UPPER KS2 CURRICULUM JIGSAW – SUMMER ‘FASTER HIGHER STRONGER’ &

English

Writing will focus on myths, persuasive writing, jungle based fiction story and explanation writing. Reading will look at developing further higher level reading strategies and comprehension techniques (ready for SATs). SPaG will consolidate learning of clauses and phrases, use of active & passive voice and identifying and using the higher levels of punctuation. Class Novel: The Fire Thief by Terry Deary & The Orchard book of Greek Myths.

MATHEMATICS  

Children will continue to develop their reason and problem solving skills through all areas of maths. Arithmetic skills will be maintained through continuous morning maths and use of times table rockstar.

ART: (across the whole term)

3D sculpture using Giacometti ideas linked to Ancient Greece sports. The children will work creatively, adapting ideas, and taking risks when choosing tools, materials and media to produce their sculpture. They will record thoughts and experiences in a sketch book and review and revisit these ideas. Study an artist by analysing their work and develop ideas from different starting points.

HISTORY – through a study of Ancient Greek civilisation

Children will learn to: To acknowledge contrasting evidence and opinions. To describe the impact of historical events and changes. To understand contracting arguments and interpretations of the past. To use dates and a wide range of historical terms. To develop your own historical questions and hypotheses.

PSHE – The children will learn about: Helping others   

SCIENCE

Science over the term will focus on Earth & Space (linked closely to Ancient Greece) and then revisit life cycles specifically looking at animals within the Amazon biome. Describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system; describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth; describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies; use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. Describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird. Describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

RE through Buddhism & the church

Music – the purpose of music in our lives. An investigation on what works well.

GEOGRAPHY – Amazon study & Biomes Children will learn:

To ask and respond to questions such as what happened in the past that caused? ; How is it likely to change in the future? To interpret maps including scale, projections, thematic and digital maps. To name and locate an extensive range of places in the world. To use geographical language to explain key human and physical features and make links between people & places. To produce longer pieces of writing with a geography focus.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY – creating a textile for the adventure in the Amazon. Children will learn to create a 3D textile understanding pattern and layout, join materials in appropriate ways, plan the sequence of work and then look to review, refine and improve the item made.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Athletics –consolidating running and jumping skills for sports days. Increasing stamina levels, focusing on techniques. Striking & Fielding (cricket & rounders) Dance – native South American dances. OAA – teamwork skills.

COMPUTING Children will learn to:

Use programming skills to design and write programs using inputs and outputs to control external devices. Use variables and repeating sequences. Use a variety of software on different devices and show clearly they understand what acceptable online behaviour is.
