I I Welcome to our Summer 2018 newsletter. There have been many positives to celebrate during this year at Guiseley School, as well as periods which have required reflection. Once again our students have shown their incredible talents and resilience. We expect the next academic year will see us move into the first phase of a two-year new school build, something we have been working towards for a long time now and are very excited about. There are a number of developments ahead as we look to advance and improve both our curriculum and extra-curricular offer. The current leadership team at the school is looking forward to the opportunity to work together with students, parents, and staff throughout an entire academic year for the first time. Joining us on that journey will be several new additions to our staff. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the students and staff for their hard work, parents for their continued support. We look forward to the challenges ahead and welcoming the students back to school in September.

On Friday 06 July, twelve sixth formers went to Nepal for three weeks on this year’s World Challenge trip. Having done all of the fundraising themselves, challengers will be spending time volunteering in a school, doing a six day trek near the Annapurna range as well as enjoying some exploration and relaxing time in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Students have been responsible for organising all of their activities as well as food and accommodation, clearly developing organisational and teamwork skills along the way.

n the evening of Wednesday 7th February, members of the Guiseley School debating society took part in the first rotary club ‘Youth Speaks’ competition, held at the Grove Methodist Church in Horsforth. They competed against teams from other local schools in speeches on a topic of their choice, and topics included ‘ Vegetarianism; The future of mankind’, ‘Mental health in young people and social media- W hat is the link?’ and ‘W hy RE should be compulsory in schools’.

Teams from Guiseley school won both the senior and intermediate categories, with Majid Qahwaji, Bobby Mao, and Owen Sage delivering a passionate plea for Britain to improve its foreign aid to poor countries, and Ross Tanner, Ali L loyd , and Beth Dillon arguing that Britain has lost the essence of good education.

An inspiring evening was had by all involved , and every person involved should be very proud of themselves. Members of the Rotary Club who were in the audience said they were ‘blown away ’ by the way that our students spoke and by the depth of knowledge and understanding on difficult issues shown by the young people speaking.

O

ur end of year production this year was ‘School of Rock’ based on the film starring Jack Black and with music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

For three nights our school hall was transformed into Horace Green School and the Palace Theatre for the Battle of the Bands. The energy and enthusiasm of our cast was truly outstanding as they played to packed audiences each night who sweltered under the heat of the most amazing ‘rock lighting’ by Year 9 student Isaac Phillips. Audience reactions were incredibly positive:

Sixty-five Year 13 students went to Leeds Beckett University on Friday 10 November to collect their Progression Module Certificates of Achievement.

This is a university accredited award where students learnt essential skills to help them when applying for Higher Education or employment.

The graduation ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the Headingley campus with each student being presented with their award on stage

for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. After wards there was a reception buffet where students and academic staff could socialise. The event was a great success. Many of the students had not expected it to be a formal University award ceremony but were very happy that their achievements had been recognised in this way.

Congratulations to all of the students who were awarded their certificates. Guiseley School is very proud of your achievement.

ver a week during May, students from Year 7 took part in a series of knitting workshops in partnership with The Crafts Council, Leeds Arts University and University of Leeds. Working with Knit Lecturers Liz Gaston and Dr Jane Scott from the University of Leeds, students been explored the potential of knitting as an artistic and sculptural technique, learning how to finger knit, create largescale nets and canopies, as well as becoming human knitting machines!

Student feedback from the experience was positive, and they said that they loved making “masterpieces” and have now learned how versatile knitting is and how easy it can be to do!

Dr Scott said: “Your students were fantastic.

We were very impressed with their attitude, their interest, and their ambition! The work that

was made was outstanding and we are really looking forward to exhibiting in Leeds as I think there will be a lot of interest in the work and the school. You are clearly giving them a fantastic arts education and it is brilliant to see how you are providing such a creative approach to learning.”

The final products of their hard work were displayed as large knitted canopies in the school, as well as at a public exhibition at Leeds Arts University in July.

BBC Radio 2’s annual competition for young writers, ‘500 Words’, held its final at Hampton Court Palace in June and I was lucky enough to win tickets to attend.

This year saw over 134,000 entries from 5-14 year olds across the UK, including some from Guiseley School students. This is the 6th year that I have been a volunteer judge and over 5,000 teachers, librarians and retired teachers mark the stories, choosing the best ones that go forward to be judged by a panel of experts.

Broadcasting the final live during Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show on Radio 2 meant a really early start. I drove down to London the night before after school and then had to be up before 5am to get to the Palace for 5.30am. The queue stretched for 400 metres down the side of the Thames and back again; it was full of children, parents, grandparents and judges like me, all dressed up for the occasion in their best outfits.

stage to talk the audience through how the show would work. He gave us plenty of chances to practise our cheering, explaining that the audience’s reaction to everything going on would be really important to make good radio for those listening at home.

The winning entries, a gold, silver and bronze from each of the two age categories, were read out by celebrities; Dara O’Briain, Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy from the ‘Harry Potter’ films), Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn from Harry Potter), Amanda Abbington, Shobna Gulati and David Walliams. Their readings brought the stories to life and a couple of the stories really cast a spell over the audience, silencing us all and moving some to tears.

GEOGRAPHY

Geography students have been out enjoying the summer heatwave on a range of fieldtrips. Year 7 students conducted environmental investigations at Bolton Abbey; Year 10 students surveyed river meanders near Gordale Scar and investigated the impacts of tourism in Malham; and Year 12 A-Level students spent four days in the sun-soaked Lake District collecting data for their coursework.

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June, 36 Year 9 students completed their assessed Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition.

This involved them walking selfsufficiently from Guiseley to Curly Hill in Ilkley on Saturday and then to Bolton Abbey on Sunday.

438,329 young people are currently doing their Duke of Edinburgh programme 2,860,675 awards acheived since 1956 (in the uk) They were not allowed to visit any shops and had to carry all of their camping equipment and food for the two days.

The students were excellent and were praised by their assessor for their organisation and teamwork skills.

Although very tired, students were very positive about the experience and many said that they enjoyed the expedition section a lot more than they thought they would. To complete the whole award, students also had to complete a practice expedition from Guiseley to Harewood House in April and now must sign off their physical, skill and volunteering sections. Well done to all who took part.

On Tuesday 27 March 2018, myself, 14 other classmates and nine Year 13 students went with three members of staff: Mrs. Young, Mr. Wakefield, and Mrs. Smith, to conduct a naturalistic observation of the primates at Chester Zoo.

W hen we arrived , we went to a workshop which allowed us to discuss Harlow and his monkey experiment regarding attachment theory, but also Lorenz and his goslings. We applied our knowledge of imprinting by answering questions and were given a group task on different primate skulls – specifically: how they varied in shape and size and why. We learned that the more vocal monkeys were more communal and preferred to be in large numbers for social interaction and safety.

After this talk, we went to conduct our naturalistic obser vation of a small group of Spider Monkeys. We were given a worksheet which allowed us to record visible data given to us by obser ving the monkeys. This included tallying certain movements or behaviours within a set time period e.g. 8 minutes and concluding why this behaviour was happening. For example: was it the time of day, or the temperature of the room? Or was it if there was an infant involved? After finishing the obser vation, we were given free rein to look at any other animals that we wanted to and I became the map reader, directing everyone in my group to the animals we wanted to see. If there was anywhere we wanted to stay for a longer period , I would factor this into the time we had left. This was my favourite part of the day as I was able to obser ve how different animals’ behaviour compared to each other and their species in the wild

As last year’s winner of the Ilk ley Sevens, and the W hite Rose trophy in the cabinet, the boys arrived with the heavy weight of expection on their shou lders. T hey were k nocked ou t in the first rou nd by last years fellow finalists R ipon, placing them in the plate competition.

The L ibrary has rec ently been hosting Year 1 3 w ork as part of the A rt ex hibition as w ell as the annual Bake off.

We have had over 30 Word millionaires w ith the A c c elerated reader programme, Q j ayne in Year 8 again w as in the overall lead w ith over 7 million w ords read but several students w ere keen to c atc h him up w ith several students in both Year 7 & 8 reading more than 4 million w ords.

Congratulations to Matilda and Freya in Year 7. Both maintained a 100% pass rate in all the quizzes they took this year. Well done.

RAF LEEMING

On Thursday June 28 we took a group of Year 10 and 12 students to RAF Leeming. The visit was kindly organised by Flt Lt Phil Todd who is also a governor at Guiseley School. The purpose of the visit was to show students the huge variety of jobs and careers that they can do in the RAF. We were shown all over the base and saw everything from the communications base to the catering facilities, the sports facilities and the transport depot with its incredible array of vehicles. Finally all the students were given a one to one tour of the awesome Hawker jet - this was done by the pilots themselves which was amazing! The students (and staff ) all got an incredible amount from this visit. We were all so impressed by the amount of activity that goes on at RAF Leeming and from the feedback given we know that some of the students are definitely going to be looking at careers in the RAF. We would like to thank everyone involved who made us feel so welcome and gave up their precious time to show us around, especially Flt Lt Todd and his team - What a Great Day!!!

GAMMA It has been a fantastic year for our House System at Guiseley School this year. We have had a huge array of activities, competitions and events, all of which have shown how well we can build team spirit at Guiseley and all work together for our Houses. The amount of students and staff who have earnt House Points this year has been staggering, so well done and thank you to you all!

This year, the winners of the overall House competition are, for a second year running, team GAMMA! This was due to the outstanding dedication of a huge number of our students across all key stages, but special mentions must go to 7B, 7W, 8B, 9B and 10B for simply outstanding levels of contribution, well done!

As always the House Drama was a runaway success, with a huge variety of shows all written by and starring students from each House. This year’s winners were Omega - well done to them!

We had a variety of artistic competitions, including Christmas card design, design a jersey for the Tour De Yorkshire, Valentine’s Day card designs, as well as the increasingly popular Photography competition. The standard of entries into the Photography competition this year was outstanding. We can honestly say that GUISELEY SCHOOL SUMMER 2018 NEWSLET TER

there was no difference between staff and student entries, and that we certainly have the next Ansel Adams or Dorothea Lange waiting in our student population! Most high congratulations go to Alexia Clayton-Bodkin, Joshua Slater and Holly Careford for winning the student section of the competition!

Finally, we have a new club up and running which has been so successful with a certain dedicated group of students that we have decided to continue it for a full term, and into the next academic year!

Countdown, the ever popular TV show has come to Guiseley School and students are loving it! Last 21 term’s winner was Sian Rudley-Myers... could you be the next champion and take her on? Put your numbers and letters knowledge to the test, and see what you can do!

It has been an excellent year, and following this, I’m excited to head off to the Guiseley School Bake Off! Incredible! Until next year!
