Nursery Curriculum Overview

Personal, Social & Emotional Development: To play with one or more other children, extending and elaborating play ideas. To support children to find solutions to conflicts and rivalries.

Physical Development: To spend time outdoors using the balance bikes and scooters.

PE with large equipment to develop core strength and shoulder stability to promote good fine motor control as well as regular sessions of Dough Disco and Squiggle whilst you wiggle. Use one handed tools and equipment, for example, making snips in paper with scissors and hole punchers.

Maths: To learn how we can count and represents numbers 6-8 and explore mass and capacity through adult led and exploratory activities and play. To develop the children’s understanding of how we can make a number as well as learn how to write them.

Literacy: To enjoy sharing multiple books daily, and to explore quality texts including Handa’s Surprise and the Gruffalo’s child To develop the children’s phonological awareness, so that they can spot and suggest rhymes, count or clap syllables in words and begin to recognise words with the same initial sound as well as identify words which are segmented.

Nursery Spring 2: Come outside Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups and developing a wider range of vocabulary.

Encouraging them to listen to longer stories and begin to show an understanding of what has happened and talk about the story.

Understanding the world:Begin to make sense of their own life story and family history. Children to share their family traditions and routines. To look for signs of the changing seasons and create maps related to text such as Handa’s Surprise and our local community.

Expressive Arts: To join different materials and explore different textures.

Using role play to create and recreate narratives from their own lives and stories.

To learn and practice the songs for the Easter church service.

RE: To understand why we celebrate pancake day and Ash Wednesday. To participate in the school Easter service in church.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development: To develop their sense of responsibility and membership of the Early Years school community.

Children will learn the names of staff in our building and the main school, like the head, deputy head and assistant head teachers. To understand the importance of healthy food and drink choices, activity and toothbrushing.

Maths: To learn how we can count and represents numbers 3-5 as well as subitising. We will sing simple number songs to practise counting 1-5 both forwards and backwards as well as encourage children to attempt to write the numeral.

Physical Development: To spend time outdoors using the balance bikes and scooters.

PE lessons with WLSP will be leading on Dance sessions twice a week to help develop gross motor control.

Literacy: To enjoy sharing multiple books daily, focusing on traditional fairy tales such as The Gingerbread Man. In preparation for the children's visit to The Atkinson, we will be learning about the works of Julia Donaldson, in particular The Gruffalo's child. To develop the children’s phonological awareness, so that they can spot and suggest rhymes, count or clap syllables in words and begin to recognise words with the same initial sound. Children will continue to practise writing their own names.

Understanding the world: To explore and talk about the different forces they feel and explore winter.

Children will learn about their home address and local landmarks in Churchtown.

Nursery Spring 1: Once upon a time Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups and developing a wider range of vocabulary.

Encouraging them to listen to longer stories and begin to show an understanding of what has happened and talk about the story.

Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Children will have access to a variety of junk and craft resources to create models using their own ideas.

RE: To learn about the festivals of Chinese New Year and the beginning of Lent.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development: To continue to support and develop their ability to identify their feelings and emotions. Supporting the children to grow in their independence when choosing an activity and grow in confidence around the classroom and with others.

Physical Development: Spending time outdoors using the balance bikes and scooters to develop gross motor skills through moving and playing outdoors.

Practice throwing and catching using beanbags and soft balls. West Lancashire Coaches take PE twice a week.

Literacy: We will enjoy sharing multiple books daily, including The Rainbow Fish and Dear Zoo. We will be developing the children’s knowledge of the different parts of a book, identifying rhymes and clapping syllables in their own and others names. Children will begin to practise writing their own names.

Maths: Learning how we can count and represents numbers 1 and 2 as well as subitising. The children will also explore simple AB patterns and try to continue these patterns using physical objects and sounds. We will sing simple number songs to practise counting 1-5.

Nursery Autumn 2: Let’s celebrate Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups and developing a wider range of vocabulary.

Encouraging them to listen to longer stories and begin to show an understanding of what has happened and talk about the story.

Understanding the world: We will explore the history of bonfire night and Remembrance day as well as sharing our ow family traditions. Children will bake on a regular basis and explore how mixtures and ingredients change after baking.

Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Children will be encouraged to join in with a range of actions and rhyme songs in preparation for the Christmas show.

RE: Learn about the festivals of Diwali and Christmas, the storied behind them and how they are celebrated.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development: To talk about the different feelings and emotions as the children begin to settle in to Nursery. To support the children grow in confidence to leave their carers and enjoy their nursery experiences.

Maths: Learning how we can match shapes and objects using colour, size and shape. The children will sing simple math songs to practise their counting.

Physical Development: Spending time outdoors using the balance bikes and scooters to develop gross motor skills through moving and playing outdoors.

Practice throwing and catching using beanbags and soft balls. West Lancashire Coaches take PE twice a week.

Literacy: We will enjoy sharing multiple books daily, including The Colour Monster and The Little Red Hen. The children will be introduced to the different parts of a book and how we hold and use them. We will use listening games to develop the children’s listening skills and using their own voices to replicate sounds.

Nursery Autumn 1: All about me Communication & Language: Children to spend time in smaller key worker groups to develop their confidence to talk with adults and friends.

Encouraging them to talk about their families as well as listen to stories and talk about them.

Understanding the world: The children will bake on a regular basis, including bread linked to The Little Red Hen. We will explore the ingredients and how they change.

Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Adults will model and support children as they explore these areas. Children will be encouraged to join in with a range of actions and rhyme songs and various craft activities.

RE: The children will explore the importance of friendship and kindness.
