Maths:
In Maths this half term, we will be developing our place value knowledge looking at numbers up to 100 and deepening our understanding of tens and ones. We will then move on to learning about money. We will learn to recognise coins and notes, and will find totals of coins, applying our skills of counting in 2, 5 and 10.
We will also be learning about time, using the language before, after, first, next, then and last, as well as morning, afternoon and evening. We will then move on to look at a clock and telling the time to o’clock and half past times. We will explore the passing of time and how long it takes to complete tasks.
History:
In History this half term, we will be learning all about pirates! Our key question being 'Should we call Grace O'Malley a pirate? The children will become researchers to discover who Grace O'Malley is, key events of her life and why she is an important figure in history.
English:
This half term we will be enjoying the book “The Pirates Next Door". We will explore writing our very own letters in a bottle before moving on to writing our own pirate adventure story. This half term children will pull together all of the skills they have learnt during their time in Year 1 and try to apply these independently.
Year 1 - Summer 2:
Ahoy There!’
Science:
This half term our topic will be 'Everyday Materials and their properties'. The children will learn to identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock before moving on to discussing their simple physical properties and uses. We will carry out simple investigations using different materials.


PE:
In PE this half term we will continue to have two sessions a week, one with our class teacher and one with our PE coach. We are continuing our learning on invasion games and striking and fielding.
We will also be preparing for our sports day events and developing the skills needed to complete the activities on this day.
Computing:
Our Computing lessons this half-term will be based in the classroom. We will be learning all about Beebots and will make videos teaching others how to use them too!
RE:
In RE this half-term, our big questions will be 'what does it mean to belong to a faith community?' We will explore traditions from a range of faiths, including Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
Art & Design and Design Technology:
This half term the focus will be Art and Design. The children will explore colour mixing, learning about primary and secondary colours, and about how we can make different shades of colour without adding black or white. Children will look at art work by the artists Jasper Johns and Clarice Cliff and recreate their own work in their styles.
PSHE
Music:
As Musicians, the children will be continuing their learning, all about percussion instruments. We will be looking at performing with keyboards, glockenspiels and our voices to study pitch, dynamics and timbre.

In PSHE we will be learning about keeping ourselves safe. We will learn the words safe and unsafe and consider what is safe to eat and drink and to play with. We will learn to identify potential dangers in different settings and how they can affect others, such as younger siblings.
Geography:
This area of the curriculum is taught in Spring 1, Spring 2 and Summer 1.
