Phonics SPaG Phonics Play is free at the moment using the username: march2020 password: home If you check on the back of your child’s reading book the Phonics Phase will be clear. Reading

During the month of May we would have been doing our SATs. If you would like to have a little look at the style of questions your child would have been faced with, there are past SAT papers on the link below. It gives you guidance on how to administer the questions. I am not for one minute suggesting you sit your child down and test them but the guidance gives you an idea of how long the children would have for the paper etc.

You could even rewrite or print the questions, cut them up and have a SPaG hunt around your home/garden. Each time they find a question and answer it correctly they get a point. Don’t forget to log into Reading Buddy – I have altered some Reading Levels.

Again there is a link to last year’s SAT papers. I suggest you aim to complete Reading Paper 2 this week. (There is a mark scheme). Children are familiar with

this style of paper and in the real SAT would have no help to read the text or questions. There is a separate reading booklet and answer booklet in Paper 2.

I suggest you work through it together unless your child is happy to have a go independently. I don’t want to add any pressure to anyone so if this activity does not suit your child please promote reading for pleasure. This week we are continuing with our book – Little Evie in the Wild Wood by Jackie Morris.

Monday and Tuesday - Read the rest of the book via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkAY YFmpVwM. Discuss the ending. Look for clues about Evie and her grandmother’s relationship with the wolf. See resource sheets below to aid questioning and discussion.

Wednesday and Thursday - Give an opinion about the book overall. Record response. Book review ideas below.

Friday – Independent writing – diary entry of your week. Remember to include Y2 expectations. Copy can be found below.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely week! Did any of you decorate your house or celebrate VE Day? We made our own bunting, drew some pictures for our window and had afternoon tea – my favourite.

Y2 Writing Expectations Date Working towards the expected standard The pupil can write sentences that are sequenced to form a short narrative, after discussion with the teacher:  demarcating some sentences with capital letters and full stops  segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling some correctly  spelling some common exception words*  forming lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place forming lower-case letters of the correct size relative to one another in some of the writing using spacing between words.

Working at the expected standard The pupil can write a narrative about their own and others’ experiences (real and fictional), after discussion with the teacher:  demarcating most sentences with capital letters and full stops and with some use of question marks and exclamation marks  using sentences with different forms in their writing (statements, questions, exclamations and commands)  using some expanded noun phrases to describe and specify  using present and past tense mostly correctly and consistently

 using co-ordination (or / and / but) and some subordination (when / if / that / because)  segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly  spelling many common exception words*  spelling some words with contracted forms*  adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing e.g. –ment, – ness, –ful, –less, –ly*  using the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters in some of their writing  writing capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower case letters using spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.

Working at greater depth within the expected standard The pupil can write for different purposes, after discussion with the teacher: using the full range of punctuation taught at key stage 1 mostly correctly  spelling most common exception words*  spelling most words with contracted forms*  adding suffixes to spell most words correctly in their writing, e.g. –ment, – ness, –ful, –less, –ly*  using the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters in most of their writing.
