SECTION A-Activities and Provision 1.Civil Service Local Civil Service(CS) Local North West are working with local schools to provide FREE support for students through their innovative and fun employability skills programmes. All activities aim to raise student’s aspirations, help them prepare for the world of work and life after school, and will introduce them to the breadth of opportunities the civil service can offer as an employer.

Civil Service Local work closely with Cabinet Office to improve the culture, identity and brand of the Civil Service. We work across all government departments and some public sector organisations in regional teams to support the government’s reform agenda. The North-West team incorporates Cumbria.

The aims of the Civil Service 2020 vision are to work towards being a brilliant civil service and to reconnect the civil service with the communities in which they live and work, and since 2012, their Inspiring Young People Programme has been doing just that. By supporting students in local schools they hope to build strong relationships across the North West, challenge some perceptions and inspire the next generation by fostering positive attitudes to work.

How does it work?

CS Local engages with students at each stage of their education. Staff volunteer to work with local schools in the following ways: • • •

For Year 5& 6 primary school students staff give short, fun, 40-minute talks on a range of topics that introduce students to the world of work and raise their aspirations.

For Year 10 students, they run a six-week programme focussed on job readiness, confidence building and an introduction to the workplace.

For Year 12 and 13 students, they expand on the Year 10 course and include sessions on Civil Service Apprenticeships and career opportunities within the civil service.

3. Department of Work and Pensions(DWP) Jobcentre Plus Support for Schools Jobcentre Plus support for schools is intended to assist schools in England to deliver their statutory duty to provide high quality, independent and impartial careers advice for school years 8 to 13. We operate in three broad areas; • • •

Providing advice on routes into traineeships and Apprenticeships Sourcing and advising on work experience opportunities Providing advice on the local labour market (including soft skills employers value, such as team work and commitment)

The support is demand-led by schools, responsive and flexible, and is currently available in East Lancashire and North Lancashire.

It is run by the charity ‘Education and Employers’ and aims to connect state schools and colleges with employers and people from the world of work. The Lead Corporate sponsor is Bank of America, Merrill Lynch.

Volunteers pledge one hour a year to help in a state school or college near where they live or work.

This is usually giving a talk about their job and career route. Though employers can offer help with CVs, interview practice, numeracy and literacy and take up a role as a school governor.

Lancashire Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge for Schools(ASK) Project

The Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge for Schools(ASK) Project has been commissioned by the National Apprenticeship Service, part of the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), to support the government’s target of achieving 3 million apprenticeship starts by 2020.

Through the project delivery partner in Lancashire, the Lancashire Work Based Learning Forum, a range of inspirational and engaging apprenticeship and traineeship support is offered to all learning establishments offering provision to years 10,11, 12 and 13.

The project aim is to work with Teachers, Careers Advisers, Parents and Governors, alongside other key partners, to support schools and ensure that they meet their statutory duties regarding apprenticeships and traineeships.

The services to be provided will include: • • • • • • • •

Group Assemblies/Information Sessions Sessions to sign students up to find an apprenticeship Apprenticeship application workshops for smaller groups of students Apprenticeship events Apprenticeship Champion training for Careers Advisers and Teachers Staff (Teacher and Governor) Continuing Professional Development(CPD) Guest Speakers-Apprentice and Employer Ambassadors Parents Events

6. Lancashire Young Apprentice Ambassador Network (LYAAN) The Lancashire Young Apprentice Ambassadors Network now has in excess of 40 members.

The Lancashire Young Apprenticeship Ambassador Network (LYAAN) is part of a county-wide drive to increase training and employment opportunities for young people and improve skills. There is a significant drive in Lancashire to improve the level of access to information about Apprenticeships and the Apprenticeship Ambassador scheme is the programme that is spearheading this drive.

The apprenticeship ambassadors are all either current apprentices or former apprentices who want to highlight the benefits of taking part in the Apprenticeship programme to employers and other young people. They will speak about their experiences at schools, youth clubs and careers fairs and meet employers face to face to encourage them to take on Apprentices.

The network is a joint initiative set up by the Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub, which is part of the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and the Lancashire Work Based Learning Executive Forum, a consortium of Lancashire apprenticeship providers.

To book an Apprentice Ambassador: The aim in Lancashire is to get more young people, schools and parents to be aware of and understand Apprenticeships. Young people say on a regular basis that they were never aware of

Apprenticeships; that they were not told about the opportunities by their school, teachers or parents.

Rather than have representatives from the skills sector promoting the value of Apprenticeships, we are supporting current or recently qualified apprentices to attend school events and talk about their experience as an Apprentice. 9.National Citizen Service NCS is a transformational experience open to all 15-17 year olds.

The programme takes place outside term times and includes residential experiences. National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government backed programme managed and delivered by Inspira with a number of experienced local delivery partners in Cumbria, Lancashire, Blackpool, Blackburn with Darwen and Fylde Coast.

Aimed at 15 and 17 year olds, NCS is an exciting journey which takes place in the Autumn, Spring and Summer holidays. The cost is £50 or less. Once young people have said Yes to NCS, they will be involved in a series of introductory days to meet their team mates. Then it is an action packed residential away from home, with team building, problem solving, challenging outdoor activities and lots of fun.

Next they get involved in their community, where they will learn new skills and work with local businesses and organisations. They will identify the challenges it faces and start to form ideas for their social action project.

They’ll design and deliver a social action project to help a charity or local cause of their choice.

Working in consultation with local people they will put their plans into action over 30 hours. They’ll make a real difference to people’s lives, their community and their future.

Finally, it’s time to dress up and celebrate at a graduation party along with their team mates, parents, teachers, carers, dignitaries and the press.

With opportunities beyond the core programme, graduates can look forward to becoming part of a wide network giving them access to unique opportunities such as becoming an ambassador, NCS youth board member, mentor or other volunteering activities.

They support schools and colleges with the I Care Ambassadors scheme: I Care...Ambassadors provide a range of tailored activities to different audiences and settings, which help to enhance any type of careers and employment activity. Ambassadors can support you to measure the success of the activity by using an online survey tool. This tool allows them to gather feedback from those attending, to find out whether they are more likely to consider a career in care following the event.

They work with the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Physics to develop their careers resources. They provide clear, consistent guidance for young people and their teachers.

The resources cover both university and apprenticeship routes into engineering. They help young people to understand more about the world of engineering, learning about engineers working in real jobs, solving real problems.

Launched in July 2012, this national competition gives secondary school students an opportunity to experience running a real life business within their school, thereby stimulating a more enterprising culture across Britain.

The competition runs during the autumn term and stands out from other national enterprise competitions because each team has the opportunity to write a business plan and then pitch for a start-up loan of up to £1000 per school from Peter himself in order to launch and run their businesses. Trading kicks off in November and runs for a four-week period, with the overall winner being announced in the January.

14. U-Explore - Start Profile Start is a free careers software that helps you guide your students towards clear, comprehensive and impartial information that’s always relevant to them. When the time comes for students to begin moving towards the world of employment, sometimes the right information isn’t always available to them or that easy to understand. Focusing on the highest UK and international standards, employers and training providers can use the activity to benchmark their own apprenticeship and training programmes.

Run a3nnually, and managed by WorldSkills UK, the competitions cover over 50 skill areas from construction and engineering through to creative and hospitality.

The UK competes in international skills competitions, taking part in EuroSkills and WorldSkills.
