How can I support my child with mock preparation?
Give them a quiet study space
Support them in creating a routine which allows them to focus on their school work and revision for short, regular periods of time
Remove technology and distractions
Perhaps offer rewards where appropriate for having and sticking to good study habits
Talk to your child about their revision and test them on what they are revising. You don’t have to know the answers – their class notes or, ideally, they should be able to tell you the answers!
Why is revision so important?

If pupils do not review their learning outside of the classroom environment, it is incredibly likely that they will forget it or will struggle to commit it to their long term memory.
Best practice shows that regular reviews of information mean that it gets committed to long term memory and the information can be retained.
What should my child be doing to be successful in their revision?
1. Your child should create a revision timetable that has short, regular revision sessions built into it. A revision timetable should have 20 minute revision slots for each topic or subject. Anything longer can become ineffective.
2. Your child should make sure that regular, short breaks are taken.
3. Your child should break down the information that is being revised through spider diagrams, note taking, cue cards or flashcards. Reading through their class notes or a revision guide is not as effective as you think – they need to be doing something with this information to commit it to their memory.
4. Your child should test themselves on what they have just revised to see whether they can remember. You could do this together.
5. Your child should practice through past exam questions or papers
6. Speaking to their class teachers or House Tutors if they have any questions or concerns – we are all here to help and we want your child to be successful!
