identify potential hazards, relevant legislation and also how to deal with situations which may arise.

Development through the life stages

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed entirely through coursework – there are no exams.

What activities can I get involved in?

You will investigate how humans develop and change during their lives.

You will also have the opportunity to gain work experience. This will help you put your learning into practice and perhaps decide upon your future career.

Preparing for Personal & Professional development You will assess your own strengths and weaknesses and plan to enhance your progression through career action plans and developing your learning styles.

The course focuses on the vocational aspects of Health & Social Care so you will find a lot of teaching is based on work experience or case studies and role plays.

You will complete a block work experience placement as part of this course.

The course will include group work and individual learning. You will examine case studies and take part in practical class exercises.

We have an extensive range of books available in the library which provide as a great source of information for the course. The BTEC textbook follows the specification closely, so you can easily see what you have covered and quickly find the information you need. ICT resources are available in all teaching rooms.

The course is supported by the Learning Support team and learning mentors and teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy.

Where does it lead?

These courses are vocational and will cover the necessary knowledge and skills for those who want to pursue a career in Health and Social Care.

The Foundation Year in Level 3 studies will take place over 1 year and leads to a BTEC Certificate in Health & Social Care. This is equivalent to an AS qualification.

Depending on the grade you achieve, you may be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or possibly an A level programme. You may also use this qualification to gain employment within the Health and Social Care sector. Many positions are available for those with Level 3 qualifications.
