Dear Candidate, I am delighted that you are interested in becoming the Headteacher of Devonshire Primary Academy, part of the Blackpool Multi Academy Trust.

Our Trust currently has three primary schools and a special school. However, it is set for an exciting period of change; a merger is planned in November with a likeminded Trust, taking us to three large primary schools, two all-through special schools, a specialist post-19 College provision and a Teaching School. This new Trust will support 475 staff and in excess of 2,000 students.

We are ambitious with our plans; in the next five years, we aim to further grow the Trust by partnering with concurring schools and, should the right opportunity present itself, open a Free School. The new Headteacher at Devonshire Primary Academy will play a key role in our plans, ensuring that the Trust becomes an employer of choice and the proposition is something that prospective new partners will be keen to join.

More detail about the role is contained in the Job Description later in this brochure but a common theme is that the Headteacher will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, fellow Headteachers, Local Governing Body and the Trust Finance and Operations Officers to ensure we provide an outstanding education for our pupil cohorts across Devonshire Primary Academy and the wider Trust.

This Leadership role is not for the faint hearted! The school serves a diverse and complex community and in May 2015 the full Ofsted inspection findings were that the school ‘Requires Improvement’. Since then, the school has moved forward on a positive trajectory and the whole team is totally committed to improving this grading. The successful candidate will need to be resilient, striving to improve the school whilst seeking the best possible outcomes for the 500 pupils on roll. The role is complex and demanding but, for the right candidate, the rewards are huge and the Trust Board and Local Governing Body are dedicated to supporting the new post holder in achieving success.

Overview of the Trust and School

The Headteacher will be an integral part of our Trust Headteacher Board, responsible for Devonshire Primary Academy’s performance, but also contributing to the progress of the wider Trust. Our ambitions are high, aiming for all the current schools within the Trust to be ‘outstanding’. Expectation is for merger with another Trust by 1st November 2019, with a time for this new partnership to embed before focussing on Trust growth.

The Trustees and Governors are looking for an outstanding leader who will continue to move the Academy forwards and have the highest ambitions for our children. The applicant will be a skilled communicator who can engage with all sections of our community, will have a clear vision for our pupils and will engage with our aspiration to provide an inclusive education wherever possible. The ability to take a strategic overview, plan creatively and successfully, within financial constraints to maximise learning opportunities, will be at the heart of what you do.

In September 2013, together with Anchorsholme Primary and Park Community School (Special), Devonshire converted to Academy status and formed the Blackpool MultiAcademy Trust. Revoe Learning Academy came to the Trust shortly after this, as a sponsored school, and we are delighted that it is now a ‘Good’ school. The schools all benefit from a unique relationship that has developed between the schools and the MAT is proud of its Sponsor Status.

Following the appointment of a new CEO from Sept 2019, the Trust is set to merge with The View Trust, to be renamed The Sea View Trust. This exciting period will see the Trust grow to 3 Primary Schools, 2 Special schools, a specialist post 19 provision and a Teaching School, with the aspiration to secure a bid for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Free School.

Each school within the Trust has a dedicated Business Manager to support with, and lead on, the day-to-day business requirements. Post Trust merger, the vision is that a Central Team of Trust employees will work across all the schools, supporting with performance, compliance, financial efficiencies, development and further Trust growth.

Devonshire’s History Devonshire Primary Academy has an interesting history! The school is situated at the heart of an area of economic and social deprivation in a densely populated part of Blackpool. In August 2003 the previous Junior school building was destroyed by fire and for three years, some 400 pupils were transported on a daily basis (by double-decker buses!) to accommodation in another, socially deprived, area of Blackpool.

In September, 2005, Devonshire Primary School was established by amalgamating the Infant and Junior schools and, a year later, moved into a new, state-of-the-art, innovative building based on the unique 'beehive school' concept. It was designed to accommodate and support the school's commitment to inclusion and participation and to establish an exemplar school with many sustainable strategies.

Its north south orientation provides optimum environmental performance, the roof of the main hall is fully accessible as a landscaped technology 'deck' and a large allotment area has been developed. The learning spaces provide a comfortable environment with fantastic acoustic properties and there is a 'sound field' system in every classroom. The school is flexible and adaptable; it is also secure and inclusive. The stratified nature of the building elevates the majority of the children and provides 'natural' security, whilst at the same time the Academy is fully inclusive and accessible. The vertical zoning also allows the shared and community facilities (at ground floor) to be used out of hours. All stakeholders were involved in the consultation process for the new build and the school worked very closely in partnership with the architects, builders and local authority to deliver a shared vision of a school for the 21st Century. Since then there has been continuous heavy investment in resources, particularly in terms of ICT, so that we have a learning environment that is the envy of many.

Devonshire has achieved Healthy Schools status through its commitment to meeting children's physical, social, emotional and academic needs, through reducing health inequalities, promoting social inclusion and raising pupil achievement through school improvement. Children start at our school with attainment well below that typical for their age. A high proportion of pupils have learning difficulties and/or disabilities and there are a number of 'looked after' children.

Devonshire has a very real belief that every child does matter and there is a whole school ethos and commitment that permeates through all that we do. In terms of participation, and enabling pupils to enjoy and achieve, Ofsted noted that "pupils enthusiastically enter into the wide range of sporting and healthy living activities offered by the school". In order to raise aspirations, a highly successful careers forum has been staged, demonstrating the possibilities for positive contribution; this good practice has been shared with other schools in Blackpool.

Devonshire has come on a unique journey and we believe that there is something very special about our school, cherishing this particular Ofsted comment: "Devonshire is a happy place for pupils to learn".

Securing Accountability The Headteacher of Devonshire Primary Academy is accountable to a wide range of groups, particularly pupils, parents, carers, governors and the MAT. He/she is accountable for ensuring that pupils enjoy and benefit from the high quality education at Devonshire for promoting collective responsibility within the whole school community and for contributing to the education service more widely. The Headteacher is legally and contractually accountable to the Multi Academy Trust for the Academy, its environment and all its work.       
