The Governors of Bishop Martin Church of England Primary School COMPOSITION OF THE GOVERNING BODY The composition of the governing body is laid down in the Instrument of Governance dated 1 st September 2015.

September 2019 – July 2020 Our Governing Body consists of the following types of Governor; Foundation Governors Foundation governors are only to be found on the governing bodies of voluntary aided schools and some foundation schools. They are appointed by the body or bodies named in the Instrument of Government, namely the DCC of Christ the Servant Church and approved by the Diocesan Board of Education They are appointed to preserve and develop the religious character of the school, if it has a religious character, and to secure compliance with the trust deed.

Parent Governors Parents, including carers, of registered pupils at the school are eligible to stand for election as parent governors. They are elected by other parents at the school. If insufficient parents stand for election, the governing body can appoint parent governors.

Headteacher The head teacher has a place on the governing body, unless they choose not to be a governor. The head teacher's position cannot be filled by anybody else.

Staff Governors Staff governors are elected by the school staff. Both teaching and support staff employed to work at the school are eligible for staff governorship; volunteers are not eligible.

The head teacher makes arrangements for holding an election if there is a vacancy for a staff governor at the school.

Local Authority Governor Local authority governors are appointed by the local authority (formerly local education authority) or nominated by the local authority and appointed by the governing body.

Co-opted Governors

These are additional Governors who can sit on the Governing Body, bringing specific skills and experience. Co-opted Governors do not have voting rights.

The governing body ensures the school fulfills its statutory duties.

In 2019/20, based on the previous year’s success, we are continuing to operate a September business meeting followed by a Full Governing Board meeting every half term where standards and the supporting resource requirements will be discussed at each meeting. Nominated Governors will meet with the appropriate staff in school and report back to the Governors on their nominated responsibility in accordance with our scheduled cycle. We had success in 2018/19 and hope this continues to enable the FGB to improve the way we operate becoming more effective and efficient.

In 2019/20 Governors will be focusing on the following school priorities Key Priority 1: To Improve the Level of Greater Depth Learning in Science in Every Cohort (Relative to pupil Starting Points) Key Priority 2: To Improve the Quality and Level of Specialism of Curriculum and Subject Leadership Across the School Key Priority 3: To improve Wellbeing across the School Family As well as the three priorities above, the Governing Body are proud to offer high quality two year old Nursery Provision to local families from September 2019. The Governing Body have actively shown diligence, scrutiny and challenge in developing the Vision and Strategy for this provision.
