Head of the Schools and Colleges Liaison Founder of the College, University, School Partnership (CUSP) The University of Huddersfield has had a long standing, close relationship with Huddersfield New College for many years, involving visits to the Campus from both College students and staff as well as University staff delivering presentations and workshops in College on a regular basis. The partnership was formalised in early 2013; as a result the University guarantees interviews/auditions or offers to all Huddersfield New College students who meet the published academic and non-academic entry requirements.

The University has a very strong “STEM” offering, from Pharmacy to Automotive and Motorsport Engineering, as well as all the more familiar subjects such as Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. We are keen to work with and support College staff and students in these areas by delivering A Level Science practicals, lectures to stretch and challenge students in STEM subjects, visits to our STEM related departments, as well as working with staff on progression routes from College to the University.

The University of Huddersfield greatly values this strong and productive partnership and we look forward to seeing the relationship go from strength to strength.

Having good GCSE grades in STEM subjects will open the door to many careers, some obvious like medicine and dentistry but others less so, such as becoming a skate park engineer and sports statistician. Since working at Honley High School one of my overarching aims has been to improve the provision of STEM opportunities for our students. So that students can experience for themselves the wealth of possibilities that are open through STEM. At Honley High School we run a dedicated weekly STEM club – this is for year seven to nine and we have run many projects which have led to CREST awards at discovery and bronze level so far.

Educational visits are also an excellent way to inspire future generations of students to aspire to careers related to STEM. Honley High School runs a wide variety of trips including to Paris to visit the Science Park with a focus on Physics and Disney; a weekend in London to visit the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum; a chilly trip to the Moors to gather data for MICCI which monitors climate change, the Big Bang Fair and GCS Science Live. All of these receive positive feedback.

The STEM evening at Huddersfield New College has quickly become one of my favourite events we take students to visit. It provides our students with an insight into possible STEM based routes post 16. Staff are knowledgeable and the array of workshops, visiting employers and educational providers is ever growing.

Our students gain an insight into the vast array of careers open to them and more importantly, they acquire knowledge of the routes into STEM careers. The STEM evening also has had an unexpected impact in encouraging students not taking triple Science to realise that they can also pursue careers in the world of STEM and open their eyes to the myriad of paths that they can take post 16.

2018 is the year of engineering and the aim of this is to bring young people face to face with engineering experiences and role models and to diversify the current workforce in engineering to include more females.

This evening will help promote equality in STEM careers by showcasing the variety of paths. Having positive role models available for students to engage with and the chance to question people already working or experiencing STEM careers is a real opportunity for students.

A little about our STEM Hub...

The STEM Hub at Royds Hall Community School provides students with a range of opportunities to meet and hear from those working in the STEM industries. In other words...How do students know that they want to be a A Turbo Engineer, Paramedic or a Product Designer if they have never met one?

The Hubs run monthly and are hosted in our Deli Bar. Students have the chance to relax with a hot drink and snacks, before meeting the visiting guest who provides an insight into their career. Students have found these sessions incredibly useful, and are often surprised to hear about the challenges that can be involved!

Some of our visitors are supplied through the West Yorkshire STEM Ambassadors programme, but we have also hosted former students who have progressed to STEM careers, and other individuals connected to our school.

At these, our guests talk to students about what they do, how they got to be where they are, what they enjoy about the job, training and the opportunities available. There are usually lots of questions answered, and many guests make the sessions interactive with activities and videos!

Our other STEM Activities We have recently taken part in a STEM afternoon at Sygenta with support from Andy Booth at the Huddersfield Town Academy. Our students had the chance to take a tour of the site and participate in experiments and a competition - one student won a signed Huddersfield Town football! West Yorkshire STEM Ambassadors have also run a range of workshops. Our staff team support the promotion of STEM, and have recently got involved with the STEM Ambassador Equality and Diversity Champion Community Group to further increase aspirations and develop working partnerships.

Textile Workshop (Camira Fabrics) - Think there’s no future in textiles? Think again! In this interactive, hands-on and practical workshop, groups will have an opportunity to examine various materials and match these with technical descriptions; then decide which material sample/description is best suited to which customer sector. Attendees will have the opportunity to be involved in fun and informative group discussions to get a flavour to what it’s like to work as an apprentice in the textile industry.

DePuy Synthes is a company which designs, manufactures, 513 markets and distributes products for reconstructing damaged or diseased joints; this includes both implants and instruments. Many of the instruments used during surgery can look strangely familiar – forceps that resemble scissors, bone screws and hammers that seem to have come straight from your average DIY toolkit and even bone cement used to secure joint replacements!

But, all this equipment has to be specially designed for some of the most challenging environments: the surgical theatre and the human body. Try your hand at completing seemingly easy tasks in our surgery simulator and see first-hand the challenges our medical engineers have to overcome to make surgery happen. Then get the chance to redesign equipment to make it suitable for these difficult environments and test out your ideas to see if they can withstand the fast pace of surgery!

The University of Sheffield runs 6 Outreach Programmes that students can apply for at the start of Year 12. The 6 programmes are: Discover STEM, Discover Arts & Humanities, Discover Social Sciences, SOAMS, ADOPT and Discover Law. These programmes are 2 year schemes aiming to give students a taste of what it is like to study these subjects at University, and include, but are not limited to, practical sessions, taster days, and summer schools. They also provide students with support whilst applying to University (UCAS, interview, subject specific revision support etc.). Furthermore, these programmes aim to dispel some of the myths surrounding University so that students can get to know more about student life in general. If students complete the 2 year programme they are subject to guaranteed interviews and reduced offers for courses at The University of Sheffield.

Come and experiment with the Doppler’s gait plates and 3D jigsaws that our students use to develop their skills on the road to becoming a Podiatrist.

The Science of Sport

This is an active/hands on practical testing workshop showing the application of science in leading a healthy lifestyle. You will have the opportunity to try some simple, fun and informative tests that can be compared to national averages and answer some interesting questions such as: What is my BMI (body mass index) and how does it affect me in everyday life? What if I get a high score on the reaction time board – what does that say about my ability to play sport at a good level? If I use a hand grip dynamometer is it a valid test of my overall strength – would my coach pick me in a certain position in the team because of the result?

Chief Executive, The Media Centre What do you do?

I am Chief Executive of The Media Centre, a social enterprise based in Huddersfield.

As a not-for-profit organisation, we’re committed to supporting business growth, employment opportunities and talent development within the creative and digital industries. On a more individual level, my role allows me to identify the potential in young people, particularly those with a spark or idea that would benefit from some nurturing. I therefore take the lead on a number of programmes that encourage creative confidence, such as our own Code Club for 9-11 year olds. I also connect young people with more experienced mentors and help to widen networks between regional educational establishments and those of us in business well-placed to help.

How did you get to where you are?

At school, my ambition was to be an architect – a job that would incorporate my love for drawing with my interest in all things technical. But I soon learned that there were so many other career opportunities that would enable me to blend my creativity and artistic skills, with my interest in maths and science. One of my first jobs, for instance, was in the technical layout team at Hallmark Cards in Canada.

Every day I work alongside incredibly knowledgeable and talented individuals – games designers, software engineers and mobile app testers for example – who all started out with STEM subject interests. I have succeeded from a young age by proactively seeking out mentors and soaking up experiences in every role I’ve pursued. I’m therefore a huge advocate of collaboration between businesses, schools, colleges and universities, to facilitate a number of routes into industry.

What advice do you have?

Don’t underestimate the possibilities. STEM subjects underpin so many exciting careers, some of which you may not even know about yet. And you may not apply what you’ve learned in the same way as you would in a classroom, but the mechanics of the subject will prove an important platform from which you can grow.

One of the first things you need to learn as a games designer, for example, is physics. And as an app developer you’ll be well equipped in your role if you have an inbuilt tendency to experiment, try things, make mistakes and learn from them, as you would in science or engineering. The digital sector is evolving at such a pace, with the need to think ever-more creatively and analytically, that STEM subjects will only grow in their importance. Embrace this opportunity to be part of the innovation.

What kinds of activity can you support?

I’m happy to get involved in activities such as career talks or sector-specific workshops about the creative and digital industries, school visits to see such businesses in action, Code Club, mentoring and creative competitions.

How your school can access STEM Ambassadors

We work with schools so that you can access our database of FREE STEM Ambassador volunteers, enabling you to incorporate exemplary links to the world of work within your teaching. Each STEM Ambassador has a STEM background – they are usually experts or professionals in their field.

All of our STEM Ambassadors have also undergone an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to enable them to work with young people in school; and they have also attended an induction session with West Yorkshire STEM staff on how to approach classroom and school-based teaching sessions. Huddersfield Girl Geeks: inspiring, supporting, and uniting women and girls in STEM and digital.

Gender diversity in science and tech matters. Without women helping design and innovate women’s experiences and viewpoints are not taken into account and gender stereotypes and misogyny prevail – ever wonder why voice assistants like Siri and Alexa have female voices while AI Lawyers are male?

Some of the earliest pioneers of computing were women - from Ada Lovelace in 19th century to Grace Hopper in the mid-20th century there’s a long lineage of amazing women who have already blazed trails for us in the tech world, buy why have many of us never heard of them?

Huddersfield Girl Geeks is a new network aiming to support women and girls interested in science and tech. We have socials, where you can meet like-minded people and make new friends. We organise talks, where you can hear from and ask questions of inspiring women already working in the STEM industries. We offer free or low cost workshops and skill shares led by women in the industry so you can upskill and try new things. We talk about some of the big issues facing women in STEM and discuss how we can work together to overcome some of the barriers women often face when working in a male dominated industry.

We offer volunteering opportunities so you can inspire the generation of women in STEM. KICK START YOUR CAREER AT KIRKLEES COLLEGE Kirklees College can offer you more than most when it comes to Science Technology Engineering and Maths(STEM). The college offers specialist courses based at facilities designed with industry professionals in creative and digital industries, engineering, manufacturing, science and animal care courses.
