Children will know that print carries meaning and, in English, is read from left to right and top to bottom during guided reading and shared reading activities. Children will be able to segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together to read simple words and sentences. Children use some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence. Children will write their own name and other things such as labels, captions when describing the characters in stories. Children attempt to write short sentences in meaningful contexts to create their own short stories and letters.

Children will listen to stories linked to our theme with increasing attention and recall and be able to retell stories shared in detail. Children will join in with repeated refrains and anticipate key events and phrases in rhymes and stories.
During discussion sessions children will listen and responds to ideas expressed by others.
Using knights and dragons, children will answer simple addition number sentences by counting the total of two groups. In practical activities and discussion, children will be able to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting. Using quantities and objects, children will begin to add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. Children will be able to sequence familiar events and begin to order the days of the week and months of the year.
