Friday 2nd March Wednesday Word – ENTHUSIASM Twitter - @saintoswalds THIS WEEK – During our Come and See sessions we have been finding out about all that we have learned during our topic of GATHERING and have joined in with an end of topic celebration. Within Literacy, we found out about Fairtrade and created posters to promote Fairtrade. We also listened to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and wrote sentences about the story. In Maths, we started our new topic on money and have learned the names of the coins and found out their value. During the afternoon sessions, we have planted seeds and found out about what plants need to grow. The children have also been going through our Assembly songs and poems and creating pictures for our assembly. The children were also involved in World book day and were visited by an author with his dog Monty.

During our phonics sessions we have focussed on Mrs Gill’s and Mrs Hart’s group – ai, and recapped he, me, be, we, she, see, was, they Miss Woolley’s group – sh and ch, and will go over previously learned words and introduce we and me Mrs Ryan’s and Mrs Riding’s groups – ai, and recapped he, me, be, we, she, see, was, they, are, all, for NEXT WEEK– During our Come and See sessions we will be starting our new topic on GROWING. Within Literacy, we will be listening to the story of the Hungry Caterpillar and writing about the story. In Maths, we will be using coins to buy items from a class shop and adding coins together. During the afternoon sessions, we will be practising our Mother’s day assembly and joining in with Waste week.

The children will also be looking at the question “Are all baby animals the same as their adult animal ?” and thinking about the life cycle of some of these animals.

WEEKLY CHALLENGE – We hope the children had a lovely half term holiday. This week we are asking the children to practise their assembly words. These words were sent out over half term and re-issued again on Wednesday. If your child has not received words please speak to the class teacher.

GETTING THE CHILDREN INDEPENDENT – We are asking all parents to try and give the children a little more independence in a morning when coming into school. Please could we ask that the children come up the steps to the classroom on their own. If you need to speak to the teacher over minor issues, then please wait until all the children have come in before approaching the door. If it is something that is going to take a little more time then please could you make an appointment at the school office.

SPELLINGS – Today we have sent home spellings with the children. The children keep these spellings at home and practise them during the week. We will be holding the spelling activity on the following Friday. We do not discuss results with parents each week unless we feel the need to. The children will be given their score at the end of the activity. If we do not need to speak to you then your child is coping fine with the spellings that we are giving them.

INSPIRE SESSIONS FOR THE SPRING TERM – We will be holding one more INSPIRE session this term where you will be able to come into school and work with your child on a variety of different activities. We hope that you or a representative can attend this session.

Understanding the World Inspire – Thursday 15th March – Class 1G 9am – 11.20am Class 1K – 1.10pm -3.30pm HEAD LICE – Please be vigilant and check your child’s hair daily.

GOOD SHEPHERD –Thank you to all the parents who sent in cakes. We managed to sell the cakes for most of the week. Next week is Class 2’s turn to sell cakes. Cakes will be sold at 10p each. Some children still have money left from this week, but if you wish your child to buy a cake in the afternoon each day then please send 10p to school on that day.

OTHER IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER –  Mother’s day Assembly – Friday 9th March (everyone is welcome)  Red Nose day – Friday 23rd March (details will follow)  New Life day – Wednesday 28th March (dress in Green and or yellow) ORGANISATION OF SHOW AND TELL –The children have been bringing items in for Show and Tell.

To make it fair for all children we are organising these Show and Tell sessions differently as from next week. We are giving the children a specific day to do their Show and Tell.

These days will be as follows – Children in Green House point group will Show and Tell each Monday.

Children in Yellow House point group will Show and Tell each Tuesday.

Children in Red House point group will Show and Tell each Wednesday.

Children in Blue House point group will Show and Tell each Thursday.

Your child will know which House point group they are in, however, if you are unsure please ask the class teacher.

Teachers Mrs Gill and Mrs Hart – Foundation Stage Class 1G and 1K Main Overarching Question – Do all things live and grow?

Overview of topic – Again we are linking our spring term topics with one of our come and see topic which is GROWING. We will start off by talking to the children about what things live and grow to gauge what the children already know. We will be setting up our role play area into a garden centre (outdoor area) and planting in our outdoor area. The library corner inside will be set up as a secret story telling garden with costumes for a bee, butterfly etc to encourage the children to role play stories involving the minibeasts etc. We will be thinking about all the different things that grow and live in our world from animals (including humans), minibeasts, plants and flowers. The children will also be looking at the life cycles of these and what we need to do to care for these to ensure that they grow healthy. To start the topic we will look at themselves and think about how they have grown and changed since they were a baby. During the topic we will cover all areas of learning with a big emphasis on the World. We will be showing the children how to use espresso to find out about plants and animals. Also during this topic we will be thinking about Spring and changing our seasons display. We will also go on a visit to the flower park to look for signs of spring. Throughout the term during dance we will be completing a hungry caterpillar dance. Which we will perform to each other at the end of term.

LC 1 What do plants This week is Fairtrade week where we will be finding out need to grow? about Fairtrade and what it means. We will think about what plants need to grow and set up an investigation to see what the plants need. During Literacy we will be focussing on Fairtrade and creating posters. We will also be listening to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. In maths we will be starting our work on money. Expressive Arts and Design - the children will be creating black and white observational drawings of the plants and flowers focusing on the size, shape and detail. When the observational drawings are complete the children will add colour to their observational drawings choosing from a variety of media- chalk, pastel, crayons or pencils. We will also be continuing to work on our mothers day assembly practising poems, songs and our words and creating our mothers day cards. Role play and drama (Expressive Arts and Design) will be a big focus this week as we will be role playing in the secret garden and the garden centre. We will also be doing a lot of planting in our area – plants, bulbs and seeds. The children will be continuing with the hungry caterpillar dance and continuing to look after the grass caterpillars.

LC 2 Do all baby This week we will be focussing on the story of the Hungry animals look like Caterpillar, the Ugly duckling and frog on a log which will their adult animal? give the children an insight into the lifecycle of these animals

During Literacy we will read the story of the hungry caterpillar, sequence the story and completing story maps for their own stories about the very hungry butterfly. During maths we will focus incidentally during the oral mental on days of the week to link with the hungry caterpillar and on money so that the children can buy from the garden centre in the outdoor area. Expressive Arts and design – We will be making moving caterpillars and butterfly pictures. They will be colour mixing in the outdoor area and creating beautiful butterflies that we will be able to hang in the outdoor area.

The children will also be performing their hungry caterpillar dance to each other.

This week we will be using our outdoor school environment a lot to go on a mini beast hunt and thinking about all the different habitats that the insects like to live in. During literacy we will be looking at the story of the Bad Tempered lady bird and thinking about the speech within the book. We will continue to think about creating story maps for our stories. During Maths we will be completing our Pre and Post learning activities. Expressive arts and design we will be making our own models of their favourite minibeast and a sequencing the lifecycle of the butterfly, plant and frog.

This week we will be focusing on Spring around school and our local environment. We will be walking to the flower park to go and find signs of spring. In Literacy we will be working with information books about spring and creating our own books about spring. During Maths we will be starting our new maths topic which will also continue after the Easter Holidays. Expressive art and Design - The children will be creating a group secret garden using a variety of material.

They will also be completing their own representations of Spring using a variety of Media. The children will be continuing to look after the grass caterpillars and the plants in the outdoor area.

For the final few days the children will be completing phonic and key word assessments. Within the afternoon the children will beworking on a presentation to show each other what they have learned from our topic of Growing. The children will be involved in creating pictures, singing songs and speaking infront of others during these two days.

Physical Development – the children will be using a variety of media materials and tools throughout the topic but we will also be covering a unit on dancing. During outdoor games we will be covering a unit on partner work using small equipment.

Literacy Phonics - We will still be having our daily phonics session where we will be recapping the sounds in phase 2 and 3. Revisiting all of the sounds and the key words. Our focus will also be on chopping and blending activities and segmenting activities. Guided Reading – The children will be continuing to learn the key words within phase 2 and 3 and will be reading phonics books that will help them with their chopping and blending skills. We will also be looking at

Spring poems.

Maths – where possible we will try to link our maths to the weekly learning challenge however our main focuses will be money with some work on days of the week. Expressive arts and design- a range of media and materials to create mothers day cards, Easter cards and Easter baskets.
