KS3 Drama Drama is a discrete subject at BRGS in tune with the rising importance for pupils to be furnished with strong communication skills, compassionate understanding and some creative ability. In Year 7, all pupils have approximately one drama lesson a week where we aim to endow pupils with a range of communication, teamwork and performance skills. “The most valuable asset a nation has is the creativity of its children. Alan Plater (playwright) The fundamental aim of our KS3 drama curriculum is to develop all pupils individually in a unique learning process that ultimately enables them to function or thrive in a public space. Oracy skills, vital in the 21st century yet largely under-taught, underpin this process where pupils, develop real skills for life that include a wide range of personal and social skills whilst also specifically honing vocal, physical and spatial ski lls to achieve desired effects for an audience. Drama brings knowledge to life and allows pupils a high degree of ownership over their learning as they make decisions, manage information and solve problems. It draws upon their own experience of the world and then extends it, engaging emotions, intellect, imagination and invention. This is all taught collaboratively through creative projects that explore various scenarios, topical issues, texts and improvisatio n to promote enquiry, mutual respect and a sense of responsibility whilst also encouraging pupils to think critically, creatively and constructively. Progression is evident in the way pupils create, perform and evaluate with increasing levels of depth, independence, complexity and control. Drama gives pupils a forum to make informed c hoices that cultivates compassionate understanding preparing them for responsible decisionmaking in both life and work. At the core of our KS3 drama curriculum is communication and collaboration, and by instilling confidence and a positive self-image, our pupils gain a rare balance of both holistic and academic skills.
