Year 5 Curriculum
Autumn 1-Malamander
Autumn 2 – The Victorians
Spring 1- Ancient Greeks
Spring 2 – Where Once We stood
Summer 1- Greek legacy
Summer 2 – The Highwayman

We use quality texts to create interest through many of our subjects.
Maths:
To start Year 5, the children will be exploring numbers up to 1,000,000. Children will learn to read, write, compare, order and partition these much larger numbers! We will then recap the written methods for addition and subtraction and apply our skills to a larger number range, before delving into the realms of multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers before October halfterm.
Science:

Year 5 – Autumn 1
Malamander

This half-term, our topic is ‘Forces’. The children will learn about the concept of gravity and how it acts a force between the Earth and falling objects. After that, the children will identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. We will also be learning about key scientists, such as Isaac Newton and how he developed the theory of gravity.
Art:
In this collection of lessons, the children will learn and develop their skills in design, drawing, craft painting and art appreciation. They will be designing their own invention, expanding on an observational drawing and using a poem to create a portrait! They will paint an enlarged section of a drawn collage and learn to ‘think’ like an artist.
English:
We will be using the quality text 'Malamander' by Thomas Taylor to write a range of genres this half term. We will be identifying the features of exemplar texts and then applying this when writing a range of texts including character descriptions, setting descriptions and poetry. Our grammar lessons will focus on features that need to be included in each piece of writing and a wider range of punctuation will also be taught. Spelling and handwriting will also be a key focus.
PE: In P.E this half term, the children will be having lessons in gymnastics or swimming.
RE:
In RE we will be exploring the question 'Why do some people believe God exists?.' We will define the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and outline a Christian, Muslim and Jewish understanding of what God is like. We will present different views on why people believe in God or not.
Music:
During this half term, our focus element of music is ‘pitch’. The unit of work is called ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ and is based on the song by Bon Jovi. We will be singing the song, playing the keyboards, composing, improvising and exploring music from the 1980s.
Geography: In Geography, we will be using the 8 points of a compass and using 4 and 6-figure grid references. The children will be using symbols and keys on a map to build their knowledge of the U.K.

Year 5 – Autumn 1
Malamander
Spanish:
This half term's Spanish unit is Presenting Myself / Me presento. We will recall numbers 1-31 in Spanish. We will also ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live. In addition, we will learn how to say how we are feeling when asked. We will also express our nationalities in Spanish, understanding gender agreement rules.
Computing:
During this half term, our topic is Online Safety. We will understand how apps can access our personal information and how to alter the permissions. We will learn to be aware of the positive and negative aspects of online communication and understand how online information can be used to form judgements. We will discover ways to overcome bullying and understand how technology can affect health and wellbeing.
PSHE:
PSHE: During this half term in PSHE, the children will be learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. They will also be exploring feelings and emotions.
Our first mathematics unit will look at the following objectives…

READING AND HOMEWORK

One of our key priorities is developing READING. We strongly believe reading underpins our children's successes across the curriculum.
The requirement of all children is to read at least three times per week at home. This can either be to an adult or they can read independently.
Each child will be issued with a reading record for parents to record their child’s reading each week. This will be checked in school.
In Year 5, children are permitted to write a comment the diary themselves, however we ask that parents still initial/sign to acknowledge the comment
Homework is set weekly on a Friday to be returned by Wednesday the following week.
READING AND HOMEWORK

In their reading journals, the children have the login information for ‘Times Table Rockstars’ (TTRS) & ‘Spelling Frame’
These are two programmes that school have subscribed to, for children to access with their learning both within and outside the classroom.
In addition to the weekly homework/reading, we encourage the children to access these apps (as well as others) as frequently as possible.

SEND (SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES)
If you have any concerns about your child’s progress or well-being, the first point of call will always be to talk to the class teacher.
From this point, it may be that further provision is required, which the class teacher will organise and implement.
After this period of time, if there are still concerns, the SEND team (Mrs Tudor and Mrs Sutton) are always there to support and offer guidance for the children.
