Nursery Curriculum

Autumn – All About Me &Let’sCelebrate Spring – Once Upon aTime &ComeOutside Summer – Growing & People Who Help Us

PSED

In the Early Years, Personal Social and Emotional development is broken down into 3 areas:

• Self regulation

• Managing self

• Building relationships

We put a strong focus on this area of our curriculum throughout the whole year. It is importantfor children to learn to be part of the nursery and the larger school community before any further learning can take place.

Personal, Social & Emotional

Development: Totalk about the different feelings and emotions as the childrenbeginto settle into Nursery. To support the children grow in confidence to leave their carers and enjoytheir nursery experiences.

Understanding the World: The childrenwill bake on a regular basis, including bread linked to The Little RedHen. We will explore the ingredients and how they change.

Maths: Learning how we can matchshapes and objects usingcolour, size and shape. The children will sing simple mathsongs and games to practise their counting.

Physical Development: Spending time outdoorsusing the balance bikes and scootersto develop gross motor skills through moving and playing outdoors. Develop fine motorskillswith earlymark making and Practice throwing and catchingusing beanbags and soft balls.

Communication & Language: Children to spendtime insmallerkey worker groups to developtheir confidence to talk with adultsand friends. Encouragingthem to talk about their familiesas well as listen to stories and talkabout them.

Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Adults will model and support childrenas theyexplore these areas.Childrenwill be encouragedto joinin with a range of actionsand rhyme songs and variouscraft activities.

Literacy: We will enjoysharing multiple books daily, with a focus on specific books includingThe Colour Monster, The Invisible string and The Little RedHen. The children will be introduced tothe different partsof a book and how we hold and use them. We will use listening gamesto develop the children’slistening skillsand using theirown voices to replicate sounds.

We use Read Write Inc Phonics,to supportwith the developmentof readingand writingatChurchtown.

Children will have a dailyPhonics lesson, beginning with early listening skills, with a member of staff. As the children’s skills developwe move on to identifying initialsounds in words and some children may be ready tobegin ourRWI scheme before leaving nursery.

READING

One of ourkey priorities is developing READING. We strongly believe reading underpins our children’s successes across the curriculum.

Children in nursery are read tomultiple times each day, where we encourage predictions, recall ofkey facts as wellas howthe story canmake the children feel. We modelhow toreadandlook after the books andencourage childrento freely access books in allareas of ourclassroom. We alsoprovide additional resources which the children can use toactoutandenhance their story telling.

Please readto your childas often as you can! This is a fantastic way of spending time with your childas well as developing alove of reading.
