Year 4 curriculum map

Maths: This half term we will learn about: Length and Perimeter - Equivalent lengths (km and m) - Perimeters of rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons Fractions - Mixed numbers (compare and order) - Improper fractions (convert to mixed numbers - Adding and subtracting fractions We will continue to revise previous times tables through our TT Rockstars sessions.

Geography: We will be learning about South America, identifying the physical geography and features of Brazil. We will recognise and describe the cultural attractions there, trade links and fair trade, as well as comparing Brazil with a region in the UK.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 2: ‘Going, Going, Gone!’

English: We will have a focus on our new text Wonka.

Alongside reading this book we will be focusing on perfect present tense, determiners as well as recapping over our previous grammar foci. The children will have the opportunity to write for a range of different audiences & for different purposes. We are incredibly excited to see the children's creativity!

Science: Living Things and Their Habitats We will continue to study animals in their habitats. We will focus on both man-made and natural changes to their environments and how this can pose dangers to living things.

We will also be looking at different endangered animals.

PE: We will be focusing on a variety of invasion games. Looking at the different skills such as throwing and catching and how to move correctly. We will be taking part in a variety of games and thinking about how to play fairly.

Music: Wider opportunities (instrument focus). Birch will continue to focus on clarinets with Mrs McCardle. Willow and Pine will continue to focus on drums and guitars with Mr Pritchard. Maple will continue to focus on brass with Mrs Hughes.

RE: We will be focusing on Easter in both a religious and sociological perspective.

We will be recapping the children's previous knowledge and building upon this.

Computing: We will be continuing to develop the children's knowledge of scratch (our coding program) as well as learning all about HTML. How to find this and replacing images.

Art & Design and Design Technology: Art and Design: This area of the curriculum will be covered in Spring 2.

Design Technology – Fastenings. The children will be creating a felt book cover during this half term. They will learn about a variety of fastenings, design their cover then create using measuring, sewing and gluing techniques.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 2: ‘Going, Going, Gone!’

PSHE: Relationships: We will be identifying the different types of relationships we can have and describe how these can change as we grow. We will also identify how relationships can be healthy or unhealthy and explain how our families can support us.

Spanish: Las verduras / The vegetables: • Name, recognise and recall from memory up to 10 vegetables in Spanish.

• Attempt to spell some of these nouns with their plural article/determiner.

• Learn and use the high frequency verb "quisiera" from the verb “querer” in Spanish.

Maths: This half term we will learn about…

Multiplication and Division - Multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 - Formal written methods for multiplying and dividing 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers Length and Perimeter - Equivalent lengths (km and m) - Perimeters of rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons We will continue to revise previous times tables through our TT Rockstars sessions.

English: Our quality text will be ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. We will be using our theme to create Haiku poems and writing a persuasive text around the issues of deforestation. We will continue to look at the grammatical features used for writing in Year 4 such as relative clauses and subordinate clauses.

Geography: We will be learning about the world’s climate zones and biomes and comparing regions of North and South America. We will then focus on the issues of deforestation.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 1: ‘Going, Going, Gone’ History: This area of the curriculum has been covered in Autumn 1 and 2 and will be covered in Summer 1.

Science: Life Processes We will identify the seven life processes and group and classify living things according to their features. We will be taking part in an invertebrate hunt and studying the local habitat and environmental changes.

PE: In PE we will be developing our skills in dance and outdoor adventurous activities. We will also be starting swimming later this half term.

Music: Wider opportunities (instrument focus) Pine will be learning how to play the djembe drums and guitar with Mr Pritchard.

Maple & Birch will be learning to play the trumpet and clarinet with the music teachers from Sefton.

RE: How do family life and festivals show what matters to Jewish people?

We will learn about how Jewish people show their beliefs through worship in festivals, both at home and in wider communities.

Computing: Coding with Scratch We will be using variables in coding through the program Scratch and understanding how Scratch works by using decomposition to identify key features.

Art & Design and Design Technology: Craft and Design: Fabric of Nature.

Using the flora and fauna of tropical rainforests as a starting point, we will develop drawings through experimentation and textile-based techniques to design a repeating pattern suitable for fabric.

Design Technology – This area of the curriculum will be covered in Spring 2.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 1: ‘Going, Going, Gone’ PSHE: Being Responsible We will be looking at rules and guidelines children may have to follow when thinking about home time.

Spanish: Las verduras / The vegetables:

We will begin to name, recognise and spell up to 10 vegetables in Spanish. We will also continue to recap and use all of the vocabulary learnt so far.

English: Our quality text will be ‘The Egyptian Cinderella’. We will be writing our own version of a traditional tale with an Egyptian twist. We will continue to build on our knowledge of expanded noun phrases, similes and fronted adverbials and also develop our understanding of inverted commas. We will be reading a variety of traditional tales to support our writing and will focus on our RE topic about inspirational figures.

Geography: This area of the curriculum is covered in Spring 1 & 2.

We will use maps to locate Egypt linked to our theme about Ancient Egypt.

Multiplication and Division - Multiples of 3, 6, 9, 7, 11, 12 - Multiplying and dividing by 1 and 0 - Factor pairs - Formal written methods of multiplication and division We will continue to revise previous times tables through our TT Rockstars sessions.

History: We will study the Ancient Egyptians and how artefacts and discoveries have led to developing our understanding of this period in history. We will learn about life in Ancient Egypt, mummification and the worship of gods and goddesses.

Year 4 Autumn Half-term 2: ‘Pictures in Time’

Science: Sound We will identify how sounds are made and understand that vibrations travel through a medium to the ear. We will be investigating patterns between volumes of sounds and the vibrations that produced it. We will also consider how sound can change with distance from the source.

PE: Pine – Athletics with Miss Rimmer Birch & Maple – Invasion Games with Miss Hesketh

Art & Design and Design Technology: Structures: Pavilions We will be investigating and modelling framed structures to improve their stability then apply this research to design and create a stable, decorated pavilion.

Year 4 Half-term 2: ‘Pictures in Time’

PSHE: Keeping Safe and Healthy - Cycle safety - Healthy Living - Anti-bullying Week

Spanish: La fecha / The date: We will recall, from memory, the seven days of the week, the twelve months of the year and numbers 1-31 in Spanish. We will also ask and answer what the date is in Spanish.

English: Our quality text will be ‘Stone Age Boy’. We will also be focussing on writing to entertain where we will be writing setting and character descriptions. We will build on our knowledge of grammatical features such as expanded noun phrases, similes and fronted adverbials to add interest and description in our writing. Our reading focus will be linked to our topic about the Stone Age and our Science topic on teeth and digestion.

Geography: This area of the curriculum is covered in Spring 1 & 2.

We will use maps to locate Britain and Europe linked to our theme about the Stone Age.

Maths: This half term we will learn about…

Place Value - Place value of numbers up to 10, 000 - Numbers on a number line - Rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000

History: We will study the early civilization periods from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and how artefacts and discoveries have led to developing our understanding of these periods in history. We will develop our chronological understanding using timelines to identify the different periods of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Addition and Subtraction - Add and subtract ones, tens, hundreds and thousands

Year 4 Autumn Half-term 1: ‘Pictures in Time’

Science: Teeth and Digestion First, we will be learning about the different types of teeth and their functions. We will then describe the basic parts of the digestive system in humans and how they work to break down and digest food. Finally, we will be constructing and interpreting a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey.

PE: Birch & Maple – Athletics with Miss Rimmer Pine – Invasion Games with Miss Hesketh

Music: Wider opportunities (instrument focus) Birch will be learning how to play the djembe drums and guitar with Mr Pritchard.

Computing: Collaborative Learning We will be using a variety of online documents to share comments and ideas whilst understanding the need to be thoughtful when working on a collaborative document.

Art & Design and Design Technology: Painting and Mixed Media We will be studying prehistoric art through cave paintings and using charcoal to create tones and textures in our drawings. We will then experiment with natural materials to make paint and apply our painting skills to re-create a prehistoric picture.

Design Technology – This area of the curriculum will be covered in Autumn 2.

Year 4 Half-term 1: ‘Pictures in Time’

PSHE: Feelings and Emotions We will be exploring feelings of jealousy, anger and worry and will develop our skills to manage our emotions positively and understand how and where to seek help if needed.

Spanish: I’m Learning Spanish We will be learning about the culture of Spain including food, traditions and what Spain is well known for. We will be learning how to greet people in Spanish and say goodbye and also review colours and numbers 1 to 20.
