PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT Why is it important to learning and how can you help?

FOUNDATION STAGE PROFILE Two elements of Physical development Moving and Handling Gross motor; Kicking, throwing, catching, patting, rolling, climbing, balancing, hopping, skipping with and without a rope, bat and ball skills, climbing up and down stairs, Fine Motor; Cutting, drawing, writing, tracing, rolling, stirring, mixing, knife and fork skills

Health and Self care Toilet training, dressing and undressing, taking shoes on and off, putting coats on, using a knife and fork to eat, choosing food, understanding of keeping safe with tools, around classroom, dining hall

EARLY LEARNING GOALS By the time the children are 5 they will be expected to; Moving and Handling Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movement. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing .

Health and Self Care Children know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. They manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT? Moving and handling Gross motor skills are the precursor to fine motor skills. Children need good gross motor skills to have good reading and writing skills.

Children who are good at sport have higher self esteem and are more able to interact with their peers.

Health and Self Care Children who can take care of themselves and understand how to keep themselves healthy grow into independent and healthy adults.

An independent child is an independent learner.

WHEN SHOULD WE START? Early childhood is the optimal time to teach and learn these basic skills.

Young children are keen to explore how their body moves and given the opportunities will develop the skills they need without feeling like they can not do it.

Continuous Provision everyday Children practise; Outdoors; gross motor such as digging, sweeping, ribbon skills, large writing, moving in different ways, throwing and catching, rolling and aiming.

Indoors; mark making, preparing snacks and pouring drinks, malleable activities with the play dough, using different tools safely and with precision in the creative and workshop areas.

DOUGH GYM AND FUNKY FINGERS Dough Disco Timed sessions to music Using dough to create different movements to music.

Children stand whilst they are doing it.

Dough gym: For children who need to work on their Shoulder pivot/ Palm grip Elbow pivot/Palm grip Wrist pivot/moving to pincer grip

Funky Fingers Activities are for those children who are developing their hand knuckle and finger pivots and grips

DOUGH GYM SESSIONS Warm up hands (developing awareness of fingers and hands) Jazz hands, Shark hands, Tommy Thumb

Exercises (depending on children’s need) Round the world, Milk the cow, Lasso, Swim Pinching, rolling, lifting and squeezing

Cool down Pat the dough Shake out hands and wriggle fingers Each session takes about 5 minutes in total

DOUGH GYM ACTIVITIES Different doughs are used each week to entice children to come to the malleable area. The colours, textures and smells can also be changed. This develops language skills alongside their physical development too.

Rolling; balls, peas, snakes, Squeezing; hands, fingers Pinching; fingers, tongs, tweezers Rolling; cars, rolling pins, hands Cutting; scissors or knives, shape cutters, pizza cutters Poking; straws, pencils, matchsticks, lolly sticks Tracing; fingers, lolly sticks, matches Decorating; candles, raisins, beads, jewels

FUNKY FINGERS SESSION Warm up fingers Tommy thumb, massaging fingers, popping bubbles

Timed exercises 1/2 minutes Pegging onto washing line, pegs into boards, Lacing onto strings, threading onto straws, tracing, handwriting, nuts and bolts

Cool down Wiggle fingers, stretch them out.

Each session takes about 5 minutes in total

FUNKY FINGER ACTIVITIES Each week the activity is different and then left for the children to explore during the week independently.

Hand strength; Plant sprayers, tearing and scrunching paper, Finger isolation; Bubble popping, finger puppets, keyboard skills, telephone numbers, till checkouts, finger painting Eye hand coordination; Lacing, threading, tracing, buzz wires Releases; Connect four, putting lids on and off pens, marble run, building towers Pincer Grips; Pegs, tongs, tweezers, elastic bands, peg boards Pencil control; Colouring in, drawing around shapes, stencils, drawing horizontal and vertical lines of different length, follow wavy, zigzag lines Handwriting; Trace then copy letters in name, trace words, copy letters in families, have a go independent writing

BUSY BODIES AT HOME While you are outside in the garden, park, field, wood, beach....

Play tig, football, throw and catch, swing ball, bowl, aim, run, jump, hop skip, balance, roll down hills, climb trees, walk along walls, balance on tree trunks, stepping stones across rivers When you are at home......

Walk up and downstairs, balance on different parts of your body, let them demonstrate their jumps and crawls, dance, do star jumps, play clapping games

FUNKY FINGERS AT HOME While you are outside....

Dig, sweep, fill buckets, water the plants, wash the car, twirl a ribbon, roll a ball or hoop, skip with a rope, carry objects While you are inside....

Make play dough, make and decorate cakes and biscuits, encourage independent dressing, zips, buttons, coats, shoes and wellies, use a knife and fork, let them chop the vegetables and salad, play shops, sing finger rhymes, play connect four, scrabble, hama or aqua beads, make a scrunched up tissue paper collage
