Welcome to
Year 5! I hope you all had a fantastic summer and I look forward to working with you and your child this year. Our website pages will be updated throughout each half term with all the exciting things we will be learning about in Tigers’ Class.
In addition to reading at home, the children will also be set other tasks to support and develop their learning. The children will receive weekly spellings on a Monday to learn at home and will be tested each week (Friday). Each half-term, the children will also be set a project that is based around our theme in class. Further details will be sent out about each homework project set. PE and Swimming
In year 5, we attend swimming lessons every Friday at Nye Bevan. We will need swimming costume/trunks, swimming cap and a towel. Additionally, we have PE on a Wednesday and will need a full PE kit in school (blue shorts, blue top and trainers/pumps).

Curriculum Information for this half-term Our Main theme for the first half-term will be ‘Earth and Beyond…’. During this theme, will be learning about the solar system in Science, different time zones around the world in Geography and in History, we will be learning about the history of space exploration. In English, we will be starting this half-term looking at play scripts and the children will be planning and writing their own, ready to perform! We will then use our knowledge of the solar system to write our own Poetry based on the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. After designing our own Rockets, the children will then be planning and recording their own television broadcasts to inform us about their rocket launch! In Maths, we will be working on our understanding of place value, written addition and subtraction (including solving problems) and mental multiplication and division. Our RE topic this term is ‘The Bible’. During this topic, we will be discussing the different versions of the Bible and the children will be sharing their opinions about which they prefer and why. By looking at the titles given to the Bible, we will be interpreting the deeper meaning of its content. Additionally, we will link our Religious Education topic to the school Values Week as we link the Bible passages to Christian behaviour and values. We will be discussing the values that we consider to be important and throughout this topic, the children will be gaining a greater understanding of how and why the Bible is read and used by Christians.
Reading Please encourage your child to read at least 3 times per week. Every time your child reads, please could you ensure that their reading record is signed by a parent or guardian and that the reading record is in school each day. Reading records are collected in weekly and each time your child reads at home they will have the opportunity to move up their tiger on the reading challenge to earn rewards and prizes! Additionally, your child will have their individual log in to access Bug Club and Sumdog. Bug Club enables them to enjoy reading a variety of online books with questions to develop their comprehension skills.
