Year 1 Newsletter

Homework Homework will be set on a Friday and is due in on the following Thursday. Please make sure that your child completes their homework and that they are having a good go at it. Several children aren't handing in any homework which means that they aren't reinforcing their learning at home. There are opportunities throughout the week for your child to go to homework club which takes place each lunch time. There will always be a teacher on hand to support them. If you would like your child to go, then please tell me on that morning and I will send them at lunch time.

RE

This term we will be learning about Jesus and Easter. The children will take part in lots of activities including the Easter story.

English This term in English we will be working on facts about dinosaurs. We will also continue to work on where to put our full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.

Throughout our topic we will use lots of adjectives to describe dinosaurs, and work on our story telling using 5 key words. The key words are; Who, What, When, Where, The end. You can practise asking these questions when you read with your child to support them e.g. who is the story about? What happened at the beginning of the story? Where is the story taking place? This will then give them a structure when writing their own story in their Topic books.

GPS In grammar, punctuation and spelling we will be looking at question marks, exclamation marks, ‘ed’ and ‘es’ endings e.g. lunches vs lunch and basic sentence structure. We will also be looking at words that end in ‘ing’.

Maths In maths we are focussing on addition and subtraction, length and height and the time this term.

We will continue to work on numbers to 100 forwards and backwards as part of out maths starters.

Cornerstones Topic This term our topic is called ‘Dinosaur Planet’. It is all about….. DINOSAURS! The children are really excited about it. We will learn about when the dinosaurs were around, what some of their names are, who cavemen were and many other exciting things! As part of our topic the children will be making their very own museum for another class to see.

Computing We will be working on basic coding through giving simple instructions this term. This may be through our writing as part of our cornerstones topic.

Reading Please ensure your child reads at home and that their reading record is signed.

PE PE will be gym and games this term taught on a Thursday and Friday. The children should have both warm outdoor clothes and their gym shorts as we will be both indoors and outdoors.
