Art and Design Overview

2019-20

Our Art and Design Promise At Bishop Martin we believe that art is a vital part of children’s education and has a significant and valuable role in the broad and balanced curriculum we offer our pupils. Art contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and selfreflection. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing a curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential. We ensure that children develop their own thoughts and ideas, allowing them to develop pride in their artwork and foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts, and knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers. We ensure pupils have lots of chance to practice the basics so that they are able to use their knowledge to create their own pieces of art work.

Purpose of study Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Aims The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:    

produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

KS1- National Curriculum Subject Content Pupils should be taught:  to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products  to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination  to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space  about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

-Manipulate malleable materials for a purpose, e.g. pot, tile -Understand the safety and basic care of materials and tools -Experiment with constructing and joining recycled, natural and manmade materials -Use simple 2‐D shapes to create a 3‐D form -Change the surface of a malleable material e.g. build a textured tile 

Cut, glue and trim material to create images from a variety of media e.g. photocopies, fabric, crepe paper, magazines -Arrange and glue materials to different backgrounds 

KS1- National Curriculum Subject Content Key stage 2 Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils should be taught:  to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas  to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]  about great artists, architects and designers in history. 

Year 3

Use a sketchbook for recording observations, for experimenting with techniques or planning out ideas -Experiment with ways in which surface detail can be added to drawings.

-Draw for a sustained period of time at an appropriate level.

-Make marks and lines with a wide range of drawing implements e.g. charcoal, pencil, crayon, chalk pastels, pens etc.

-Experiment with different grades of pencil to create lines and marks 



Experiment with different materials to create a range of effects and use these techniques in the completed piece of work Explain what he/she likes or dislikes about their work
