Mathematics at Key Stage 3 Miss S Butler Head of Mathematics

Mathematics at West Hill • Curriculum targets traditional GCSE skills at key stage 3.

• Incorporating new curriculum skills.

Assessing Pupil Progress • We use APP sheets at the end of each sub topic.

• These sheets will not give a grade but it will give details of what your son can do to improve. EBI and MRI are common practice.

• Assessment is ongoing throughout the year.

There will be 4/5 large assessments.

Unit 5 Averages

Objective Core I can solve problems involving averages and range e.g. write down two numbers with a mean of 8 and a range of 4 I can identify the modal class interval for grouped frequency distributions I can find a missing value in a set of data if the mean is known I know the advantages and disadvantages of different types of average I understand the impact on mean and range when all values in a set of data are increased I understand the impact on mean and range when a new value is added to a set of data I can discuss when one average is more appropriate and the limitations of each average Challenge I can draw a cumulative frequency curve and find the median value I can compare distributions and make inferences using the distributions and measures of average and spread EBI

Assessment • Regular unit assessments to assess pupils’ knowledge and understanding. • The department will track all pupils and intervention could be an option to assist pupil progress.

Homework • Maths homework is set once per week.

• Homework could be paper based or set on mymaths.co.uk.

• Homework can be self, peer or teacher assessed.

Independent Learning Numeracy – multiplication tables – all boys will be told how to log on to the PiXL TT App; addition/subtraction; real-life situations(e.g. shopping, currency) Classwork books – review homework; explain classwork; use the APP sheets to extend/consolidate learning.

KS3 revision guides can be purchased from school in September 2018.

Number – numeracy, fractions, decimals, percentages.

Algebra – generalising situations by using formulae; expressions, equations.

Geometry and Measures – area/perimeter; measure; transformations Statistics and Probability – Probability; collecting and representing data.

Foundation (Grades 1-5) • Number 25% • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change 25% • Algebra 20% • Statistics and Probability 15% • Geometry and Measures 15%

Higher (Grades 4-9) • Number 15% • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change 20% • Algebra 30% • Statistics and Probability 15% • Geometry and Measures 20%

The New GCSE..... • There are three papers each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. • Paper 1 is non-calculator and papers 2 and 3 are calculator papers.
