English: We will be focusing on a mixture of different non-fiction texts and from this we will be writing instructions and creating explanation texts linking them to our Science knowledge of plants. Using high quality texts, we will be looking at how different non-fiction texts are structured and then look closely at features and new vocabulary. We will be teaching the children the difference between present and past tenses, the use of commas in a list, subordination and coordination and also the difference in statements, questions and commands. We will end the term by looking at performance poetry using appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear.

Maths: This half term we will be continuing our work on ‘Money’ and ‘Multiplication and Division’. We will be focusing on the 2s, 5s and 10s. The children will make connection between repeated addition and multiplication. We will also be focusing on ‘Length and Height’. The children will be using non-standard units such as cubes and then begin to look at measuring using a ruler. The children will be learning about ‘cm’/ centimetres.

Year 2 – Spring Art & Design: Craft and design: Map it out. This unit focuses on teaching children to explore and create maps through various art forms including drawing, felt making, printmaking and designing stained glass.

Science: We will be learning all about plants. This will include keeping a growth chart of how plants grow from bulbs and seeds. Our learning will focus on the life processes of plants and during our visit to Botanic Gardens we will look at different types of plants and trees.
