Cardiovascular Endurance Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart and lungs to supply the working muscles with oxygen so they can work for longer without fatigue.

Marathon- so they run a longer distance without there muscles fatiguing Football- so they can last the full 90 minutes of football without fatigue.

Impact on performance

Having high cardiovascular endurance will allow you to do physical activities for longer without fatigue.

Having low cardiovascular endurance will only allow you to physical activities for a short time before fatiguing.

Muscular Strength Definition The ability to overcome resistance.

Types Static- max strength that can be applied to an immovable object.

Dynamic- repeated contractions applied to a moveable object.

Practical examples of when it is used in sport Static- handstand Dynamic- football Explosive- shotput

Impact on performance Having low muscular strength will result in not being able to overcome resistance.

Muscular Endurance Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

The ability of a muscle or or muscle group to undergo repeated contractions and avoid fatigue.

Rowing Swimming Cycling

Impact on performance

Having low muscular endurance will result in not being able to do physical activities for as long because of fatigue.

Body Composition Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

A comparison of the percentage of bone, water and muscle within the body.

Endomorph- sumo wrestling.

Ectomorph- marathon.

Mesomorph- rugby

Endomorph- stocky build round physique Ectomorph- tall thin physique Mesomorph- big muscular physique.

Impact on Performance

Endomorph won’t be able to run for long because the mass they have to carry when.

Mesomorph might not be able to lift super heavy things like an endomorph would.

Ectomorph won’t be able to do thing that a mesomorph would because of there low muscle mass

Flexibility Definition Max movement at a joint.

Practical examples of when it is used in sport Diving, gymnastics, swimming.

Impact on Performance

In diving, a lack of flexibility means the diver may not get full into a pike position which will result in marks being taken of by the judge and less chance of winning the competition.

Agility Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

The ability of the body to change direction at speed and under control.

Football- defender chasing the ball after a pass.

Basketball- to get the defender out of the way.

Impact on Performance

Low agility could result in a low score in running in and out of poles and it wont give that time to get the football after its passed away.

Speed Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

The maximum rate of which an individual is able to perform a movement or cover a distance in a period of time.

100m sprint Football Rugby

Impact on Performance

In 100m sprint you won’t get a good score because you not fast enough and in football you won’t be as fast as the attacker so he will just run right past you.

Co-ordination Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

He ability to use different (2 or more) parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently

Tennis Swimming

Impact on Performance

In tennis you won’t have good balance when running and hitting the ball.

In swimming you will lose rhythm of the stroke therefore messing up your swimming.

Power Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

Also known as explosive strength or anaerobic power. This is the product of strength x speed

Impact on Performance

In shot put, a lack of power in the throwing arm means that your arm extension in the push is not as fast or as effective. This will result in a shorter throw and less chance of winning an event

Balance Definition

The maintenance of the centre of mass over the base of support

Football, gymnastics, running

Having low balance in gymnastics can result in a fall giving less points and less chance of victory.

Reaction Time Definition

Practical examples of when it is used in sport

The time it takes to react to a stimulus.

The sound of the gun before a race, the goalkeeper during a penalty shot.

Impact on Performance

Having high reaction time gives you that split second to get a head and do the task that’s given.

Having slow reaction time results in that one second difference being lost so there’s less time time to do the task thats given.
