Autumn 2 Curriculum Overview Reception 24/25

Page 1

Personal, Social & Emotional Development:

The children will be working on all the social and emotional skills required for school: sitting still, listening, sharing and turn taking. Our quality text, Elmer, will help us develop our empathy for others and aid conflict resolution in friendships.

Physical Development

:

A lot of time will be devoted to developing the children’s gross, and most importantly, fine motor skills to aid with writing. We encourage children to make use of playdough and funky fingers activities via the classroom environment in order to develop accurate control of their hands and fingers to hold and use a pencil accurately.

Communication & Language

:

Children will be encouraged to speak to groups and larger audiences, while considering the needs of the listener. We will use opportunities like show and tell, or family celebrations, for the children to discuss.

Maths:

Linking with our Elmer story, we will further our understanding of patterns and begin to identify a range of 2D shapes. Children will learn to recognise, count, compare and represent numbers, using the language of ‘more than, fewer than and equal to’. We will also deepen our knowledge of numbers to 10 and begin verbally counting to 20.

Reception Autumn 2: Me and My World!

Literacy:

The children will continue with daily phonics, learning RWI set 1 sounds and beginning to use their knowledge to segment the sounds in simple words and begin to blend them together to say a word. They will start to bring reading books home, but only when they are able to blend some simple words confidently.

Understanding the World:

We will continue exploring the world around us and link changes in the environment to the seasons. Through, for example, visits to the Botanic Gardens to witness seasonal change as we transition from Autumn to Winter.

Expressive Arts:

We will include different role play experiences as part of the classroom environment to spark children’s imaginative play. We will be expanding on colour mixing through printing. The children will also be practicing a number of festive songs in order to give a performance of the Nativity story at church!

RE:

Through books and stories including the Nativity, we will explore the meaning of Christmas.
