Every one of us has a tremendous opportunity to shape our own destiny and this opportunity begins at the Academy. We are determined that The Samworth Church Academy will be the passport to a very bright future. We believe that the greatest gift you can give young people is a blank canvas. Or, put another way, the mindset that anything is possible and achievable. That you really can be who you want to be. That you can grow in confidence, overcome barriers and flourish. If you are surrounded by adults who truly believe this, in an environment that exudes this spirit, you are surely more likely to do well and achieve your goals.

Isn’t this idealistic? Isn’t this placing the emphasis on the

student rather than the wider curriculum? Won’t there be challenges with such an innovative approach? Yes, Yes and Yes. It is also exciting, motivating and refreshing and is how we do things at this Academy. We will take 11-18 year olds and prepare them for adult life. We have created a safe and happy place that children enjoy attending. We stimulate and challenge them with outward bound activities. We ensure that this place is a stranger to bad behaviour.

In short, we help our students become the people they want to be.

We are building an Academy that takes the very latest thinking on what makes a great school and put it into practice. Our aim

is to create a high quality environment for everyone to succeed in, whether they are a student, parent, teacher or support staff member – a local school for local people!

Tries New Ways of Teaching – we use different approaches of teaching and learning. For example, we use Outward Bound activities that develop great teamworking and leadership skills.

Specialises in Business and Enterprise – this helps students learn how the world of business works.

Business and enterprise are core subjects and feature across the curriculum.

Works with the Community and Other Schools – we work closely with parents, other local schools and colleges and build on existing partnerships in the



local area for the benefit of the whole community. In the evening the Academy offers its facilities to the local community.

Respects the Environment – for example, our new Academy building has been built to be environmentally friendly.

Our vision is to create an environment that provides the best start to a bright future for all our students. Our vision is to enable our students to achieve their true potential in the broadest possible sense. We have realised this vision by offering a wide range of courses catering for as many interests and abilities as possible.

Within this Academy students come first. Everyone is valued and respected and encouraged to have a say in how their Academy is run.

The Academy aims to prepare students to live happy, fulfilling, rewarding lives and to be good citizens whatever they choose to be. The Academy is distinctively Christian in ethos and outlook, promoting tolerance and mutual respect. There is no place for bullying and other forms of unfair discrimination. Indeed we have very high standards and expectations of all students in everything they do including their appearance, attendance and behaviour. “Be the best you can be.�

Our aim is to be responsible for school leavers who have a great deal to contribute both in the workplace and the wider community. In part we achieve this as the result of our chosen specialism in Business and Enterprise. We give students a unique insight into the world of work by allowing them to experience being productive as part of a team. With the use of innovative teaching techniques and a full range of support, our students grown in confidence and play their part in building a spirit of enterprise and self reliance.

One of the distinctive features of The Samworth Church Academy is that we attach great importance on education outside the confines of the traditional classroom. In fact we believe that this is essential to our students’ overall wellbeing and balanced outlook. We expect all our students to be involved in a wide range of outdoor activities and wider curriculum experiences including residential trips and visits.

The Consequences of Behaviour programme is central to the way the Academy operates. It helps all members of the Academy community feel secure because we are really clear about what behaviour is unacceptable and what the consequences will be. It makes everyone feel valued because it is a way of making sure students are rewarded for good behaviour.

Consequences of Behaviour exists to allow teachers to teach and all students to learn.

Consequences of Behaviour is a consistent, fair and positive system which is applied in all lessons across all subjects.

Consequences of Behaviour means that positive behaviour is praised. However, everyone is clear about the consequences for negative behaviour.

Praise is the most important aspect of Consequences of Behaviour. Students should try hard to gain praise in all lessons and staff will always aim to award more praises than consequences.

Students will always receive a warning about their behaviour before any consequences are issued to them.

During lessons, students who receive consequences will have their names displayed on the consequences board.

Students must change their behaviour in any lesson where a C1 has been issued otherwise a C2 will be given.

If students choose not to change their behaviour it will result in a C3, the final warning.

By continuing their negative behaviour the student is given a C4. This means a removal from the lesson to the department’s Matrix Room and a one hour detention.

Failure to arrive promptly or to behave appropriately in the department Matrix Room will result in a C5 being issued.

Failure to complete or to behave appropriately in a C4 detention results in a C5 which is a day in the Consequences room at a later date.

Failure to report to the Consequences room before the start of the Academy day on the date given will result in a C6 which is an exclusion from the Academy.

The Samworth Church Academy is organised around each of our five schools. Valuing and caring for the individual is right at the very top of our priorities. We have put a lot of thought into how this care is organised. Each school is staffed by a team of tutors and support staff. Each school team is broadly based on the subjects that those staff either teaches or support. For example, the team of Mathematics and Business staff make up Sherwood School. Each tutor group, within each of the five schools, is made up of students from every year in The Academy. The typical size of a tutor group is 15 students, this helps us to create a family unit where older students support younger students in all aspects of their care, welfare and guidance. Normally, members of the same family are allocated to the same school but not necessarily the same tutor group. We believe it is important that the Academy is organised in such a way that every individual is well known and well cared for.

Each tutor group meets daily and each of the five schools will meet for assembly every week. The role of the tutor is very important at The Samworth Church Academy; every member of the teaching staff has a tutoring role.

Uniform Guidance

If worn, make up should be discreet and appropriate No coloured nail varnish, acrylic nails or false nails are permitted.

Hair colour is to be a natural colour and hair styles not deemed extreme.

No hats, caps or hoods are to be worn in school other than for religious reasons.

If belts are to be worn they must be black, discrete and appropriate.

No badges are to be worn on blazers other than those issued by the Academy.

Students are not allowed piercings of any kind and jewellery is limited to one watch (not a smart watch). Students are allowed to wear one wrist band in support of a charity.

Please Note We firmly believe that our uniform and general appearance policy will have a very positive impact upon setting the high standards that our Academy culture and ethos is based upon.

Students who fail to comply with our expectations surrounding uniform and general appearance will be asked to return home until they are dressed appropriately.

Repeated failure to comply with these instructions will be considered a serious breach of the Home

Academy Agreement and will be dealt with accordingly.

It is an expectation that students arrive at school well prepared for learning on a daily basis. Please ensure that your child has the right equipment available each day to complete their work during lessons. Each student should bring the following to school:     

Mobile phones and other equipment such as iPods and MP3 players etc. should not be brought into the Academy. However, should students have these devices about them they should be switched off at the Academy entrance and placed in a bag or pocket. They can be switched on at the end of the Academy day, once they have left the site entrance. If a student is seen with these items in the Academy they will be confiscated and we will arrange collection of the item by a parent/carer. Students are aware of this rule and any failure to comply should be dealt with according to the sanction policy.

It is Academy policy that under no circumstances should a member of staff be contacting children from their own private phone or computer. If this does happen parents should contact the Academy as soon as possible.

Of course, contact through Academy devices is perfectly acceptable.

If a student decides to bring into the Academy any valuable electronic devices or other valuable possessions they are brought in at their own risk. Under no circumstances will the Academy accept responsibility for any theft, loss or damage.

There are six rounds of reporting to parents within the Academy year and reports are produced for all students from Year 7 to Year 13. Reports are made available on the Parent Portal. Please see the Academy Calendar on our website for dates.

The Academy day may be extended to allow students to take part in other activities and clubs.

To enable students to be the best they can be, it is vital that they attend the Academy regularly and that they arrive on time. First lesson begins at 08:25 but students should aim to arrive at 08:15 and are ready to learn when the first lesson starts.

If students are regularly late, their tutor, with the assistance of parents, will help them tackle the issue. But remember it is the student’s responsibility to get to the Academy on time. C4 detentions are issued for unacceptable lateness.

Remember the students who achieve the most always have excellent attendance records.

Please may we ask for your cooperation in an important matter.

Occasionally it is possible for pupils who are receiving medical treatment for serious illnesses to be put at risk if they are exposed to measles, chicken pox or shingles viruses.

The best way to protect our students from measles is for all children at school to be immunised. Please would you discuss measles immunisation with your GP if your child has not already received it. If your child is suspected of having measles, you should let us know immediately.

Students who suffer from serious illness could also be at risk from chicken pox and would need to be given an injection within three days of contact. If your child is suspected of having chicken pox, you should let us know immediately.

It is also important that you let us know if there is shingles in your household.

Your child may not be at any risk whatsoever from this situation. However, the health and well-being of students who are at risk, does depend on the cooperation of all other parents and we hope you can help us in this matter.

All students must remain on the Academy site throughout the lunch period.

As we are totally committed to providing high quality food at the lowest possible price there will be no need for students to leave site to buy food. Of course students will also be welcome to bring a packed lunch.

Chocolate, sweets, fizzy drinks, energy drinks, and family size packets of biscuits and crisps should not be brought into the Academy and will be confiscated for collection by students at the end of the school day.

We know that the vast majority of parents will want to have confidence of their children’s whereabouts during the working day.

If there is a very good reason why your son/daughter needs to go home during the Academy day please contact us so that we can firstly discuss the situation and, where appropriate, grant permission to leave the site. We anticipate these circumstances to be rare but acknowledge there may be individual situations where such permission is appropriate.
