English: This half term we will be reading stories from 1001 Arabian Nights including Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. In our writing we will focus on Writing to Entertain by composing first person narrative, character and setting descriptions. In grammar and sentence work we will practise using subordinate clauses, writing dialogue and work on including a wide range of sentence structures within our written work.


Year 6 Summer 1: 'The Golden Age?'
Science: In Science, we will be looking at Living Things and their habitats. We will describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics, based on similarities and differences, including micro- organisms, plants and animals and give reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics.
Reading: We will continue to work on our retrieval skills, understanding vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support our inferences. We will read a wide range of texts with different themes.
History: Throughout this half term, we will be learning about The Ancient city of Baghdad. Children will be taught about a non-European society that provides contrasts with British history and we have chosen: Early Islamic civilization, including a study of Baghdad c. AD 900;
PSHE: We will learn about our 'Working World'. We will take a look at why people want to save money, ways in which the children can help-out at home, budgeting and ways to make money.
Design and Technology: Textiles
Children will design a waistcoat to tie in with the theme of our performance 'Pirates of The Curry Bean'. They will then mark the outline of the waistcoat on fabric before cutting and pinning the panels. They will then sew them together using a simple running stitch . After assembling their waistcoat, they will then decorate it with a motif.


Year 6 Summer 1:
‘The Golden Age?’
RE: In RE we will be exploring the word 'eternity'. In this unit we will consider what different religions believe about life after death.
Music: The children will learn all about texture, duration and timbre whilst learning the following: drum beats, guitar riffs, bass lines 2, vocal hooks and also dynamic changes and structure. They will be preparing for Year 7 music and something called...'The School of Rock!
Spanish: El fin de semana / The weekend:
Computing: Throughout this term, the children will be learning about the history of computers. They will have the opportunity to create a multi-media presentation all about the topic. They will also learn about being safe online.
PE: In PE we will be continuing to develop our skills in Outdoor Adventurous Activities and build upon our skills in striking and fielding activities.
• Learn how to say what they do at the weekend in Spanish (free time activities).
• Learn to integrate conjunctions into their work.
Maths:
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages:
This half term we are going to be looking at what a percentage is and how to find a percentage of a given amount. We will also be exploring the equivalence between fractions, decimals and percentages. Children will use this knowledge to order fractions, decimals and percentages.
Algebra
As the term progresses, we will start to look at algebra where numbers and quantities called variables are represented by letters and symbols in expressions and equations.
Area and volume
Towards the end of the half term, we will revise finding the area and perimeter of shapes and extend this knowledge into finding the area and perimeter of compound shapes. Children will also learn about how to calculate the volume of a shape.
English: We will begin the term with a debate about deforestation where the children will consider various viewpoints around the topic. They will then use this to write a balanced argument for the question ‘Is Deforestation necessary?’. Following this, children will write a persuasive letter about the need to protect endangered species. In grammar and sentence work, we will look at the subjunctive form which the children will use in their formal writing. We will recap the wide range of punctuation used by Year 6 and the meaning of a range of grammatical terms.


Year 6 Spring 2: ‘Mother Earth'
RE: In RE we will continue to explore the theme of racism and prejudice and what can be done to reduce this in 2024.
Science: In Science, we will be studying the topic of 'Animals Including Humans'. Firstly, we will explore the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will then discuss the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way our bodies function.
Reading: The children will continue to work on their retrieval skills, their understanding of vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support their ideas. They will read a wide range of texts and extracts including poetry and non-fiction texts across a variety of themes. We will also mark World Book Day.
In this collection of lessons children will design and build playground apparatus featuring a variety of different structures, giving consideration to how the structures will be used. Drawing upon new and prior knowledge of structures, they will use a range of materials to reinforce, add decoration and identify what makes a successful structure.
Geography – Energy
Year 6 Spring 2: ‘Mother Earth’ DT– Structure: Playgrounds
Our Geography topic for this half term is energy, focusing heavily on renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We will explore the benefits and challenges these different energy sources bring and the impact they are having on Earth.
PSHE: We will begin the half term with a focus on Online Safety, looking closely at online relationships. Towards the end of the half term will be 'Relationship, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) week, where the children will recap what they know about puberty and build on this understanding.
Computing: This unit explores computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the World Wide Web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration.
Spanish: Comer sano / Healthy lifestyles:
• Name and recognise 10 foods and drinks considered good for your health.
• Name and recognise 10 foods and drinks not considered good for your health.
• Say what activities they do to keep in shape during the week


Music: This half term's music lessons will all involve singing. The children will be introduced to the songs for our end of year performance and for our visit to Church at Easter.
PE: In PE we will develop skills in outdoor and adventurous activities and invasion games.
Ratio and Proportion
Children will spend time looking at the language linked to ratio and proportion. They will look at scale factors linked to scale drawings. The children will then look at how this topic links to recipes.
English: We will begin the term by revisiting the features of a non-chronological report and the children will write all about 'Planet Pandora' and their own hexapod. In grammar and sentence work, we will recap the wide range of punctuation used by Year 6 and the meaning of a range of grammatical terms. To end the term, we will then explore narratives and the children will have the opportunity to write a short extract.
Algebra
Children will then focus on algebra, starting with how this links to function machines before looking at formulas and solving equations.

Year 6 Spring 1: ‘Mother Earth'
Science: In Science, we will be studying the topic of Evolution and Inheritance. Firstly, we will learn how inherited characteristics are passed on from parents to offspring. Then we will move on to examine the differences between habitat and environment and how plants can adapt to their surroundings. Finally, we will learn about Charles Darwin and evolution.


Reading: The children will continue to work on their retrieval skills, their understanding of vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support their ideas. They will read a wide range of texts and extracts including poetry and news articles across a variety of themes. We will also mark National Story Telling Week.
Art – Art and Design Skills
In this collection of lessons children will explore a selection of paintings of various artists. They will collect ideas in sketchbooks and plan a final piece of artwork in the style of an artist that interests them.
Geography – Natural Disasters
We begin the topic by distinguishing the difference between natural disasters and human disasters. Children will then learn to locate the 'Ring of Fire' and research events that have occurred there. Linked to this, we will also explore earthquakes and tsunamis and the human impact of these disasters.

PSHE: We will begin the topic by exploring 'Being responsible' with a particular focus on stealing. We will discuss the differences between borrowing and stealing and how it feels to be a victim of theft.
Year 6 Spring 1: ‘Mother Earth’
Spanish: En la escuela / At school:

Computing: This unit explores programming using Python. The children will explore how to use nested loops and explain what they do. Throughout the unit, pupils will iterate ideas, testing and changing and explain what their program does. Children will also recognise that computers can choose random numbers; decompose the program into an algorithm and modify a program to personalise it.
• Name the subjects we study in school in Spanish with the correct definite article/determiner.
• Extend sentences by giving an opinion on the various school subjects and extend even further by giving a justification for that subject.
• Start to tell the time by learning how to say time by the hour.

Music: This half term's music lessons will all be based around 'Chinese New Year' and the children will use guitars and keyboards to create their own music.

RE: In RE we will be exploring the theme of Grace. We will explore the importance of this in different religions and how we can show this quality in everyday life.
English: Our writing for the half term will link closely to our weekly history lessons. We will begin by writing a newspaper article reporting the announcement of WWII. We will create our own evacuee poetry, write biographies of Anne Frank and will end the half term with a recount. In grammar and sentence work we will recap how to use apostrophes for possession and contraction and the meaning of grammatical terms. We will also introduce the children to active and passive voice.
Year 6 Autumn 2: ‘World War II’
Science: In Science, we will be studying the topic of materials. we will learn the differences between solids, liquids and gasses and exploring what happens when different solids mix with liquids. We will also investigate the effects of oxygen on different solids and explore reversible and irreversible changes.


Reading: The children will continue to work on their retrieval skills, their understanding of vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support their ideas. They will read a wide range of texts and extracts across different themes including in celebration of World Earth Day and to mark Anti-Bullying Week.
DT – This half term our topic is 'Three ingredients – Three courses'. The children will research their own recipe and then in groups each prepare a different course to make the whole three course meal.
PSHE: Our topic for the half term is 'Keeping Safe and Healthy'. Our focus for the first part of the half term will be on 'Water Safety'. We will look at different warning signs and what they mean, create water safety posters and spot dangers. Our next topic is 'Alcohol and Drugs' where the children will explore facts around legality.
Computing: This half term's topic is Bletchley Park. The children will learn about codes and how they can be used to decode messages. This will then move on to looking at how we can ensure passwords are safe and how to achieve this. The topic will end by examining the importance of Bletchley Park to the War effort.
History: This half term we will be learning about World War Two. We will begin by learning how repercussions of World War One led to the start of World War Two. We will explore how the war impacted on people at home by examining evacuation, rationing, and the Blitz. We will also learn about what life was like for Jewish people in Nazi Germany.


Year 6 Autumn 2: ‘World War II’
Spanish: La ropa / The clothes:
• Recognize and recall from memory 21 items of clothing.
• Explore the regular ‘ar’ whole verb present tense conjugation of the verb LLEVAR to describe what you and possibly somebody else is wearing.
• Revisit the use of the possessive adjective ‘my’ in Spanish and describe clothes in terms of colour.
Music: Children will learn Christmas songs - 12 Days of Christmas/ Carol of the Bells/ Jingle Bells and will study melody, pitch, rhythm and keyboard skills. They will also use tuned percussion instruments.
PE: In PE we will develop skills in invasion games and athletics.

English: This half term we will be reading 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. Our writing will be based on the text and will conclude with the children composing their own animal adventure story. In grammar and sentence work we will begin by ensuring children can create well-structured sentences. We will move on to using conjunctions correctly in sentences, the use of adverbials and understanding grammatical terms.


Year 6 Autumn 1: ‘The Great War’
Science: In Science, we will be studying the topic of electricity including learning about electrical components, how to make simple circuits, the history of electricity and we will carry out a scientific investigation into the brightness of bulbs.
Reading: The children will work on their retrieval skills, understanding vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support inferences. They will read a wide range of texts and extracts across different themes.
Art and Design: Make my voice heard Children will create their own graffiti tag, explore the work of Kathe Kollwitz and Pablo Picasso and create their own clay sculpture based off their own drawings.
History: This half term we will be learning about The Great War. We will examine the events that led to the outbreak of war, the use of propaganda and what life was like in the trenches for soldiers. The unit ends by learning about how the war came to an end and the Treaty of Versailles.


PSHE: Our topic for this half term is 'Feelings and Emotions' with a focus on 'Worry'. We will explore what emotions are, identify how we can reduce our feeling of worry, learn how to support others, and recognise that our actions affect others.
Year 6 Autumn 1: ‘The Great War’
Computing: This half term our focus is online safety. We will spend time thinking about the impact and consequences of sharing online and explore strategies that will help to keep us protected online.
Spanish: Presenting Myself (recap unit):
• Count up to 100 in Spanish.
• Ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live in Spanish.
• Say how we are feeling, how old we are, what our name is and where we live in Spanish.
• Revisit rules of adjectival agreement when saying our nationality in Spanish.
Music: The children will learn all about complex rhythms using Djembe drumming. They will also be rehearsing for the Harvest Festival Celebration at St Cuthbert's Church.
PE: In PE we will develop skills in invasion games and athletics. We will also swim for 5 weeks during this half term.
