Year 1 Curriculum Overviews

Maths:

In Maths this half term, we will start learning all about multiplication and division! We will be using concrete resources and pictures to help us as we tackle this brand new topic!

We will then begin to explore the concept of Fractions. The children will learn about halves and quarters of different shapes and objects. We will then continue our Place Value learning, by exploring the number range between 0100. We will practise finding one more and one less of numbers, represent numbers using objects and pictures and also counting forwards and backwards from a range of starting points!

Through our Number Ninja passports, we will continue refining our arithmetic skills and focus on our number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 in our passport tests.

English:

This half term we will be enjoying the book ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Jack and the Beanstalk is a traditional tale about a boy and his Mother, and how 5 magic beans changed their life forever! The children will be writing to inform this half term and will focus on writing instructions, before writing their own section of the story.

Geography:

As Geographers, we will be learning about compass directions (North, South, East, West) and will use these to navigate the school grounds during our school fieldwork!

Year 1 - Summer 1:

‘Shhh! Don’t Wake the Giant’

Science:

In Science this half term, our topic will be Plants! We will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees! We will identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, while we observe the growth of plants in class, and make observations about how plants change over time.

PE:

In PE this half term we will continue to have two sessions a week, one with our class teacher and one with our PE coach. We are continuing our learning of the fundamental movement skills and will look at:

• Skipping

• Sidestepping

• Rolling

• Throwing

• Catching

• Striking

• Kicking

Music:

As Musicians, the children will be continuing their learning, all about percussion instruments! They will also be exploring the different noises that animals make and try their best to replicate them during their music lessons with Mr Pritchard!

Art & Design and Design Technology:

This half term, the children will be focusing on Design Technology! They will be learning about moving pictures and creating their very own Jack and the Beanstalk story books, with moving pictures! The children will explore different ways to incorporate moving parts into picture books by looking at a wide range of texts, before designing and making their own to share with their buddy classes.

Computing: Our Computing lessons this half-term will be based in the classroom. The children will learn all about algorithms and how to programme and problem solve using BeeBots!

History: This area of the curriculum is taught in Autumn 1, Autumn 2 and Spring 2 and Summer 2.

RE:

In RE this half-term, our key question will be ‘What does it mean to belong?'. We will begin by looking at groups that we belong to, before discussing how people belong to different religions and what this means to them.

PSHE

The focus for this half term will be focussing on our emotions, particularly exploring the emotion 'Jealousy'. We will work to understand jealousy and why we get jealous, before moving on to appreciate how everyone has different strengths and that that is a good thing!

English:

In English, this half term, our quality text will be Emma Jane's Aeroplane by Katie Howarth. We will explore Non-Fiction writing, completing leaflets about the places Emma Jane visits and also write diary entries about Emma's travels. We will develop our Speaking and Listening skills in preparation for our class assembly.

Maths:

In Maths this half term we will be revisiting place value, continuing to use concrete resources and number lines to develop our understanding of numbers to 50. We will apply our skills to read, write, order, and compare numbers within this range. We will begin to explore measure, beginning with length and height. We will measure with a range of nonstandard units, before introducing centimetres.

Science:

In Science this half term, we will continue to look at Animals including Humans. We will explore how we classify different animals, using vocabulary such as Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores. We will understand the differences and similarities between these classifications and begin to sort animals in different ways.

Year 1 – Spring 2: ‘Around the World in 30 Days’

Art & Design and Design Technology:

In Art this half term, our topic is called Paper Play and we are exploring the Sculpture element of Art and Design. We will use our hands to manipulate a range of modelling materials and explore how to join and fix materials in place.

PE:

In PE, we will be focussing on Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, and fundamental movement skills. We will be developing our skills of balance, speed, agility, and body control through a range of activities.

Geography:

In Geography this half term, we will be learning about the continents of the world, naming, and locating each on the globe, and a world map. We will also be learning about the oceans of the world, and where these are located. We will share all that we have learnt during our special class assemblies.

Music:

In Music this half term, we will be looking at Music from around the world and learning songs to perform during our class assembly.

PSHE

In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow –building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on Positive Relationships, exploring how to build friendships and understand bullying.

History: In History this half term, we will be exploring the question 'Why was flying so important?'. We start by exploring The Wright Brothers before moving on to learning about the timeline of flight development and other influential people who feature upon it.

Computing:

This half term, Year 1 will continue to build on the work started on Internet safety day. We will focus on emotions and the importance of behaving online as we would in school.

RE:

This half term we will be exploring 'What Makes Places

Sacred'. We will identify special objects and symbols found in a place where people worship and be able to say something about what they mean and how they are used.

English:

In English, this half term, our quality texts will be 'Giraffe's Can't Dance' and 'Meerkat Mail'. Our initial focus will be on descriptive writing, the children will develop the skills to describe both characters and settings in the Giraffes Can't Dance story. We will then continue to apply this learning to letter writing, using the Meerkat Mail story as inspiration.

Maths:

In Maths this half term we will continue to build on our knowledge of place value. We will recite numbers forward and and backwards within the 0100 number range, starting and finishing at different points. We will focus specifically on understanding numbers to 20, teaching the vocabulary tens and ones. We will then apply our knowledge to add and subtract within this range.

Year 1 – Spring 1: ‘On Safari’

Science:

In Science this half term, we will be looking at Animals including Humans. We will explore how we classify different animals, using vocabulary such as Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores. We will understand the differences and similarities between these classifications and begin to sort animals in different ways.

Art & Design and Design Technology:

In DT this half term, we will be creating our very own animal puppets! Using felt and different fastening skills, we will design and make our own puppets before evaluating the process and comparing our puppets with a friend.

PE:

In PE, we will be focussing on gymnastics or fundamental movement skills. We will be developing our skills of balance, speed, agility, and body control through a range of activities. During gymnastics sessions we will develop our skills on the floor before transferring them to equipment.

Geography:

In Geography this half term, we will be developing our understanding and knowledge of the United Kingdom. We will explore the 4 countries that make up the UK and learn a little more about each one, including its location on a map and its capital city. We will then compare our local area to the African Savanna, discussing similarities and differences.

History:

This area of the curriculum is taught in the Autumn term and Spring 2.

Music:

PSHE

In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow –building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on Practise Makes Perfect, developing our Growth mindset and instilling the belief that we should always try our best and never give up!

In Music this half term, we will be learning about Chinese New Year. We will focus on using keyboards and learning initial notes before, learning different songs to help us learn more about this important celebration.

Computing:

This half term, the children will be using digital imagery to tell stories. We will take photos on an iPad and use these photographs to tell stories.

RE:

This half term our topic is all about belief. We will be exploring three different religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) and discussing what these groups believe. We will then look at comparing these religions and understanding what similarities and differences they possess.

English:

In English, this half term, our quality text will be The Gingerbread Man! We will start the topic with an exciting visit to the local bakery and will then learn how to write a recount of our visit. By the end of the term, we will build up to writing our own version of the Gingerbread Man!

Maths:

In Maths this half term, we are developing our addition and subtraction skills. We will begin to learn our number bonds for all numbers up to 10, and also introduce the use of a part-whole model. We will also begin to recognise and name 2D & 3D shapes. To help us consolidate our key mathematical skills, we will also begin our regular Number Ninja sessions, with a focus on fluency.

Science:

In Science this half term, we will continue our learning about Seasonal Change. As Autumn turns into Winter we will spot changes around us and discuss how these different seasons affect our lives. We will also look at different types of trees and learn the difference between Deciduous and Evergreen trees.

Year 1 – Autumn 2: ‘Run, Run as fast as you can’

Art & Design and Design Technology:

In Art this half term, we will be experimenting with different media as developing our observational drawing skills through the unit – Make your Mark! We will be learning about the famous artist, Kandinsky, who is known for his art using shape.

PE:

In PE, we will continuing developing our Fundamental Movement Skills such as running, jumping, hopping and skipping. We will spend our sessions on the field with both our WLSP coach (Thursday) and our class teacher (Friday).

History:

In History this half term, we will be comparing life in 1666 to our lives now through learning about the key events of the Great Fire of London. We will look at Samuel Pepys diary and learn about London’s recovery. We will also make Tudor houses and think about how the fire may have spread.

PSHE

In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow –building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on keeping safe and healthy, focussing on washing our hands, brushing our teeth and eating well, which we will explore with a visit from Active Sefton!

Geography:

This area of the curriculum is taught in Spring 1 and Summer 1.

Music:

In Music this half term, we will be learning about The 'Nutcracker Suite’ we will be completing a study of pitch, tempo and rhythm. We will also learn some fun Christmas songs ready for our assembly in Church.

Computing:

This half term, the children will be developing their knowledge of algorithms through a range of unplugged activities.

RE:

This half term our key question is: How and Why do we celebrate special and sacred times? We will explore the Jewish festival of Hannukah and the Christian festival of Christmas and discuss why these celebrations are important to their faiths.

English:

In English, this half term, we will read a range of quality texts, all about being ourselves! We will be writing descriptive sentences about us and the things we like to do. In our writing, we will be focusing on the use of capital letters, full stops and finger spaces which are a key focus throughout Year 1.

Maths:

In Maths this half term, we will be focussing on place value and deepening our understanding of numbers. We will consolidate, and build on concepts introduced in Reception, including counting, ordering numbers, comparing numbers, and numbers as words. We will also be focussing on number formation, ensuring all digits are correctly formed and facing the right direction.

Year 1 – Autumn 1:

‘This is Me!’

Science:

Our Science unit this half term we are learning all about the human body. We will begin by naming different body parts and their functions before exploring our five senses and how we use them.

Art & Design and Design Technology:

In DT this half term, our focus is Healthy Foods. We will identify a range of fruit and vegetables and use these to make a healthy smoothie.

PE:

In PE, we will be developing our Fundamental Movement Skills such as running, jumping, hopping and skipping. We will spend our sessions on the field with both our WLSP coach (Monday) and our class teacher (Friday).

History:

In History this half term, we will be continuing to explore our 'This is Me' topic by looking at our own history and changes within living memory. We will begin to understand chronological order and how to sequence events.

Geography:

This area of the curriculum is taught in Autumn 2, Spring 1 and Summer 1.

Music:

PSHE

In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow –building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on how we change over time.

In Music this half term, we will be using tuned and untuned percussion to play 'The Carnival of the Animals'. In October, we will be visiting church for our Harvest festival assembly where we sing lots of songs.

Computing:

This half term, we will discuss the importance of staying safe online and begin to explore our school computer suite for the first time!

RE:

This half term our key question is:

1.8 How should we care for others in the world and why does it matter?

We will think about what is special about our world as well as how we can care for it. We will also discuss how we are all unique individuals who must care for each other.
