Personal Belongings:

Please can we remind parents that children are not to bring personal belongings into school Any items brought in will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day.

Grand Raffle:

Tonight your child should have brought home an envelope containing 4 books of raffle tickets. We would really appreciate it if you could sell them to family and friends and return the stubs and cash to school This will be a great fund-raiser for school so we hope you can support us. The raffle will be drawn at our Spring Fair on Saturday 27th April. If you would like any additional books of tickets to sell, please get in touch.

Class Dojo:

Staff well-being and work-load is a priority for us in school as it is important to have a team of happy, healthy staff! One of the things that has been mentioned recently is parents messaging teachers/staff on Class Dojo late in the evening and expecting a response or excessive messaging

Arrival at Sch

Just a reminder that p at school before 8:50a attending Breakfast Cl before 8:45am will be Club and parents will b session

I have asked staff not to respond to emails or messages after 6pm as they need time in the evening for themselves. If you want to report an absence, book Breakfast Club or After-School Club or have an admin question, please contact the office Teachers do not always have time to read Dojo messages during the day when they are teaching and this can lead to a communication break-down.

Accelerated Reader:

Some pupils in Year 2 and all of Key Stage 2 are now on the accelerated reader programme. You may find that the book they bring home seems easier than the ones they have previously been reading. This is because the programme is also targeting their retrieval and inference skills or they may not have performed to the best of their ability on the initial test.

We are due to redo the test again in 2 weeks so we should see a measure of progress. The best way to accelerate progress is for your child to read as many books as they can and complete the online quizzes.

Extended Learning:

If you wish, your child can have an additional higher level reading book alongside the accelerated reader book.

Mothering Sunday Service:

Can the pupils who are taking part in the service at St. Oswald’s on Sunday please arrive at church at 10:20am They do not need to wear school uniform.

Easter Activities:

Easter Hamper Raffle – please send in money in a named envelope to purchase your squares - £1 a square. Alternatively, Sara Gardner will be selling squares in the playground at the end of the day on Tuesday and Friday, weather permitting.

So many books, how do I choose? A Love to Read Resource

Becoming more confident at choosing books you will enjoy is an important skill that takes time to master and needs to be practiced! We suggest these six strategies next time you choose your next book.

1. Think

What type of book are you in the mood for? Something to make you laugh, something which is familiar or completely new, a book which is exciting, or something to help you learn new things? Books offer us all types of amazing experiences. Before choosing a book, think about what type of experience you are looking for!

3. Support:

There will be lots of others in your class and school who enjoy reading the same things as you do – support each other by recomending books to each other – you can share preferences by telling about them or writing short reviews/recommendations to display in your class or school.

5. Look:

Look at how books are displayed in your class reading spaces or school library Learn how books have been organised so you can choose more easily based on genre (e.g., funny, exciting) or topic (e.g., sports, animals). Help your teacher to organise these displays to support reading choices, look out for written reviews from others, and consider displaying your own reviews too!

2. Choose:

There are many different strategies you can use to choose a book. For example, you can look at the front cover, the illustrations, read the blurb on the back, read the first few pages or random pages within the book. You can choose based on genre, author or book series, or choose based on a recommendation by someone or a review You may try several of these strategies at once Try using different strategies and see what works best for you

4. Ask:

Your teacher and other school staff will have had lots of experience of choosing books. Ask them what strategies they use, or if they’d recommend any books for you.

If you are struggling to find a book you like, ask them for help

6. Swap:

Even with good choosing strategies, sometimes a book is just not right, and that’s ok Becoming an independent and more confident reader is about knowing when a book is not right for you. So give it a go, don’t give up too soon, but if you are just not enjoying it, choose something else – there’s a better book out there for you!
