Place Value: Read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals. Convert percentages to decimal fractions and fractions. Find percentages of amounts.
English As well as weekly spelling and grammar lessons, 5M will be reading ‘Treasure Island’ by R.L. Stevenson in the first half-term and ‘War of The Worlds’ by H.G. Wells in the second, as part of our topic. We will use these books as stimuli for investigating a variety of genres - debates and persuasion, letter-writing, descriptive writing of characters/setting and book reviews. We will be studying metaphor poetry by Wes Magee and use this to write our own poems about space. We will also be visiting Jodrell Bank in Cheshire to find out more about our space topic. In grammar, we will be looking at: Using punctuation: full-stops, capitals, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes for possession, commas in lists and commas to clarify meaning. -
Using adverbs, prepositional phrases and expanded noun phrases.
-
Using brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis.
The children must continue to read their reading book daily. Please ensure that their book/record is sent in each day signed and ensure they complete their homework which is sent home on Friday.
Science
Addition and Subtraction: Add and subtract numbers mentally and on paper, with increasingly large numbers. Use rounding to check answers to calculations and levels of accuracy. Multiplication and Division: Multiply and divide numbers mentally and on paper, with increasingly large numbers. Use rounding to check answers to calculations and levels of accuracy. Measure: Calculate area and perimeter of regular/irregular shapes.
Geometry: Investigate regular and irregular 2d shapes. Use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles. Statistics: Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables. Plot and interpret data in line graphs. The children must also continue to learn their Rock Star tables at home and complete their weekly homework which is sent home on Friday.
P.E. The children will work together as teams to play cricket and basketball as well as participate in athletics in preparation for Sport’s Day.
Topic
Forces In the first half-term, through a range of scientific enquiry and investigations, children in 5M will learn to:
• Explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object.
• Identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction that act between moving surfaces.
• Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. Earth and Space In the second half- term, through a range of scientific enquiry and investigations, children in 5M will: Understand what the sun and solar system are. • Describe the movement of the Earth and other planets in relation to the Sun in the solar system. Describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth. Describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies. Use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.
Maths
In the first half-term, we will be finding out about the Viking invasions on Anglo-Saxon Britain. This will be brought to life by a visit from the theatre group, Tempus Fugit. In the second halfterm, we will be learning about the space race between America and the USSR. This topic will be enhanced with a trip to Jodrell Bank. In computing, we will research the space race and write our metaphor poems using text and graphics. We will also continue our unit on spreadsheets using Excel. In art and D&T, we will look at illuminated monastic texts and attempt to copy some. We will study famous paintings relating to space and the night sky, for example Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’. In music, we will be listening to and appraising ‘The War of The Worlds’ by Jeff Wayne as well as listening to various representations of ‘space’ in pop music. We will also be continuing with strings each Wednesday morning.

RE In the first half-term, through the first topic, ‘Transformation’, the children will learn about the significance of the story, ‘On the road to Emmaus’. They will then explore Pentecost and how the disciples received the Holy Spirit. Finally, they will be learning about how important the Holy Spirit is in our lives. We will celebrate the month of May by praying the Rosary daily and looking at elements of our Lady’s life. We will also explore Hinduism as a world religion, looking particularly at the pilgrimage to the Ganges. We will also be exploring the social teaching of the Catholic church and how we can continue to make a difference in our community. In the second half-term, we will be exploring two topics. The first, ‘Freedom and Responsibility’, looks at why it is important to have rules to guide us and explores how Moses needed to establish rules for the Israelites in the desert – the Ten Commandments. We will then look at Jesus’ new commandment of loving each other and the importance of keeping all these rules today. In the second topic, the children will look at ‘Stewardship’, focusing on how we can look after the world we have been given.
