Friday 2nd March 2018 Our News!

Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Parents’ Evenings this week. It was lovely to be able to share with you all of the progress the children are making and to share with you their next steps of learning. Please see your child’s class teacher if you have have not yet made an appointment.

The children loved reading the ‘Whatever Next!’ story. They now know it so well that they can retell it using beautiful expression. Ask them to perform it to you! They used props to help them act out the story as well. They were able to write lovely lists of what they would take with them if they were going to the moon.

Yesterday we enjoyed celebrating World Book Day and all of the children looked fantastic in their costumes. Thank you! They enjoyed reading and talking together about their favourite books.

The space-station role play area is proving very popular with the children and is providing lots of opportunities for speaking and listening with their friends.

The children have enjoyed using the creative area to make rockets, aliens and other interesting creations. We have had to have a word with the children about how to use the resources appropriately, to think about planning what they will make and how to tidy up this area after they have used it!

The children are doing really well with remembering the phase 3 sounds that we have been learning, so thank you for practising these at home too. It really does make a big difference.

We have had great fun learning some new space songs and the counting down or back has helped us with our subtraction skills. We are able to solve problems by counting back, for e.g. 10 aliens in a spaceship. 2 get out to explore the moon. Now there are “9,8 aliens left.”

Thank you to all of the children who have made space rockets, aliens and other lovely spacethemed creations at home. These will make a lovely display.

OUR LEARNING Mother’s Day, Space and Science Week Next week we will start the week by reading ‘My Mum is Fantastic’ by Nick Butterworth. We will use this as an inspiration to think of describing words for our own amazing mums, so that we can write about them.

We will then continue with our space theme, by reading a lovely story called ‘Roaring Rockets’ and find out what the different parts of a rocket are called and what they are for. We will then move on to looking at non-fiction books about space to help us learn some new facts about different the planets and so on. We will be writing our own labels for rockets and writing sentences to make our own information books about space.

For our creative development we will be busy making Mother’s day cards and exploring using different media such as marbling inks, to create space themed art work.

In Phonics we will be learning to read and write the Phase 3 phonemes ur, ow, oi, ear and air.

In mathematics over the next few weeks we will look at doubling, halving and sharing, using real objects to help us. We will be sharing out ‘moon‘ rocks fairly with our friends and exploring halving the number of stars.

During Science week we will carry out lots of different investigations such as finding out which rocket can travel the furthest and which material will make the best waterproof space helmet for Baby Bear.

In PE we will be learning how to jump off apparatus and land safely and correctly with two feet.

We will also explore travelling over, under and through apparatus in different ways.

Our topic in RE is Belonging and our community. We will be reading stories about love such as ‘Guess how much I love you?’ and talking about who we love.

REMINDERS Earrings Please remember that earrings need removing on PE day (Friday) or plasters putting over them.

Long hair (whether boys or girls) should also be tied back for health and safety reasons.

Head Lice We seem to have a number of children suffering with this problem. Please can long hair be tied back for school at all times and can we please ask that you regularly check your child’s hair and treat them before they return to school if you spot any. Thank you.

News Books The news books will be coming home with your child today, as explained at Parents’ evening.

There is a letter inside to tell you all about them and each child will have a sound mat, which they can keep at home to help them. Any questions, just ask!

Space and Science Week We will also make our own flying rockets and need drinking straws that are in wrappers (like the ones from McDonalds.) We have quite a few but would ideally like some more please, if possible!

Share out some objects with your family, for e.g. sweets, toys and a pizza. How many or how much does each person get? Does it change if you share with a different number of people?

Please try to read your reading book every night.

Create (draw, paint, print) your own underpants with repeating patterns on that an alien would love to have!
