1:1 Pupil iPads at Hawthorns School

1:1 iPad Project at Hawthorns School Hawthorns School has embarked on an exciting 1-1 iPad project. This means that all our pupils are provided with their own iPad to assist and enhance their learning and journey at Hawthorns.

Technology will help pupils to overcome barriers to their learning and facilitate our children’s specific needs.

We will work towards paperless systems that improves the offer for our learners, further develops communication with families and enables staff to be more efficient with their time.

We will ensure all young people, their families and stakeholders are fully involved in our journey.

FAQ's Q: Can children take iPad's home?

A: No, the iPad needs to be in school everyday, charged.

Q: Can they keep them when they leave?

A: No but if they move on to New Bridge School all their work will be transferred to their network Q: Do we have access to them?

A:Similarly to the class workbooks, you can have a look at your child’s work on their iPad at a time convenient with class staff. They will be available at parent evenings and reviews Q:Will they be on it all day?

A: No, each class will use it in different ways with their children but it will be used for learning as appropriate. Staff will not have them out all the time, unless it is used to assist communication Q: My child can become frustrated when I take the iPad off them, what will you do about that?

A: We have systems in place for any children who have difficulties coming off the iPad. There will be individualised strips, symbols, rewards or plans to support any child who needs this, either while on the iPad or when it has finished.

Q: Will I have to pay for the iPad? A: No, they are provided by Hawthorns, although they are allocated to your child and will remain with them for their time at Hawthorns, they are school property.

Q: What will happen if my child breaks their iPad? A:We will try and replace any iPads that become damaged as quickly as possible to ensure minimum disruption to your child’s learning. Where this may take longer we will have spare iPads on site as a temporary resolution.

Q: What will it be used for?

A:Some children have a communication app on theirs, this enables them to communicate with staff or peers using symbols or voice. Children’s work will be recorded on their iPad - photos of their learning, activities and social interactions may be recorded as a record. There are apps that allow book making and writing to be recorded on the iPad which supports our children who have difficulties with fine motor skills and handwriting.

The iPad will be used to enhance our children’s learning in all areas of the curriculum where applicable. All iPads will be set up with Apple Classroom, which enables staff to control the pupil’s iPads form theirs. Staff can observe what is happening on the pupil’s iPad live and can lock them into apps.

We also regularly use Guided Access which enables an iPad to be locked onto a specific app or specific buttons and controls. This means the pupil has to use the iPad for the teacher’s intended use.

While all pupils have been implemented with their iPad, the initiative is a gradual process and staff training and introduction of apps and processes will take time.
