KS3 MUSIC The Music Curriculum at BRGS is designed to give each pupil a wellbalanced and enriching foundation in the knowledge and skills required to flourish as listeners, performers and composers. Expectations of pupils are high, and the level of challenge in all tasks is designed to prepare students at each key stage for further study (should they wish to pursue it) or, at least, a continued appreciation of music from a wide variety of styles and cultures. At KS3, we offer a varied programme of study, ranging from traditional Indian music and Western pop, to the Broadway musical and European classical music. Students learn about the key features and related theory of each style through an integrated approach combining performing, listening and composing tasks. Practical tasks are often designed with a student-led approach in mind, offering students flexibility and choice in terms of instrumental focus and, where appropriate, repertoire. This encourages independence and self-managed learning as well as making the curriculum as engaging as possible. Alongside the traditional Music curriculum, all Yr 7 students follow an ‘Introduction to Music Technology’ course, and the use of a variety of Music Technology platforms permeates the rest of the KS3 curriculum. Music is a subject which encompasses a wide variety of transferrable skills and our curriculum at every level aims to challenge students to reach their creative and technical potential whilst broadening their experience of the world’s culture and encouraging them to develop an appreciation for the importance of Music and the arts within our society as a whole. Overview In year 7 students receive 3 music lessons per fortnight (one with a music technology focus and two practical/music theory lessons). The curriculum in year 7 covers: The basics of traditional and non-traditional musical notations. An introduction to performance skills using voices, keyboards and ukuleles. An introduction to listening and appraising skills using correct musical terminology. The basics of music technology including sequencing, use of samples and basic editing techniques using industry standard software include Cubase.
