Reflection:
As we continue our preparations to celebrate the birth of Jesus, John the Baptist begs us to be ready, open your eyes and listen to his message. John is telling us, stay awake, and make a way for the Lord through all the shopping, the Santas, the parties and festivities, in what is still a very dark world for many. Thankfully someone always steps up to speak like John; parents, grandparents, children, a friend, teachers. But do we listen? Let’s just reflect — there are many lonely voices. Somewhere at this moment a child is crying — crying for love, or maybe for bread. Somewhere a young person is crying — crying for a listening ear or an understanding heart. Somewhere an old person is crying — crying for a visit or a word from his/her children. There are a thousand unheard cries in our world, coming from the victims of injustice and neglect. Maybe we are listening too much to the wrong voices. Lord help us to listen to these voices. Above all, help us to listen to your voice telling us that we are loved by you and that we are to love one another. “Many parents give their children everything except themselves”. “Wisdom is the art of knowing exactly when to speak your mind, and when to mind your speech“.
