Welcome to our website!

I am very proud to be the Headteacher of this busy and successful school which children attend eagerly, leave with regret and remember with pride.

Our popular school is continuing to grow and we currently have over 390 children on roll. In September 2015, we moved into a brand new, two storey, two form intake school, which will eventually cater for over 400 pupils. It is a great building and the children love it.

Our OFSTED (June 2014) was very positive, particularly praising the school for the levels the children reach in reading and writing. The EYFS is a strength of the school, where all children make good progress through the good balance of focussed teaching and continuous provision, where the children learn through their own chosen learning activities. We are now striving to be an Outstanding school and we feel we already have lots of outstanding teaching in school.

We have a teaching curriculum to meet the needs of all learners. The teachers engage the children by focussing learning around the children’s interests, we learn outside at every opportunity. The children have great pride in their books, and rightly so.

Our teachers are all committed to ensuring lessons are engaging and children enjoy them. During book week, Mesne Lea was transformed into Hogwarts. Spiderman, Captain America, Transformers, Bella and numerous spiders and snakes have been recent visitors! The children enjoy many visits and trips, including two residential holidays. We are looking forward to taking delivery of our new mini-bus so that we can enhanced the opportunities we can offer.

The teachers, teaching assistants and PTA all support the school and ensure that there is a lot going on for pupils. From our ‘famous’ Halloween parties to extra-curricular clubs: Italian, dance, modelmaking, choir and cooking to name a few. to our Christmas fairs. We encourage all children to enjoy the wider opportunities that we provide for them.

We have always been successful in the sporting arena. Last year the netball team won the end of year rally. We also compete against other schools in: football (including girls’ football) cross country, hockey, handball, tag rugby and athletics.

Alongside other leaders at school, I am determined to lead the school to an Outstanding judgement – we are already on the way! I am also equally determined that the children at Mesne Lea experience all the opportunities that Primary children should have and they enjoy the best years of their lives, whilst becoming life-long learners.

About School We were judged by Ofsted to be Good in June 2014, and are now striving to gain an outstanding judgement. In recent years, we have had congratulatory letters from MP’s acknowledging our achievement. Most recently in 2015, where we were I of only 187 schools (out of over 14,000) to achieve outstanding KS2 results.

We have now received the award for being a Dyslexia Friendly School.

The school is two storey building which can accommodate 446 children.

The school is a true community school and many of our parents attended the school as children. All the staff work hard to ensure the children have a happy and safe time whilst attaining good levels of academic achievement. Achievement for the past two years have been above National averages. All groups of children make Good or better progress.

Our Mission Statement Mesne Lea is a Community Primary School which provides an attractive and stimulating environment where children feel secure and happy. The School’s main purpose is to develop each child’s full potential in all areas, irrespective of race, creed, ability or gender, through the highest standards of teaching and learning.

Learning is Important for Everyone

The Leaders and staff at Mesne Lea are committed to providing an education that promotes our ethos of ‘working together for individual excellence’.

It is important for everyone to learn. We engage children through indoor and outdoor learning, in the classroom and in the wider world. Each child is special and unique and we aim for each child to have high aspirations and achieve the highest standards. We want all children, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, experience or physical ability to achieve their potential. Our school is full of energy. We want all children to have both the academic and life-skills to succeed in the 21st Century.

Before School Club - £3.50 per session - 7.30 am to 8.55 am Our Before School Club offers our early bird parents help for those hectic mornings. Early morning starts or meetings never be a problem again. Children can choose from various activities that are on offer. Our staff are on hand to take the children to school for you between the hours of 7.30am and 9.00am.

Before School Club Benefits: Cereal, toast, crumpets and juice Children are encouraged to prepare their own breakfast to promote independence Friendly, comfortable and secure play environment

After School Club - £8.50 per session - 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm Our service is flexible and has been tailored to meet the demands of busy or working parents. Our experienced staff collect the children from inside school.

After School Club Benefits: Two options of a healthy snack, fruit, veg and juice Friendly, comfortable and secure play environment Various fun activities: arts and crafts, home corner, computers, sports (football, rounder’s, tennis), quiet corner and homework club.

Payments Payment is required, in advance, via ParentPay at the beginning of each half term. ParentPay, is a secure, on-line payment system.

The School Day School Day:

8.55 am to 3.30 pm

Registration: Lunch Time:

At 8.55 am all Reception to Year 6 children should line-up on their relevant playground and be escorted into school by their class teacher 9.00 am 11.30 am to 12.30pm - Nursery/Reception 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm - KS1 12.15 pm to 1.00 pm - KS2

Playtimes KS1 and KS2 have a morning and afternoon playtime, when needed. These sessions are supervised by members of staff.

Early Years Outdoor play is integrated into each day for children in Nursery and Reception.

Attendance 2016/2017 The actual attendance percentage from 5 September 2016 to 21 July 2017 was 95.24% Regular, punctual attendance is vital to your child’s success. Normally a good night’s sleep is sufficient to give children the appetite for a demanding day at school.

Parents are asked to keep the school informed, in advance if possible, of all problems, which may prevent punctual attendance, or might impact on a pupil’s performance e.g. bereavement, serious family illness etc.

It is the Parents/Carers responsibility to inform school of their child’s absence, before 9.00 am.

Children who oversleep are encouraged to attend school as soon as possible, even if it is late in the morning session.

Punctuality EVERY DAY pupils should be on time at 8.55 am to line up with their class, and not routinely signed in through the electronic system. However, if on occasion, your child is going to be late, please telephone the school office before 9.00 am.

To ensure all children are safe - pupils arriving after 9.00 am must enter through the main school entrance and be signed in on the electronic system by their parent/carer. Year 6 pupils may sign themselves in.

Persistent lateness can have a huge impact upon your child’s progress and learning Numeracy and Literacy are taught at the beginning of the school day with Intervention groups and guided reading groups. Children arriving late are then expected to join their class or group after the start of the session. This is disruptive to the whole class and often causes embarrassment to the child ‘joining’ the class late.

Assemblies are also held immediately after registration and children arriving late on a regular basis are missing out on the involvement, celebration and inclusion of school life.

Term Time Absences The School Holiday Schedule is sent home early in the Autumn Term. New Department of Education Legislation now states that from 1 September 2013, there is no entitlement for parents to take their child on holiday in termtime. Any application for leave will be in exceptional circumstances only, at the discretion of the Headteacher. A TERM-TIME HOLIDAY WILL NOT BE DEEMED AN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCE. The Education Welfare Officer may visit you if your child’s attendance is deemed unacceptable for their progress within school. The pupil attendance target for Mesne Lea Primary School is at least 95%. Please try to arrange any medical appointments out of school time.

School Uniform - Infant & Juniors - KS1 & KS2 At Mesne Lea Community Primary School we believe school uniform contributes to the ethos of our school and provides a sense of identity and belonging for all children. All children are asked to wear our school uniform which is smart, comfortable and easy to obtain.

Ties are available at Molly Uniform Shop, Memorial Road, Walkden. They also provide a service to put the Mesne Lea logo on jumpers, cardigans and book bags (this is not compulsory).

P E /games kits should be kept in school in a drawstring bag clearly marked with your child’s name. Suitable P E bags can be purchased from the school office. EYFS children do not require a P. E. Kit but will need to purchase a pair of black pumps for the Nativity performance.

Football kit Plain white t-shirt, black shorts, trainers, football boots Swimming Year 3 will attend a term of swimming lessons during the academic year. Your child will require swimming costumes, towel and swimming caps for girls. No long shorts, or bikinis are allowed.

A large amount of unnamed clothing is disposed of at the end of each term. Please ensure all your child’s clothing is named.

Taking Care of Property Each half term many children misplace items of their clothing at school. It is important that all children have their clothing, including coat, clearly marked with their name.

PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately, school cannot be held responsible for any expensive items brought into school.

Please Note: Mobile telephones should only be used by children walking independently to or from school, and should not be used once in school.

Admission of Pupils An application form for admission of your child to Mesne Lea Community Primary School is available from Admissions and Exclusions Team on 0161 793 2500 (choose the Admissions option).

Placing your child’s name on a waiting list, or length of time on the waiting list, does not automatically guarantee a place at the school. The standard admission number at Mesne Lea School is currently 60 and when the school is over-subscribed, places will be offered using the criteria set down by Salford Education Committee and approved by the School’s Governing Body. A link to this is available on the website.

Parents who are considering sending their child to the school are invited to make an appointment to visit the school, meet the Headteacher, obtain a school prospectus and receive other helpful information.

The Curriculum The ‘Curriculum’ covers everything the school offers, both inside and outside the classroom, to promote children’s learning and development. A broad and balanced programme of study for all children includes; school assemblies, musical productions, inter-school sports, visitors who deliver additional learning, extra-curricular clubs, class trips and residential visits.

Core Subjects:

Literacy We believe reading and writing are the key to successful learning. Generous time is given to the teaching of English, both as a separate subject and across other curriculum areas.

All children participate in a daily literacy lesson where skills are developed and improved through a combination of shared, guided and independent work. These are then developed and practiced through the whole curriculum. Synthetic phonics are taught through the letters and sounds programme in KS1 and Early Years, in order to embed early reading skills.

Maths All children should leave Mesne Lea with a good acquisition of Numeracy skills.

Maths is a core subject and the children will receive at least one hour maths teaching every day. We place an emphasis on all children being competent at the key skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Problem solving is emphasised.

Science In following the National Curriculum Programme of Study, we provide a broad-based approach to Science, encouraging the children to question and hypothesise when things happen. There are many opportunities for scientific investigation with hands on activities to consolidate knowledge and develop understanding of the world around them.

We aim to deliver a rich, varied and exciting curriculum which develops children in a range of ways.

We believe high standards of teaching and a broad and rich curriculum go hand in hand and give children the life chances they deserve.

The school is non-denominational. Religious Education is Christian based. Parents who do not wish their children to take part in Assemblies may discuss alternative arrangements with the Headteacher.

ICT Computers are an essential curriculum tool and all children are given opportunities to develop their computer skills. As a skill based subject, it focuses on handling and graphic design.

Other subjects which incorporate ICT include:        

Religious Education The school is non-denominational. Religious Education is Christian based and follows Salford’s R.E. Syllabus.

Foreign Language We feel it is important for our pupils to experience different cultures and languages. At Mesne Lea School we teach French. In the Early Years/Foundation Stage this is done as part of the continuous provision. Key Stage 1 learn simple vocabulary through songs, games and other activities, Key Stage 2 follow a progressive curriculum.

Gifted and Talented Pupils Highly differentiated work or individual work is given to children who are Gifted or Talented. Extra activities may be provided to meet the needs of these children. Occasionally children are taught out of age groups for parts of the curriculum. We also work closely with the families of children who may receive specialised coaching to ensure their academic needs are met whilst in school

The Wider Curriculum At Mesne Lea, extra-curricular activities are recognised as important aspects of school life, giving children the opportunity to extend their experience in new areas and develop skills and particular talents. The children participate in various inter-school activities. Below are a list of some of the extra-curricular activities which take place;          

Musical Instruments A wide and varied selection of instrument tuition is offered to the children through the Music and Performing Arts Service (MAPAS). The instruments can be loaned through MAPAS, and include;      

Homework Many studies have proved the importance of home and school working together to improve educational performance. We ask parents to read, every night, with their children. Year 1 to Year 6 children will also have written homework. Children will be made aware of their weekly homework in the Home/School planner.

Scaled Scores For English reading and mathematics, key stage 2 test results have been reported as scaled scores, with 100 as the ‘expected standard’.

Progress Measures

INTERPRETING PROGRESS SCORES Progress scores will be centred around 0, with most schools within the range of -5 to +5.

• A score of 0 means pupils in this school on average do about as well at KS2 as those with similar prior attainment nationally.

• A positive score means pupils in this school on average do better at KS2 as those with similar prior attainment nationally.

• A negative score means pupils in this school on average do worse at KS2 as those with similar prior attainment nationally.

Discipline and School Rules High standards of behaviour are an expectation of all children at all times. Care, courtesy and consideration are important for us all, beginning with the Headteacher, staff and children. Respect for each other and property is expected from everyone. Our aim is to encourage children to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Praise and encouragement are used extensively by all staff to reinforce these standards. If children disregard or disobey instructions then, after due warning, sanctions are put into place. At all times we encourage a partnership approach to behaviour, including children, parents and staff.

Anti-Bullying Policy We believe that we have a duty to provide a safe environment for all our pupils. We agree that one of the most important elements of a successful anti-bullying strategy is to adopt a proactive approach. The curriculum will be used actively to address the underlying issues and look at ways of challenging inappropriate behaviour. We will ensure that pupils know how important it is to report bullying that they may have witnessed or suffered. We will take all reports of bullying seriously and all incidents will be thoroughly investigated.

School Meals and Snacks School Meals Citywide Catering Services will provide a healthy school meal for each pupil on school meals.

For Nursery and Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 school meals cost £10.00 per week and must be paid each Monday morning by 9.00 am, or alternatively you can pay the full half term if you wish. School lunches should be paid for via ParentPay, an online, secure payment system. If arrears of more than one week are accrued, Citywide Services may withdraw school meals for your child.

Nursery, Reception pupils participate in a family dining style lunch. They will be served lunch at their table which helps build and enhance part of their social development.

Government legislation was passed in September 2014 to give all pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 a school meal each day, free of charge. You can, of course, provide your child with a packed lunch, if you wish.

Junior children can purchase fruit juice from the school kitchen for 35p per day, this money should be brought in daily, and be paid to the kitchen staff.

Parents wishing to provide a packed lunch for their child should bear in mind the School’s policy to encourage healthy eating. All packed lunches should be in a plastic container clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. No fizzy drinks are allowed and chocolate bars or cakes should be kept to a minimum. Guidance on healthy lunches can be found on our website www.mesnelea.salford.sch.uk To change from school meals to packed lunches and vice-versa, please fill in, sign and date a change of circumstance form, available in the school foyer area. This should be done at the end of a half term in readiness for the new half term.

Healthy Snacks in School Children in EYFS and KS1 years are entitled to a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day under the National School Fruit Scheme. KS2 children may bring in a piece of fresh fruit. In addition, children in KS1 and KS2 can order a piece of toast and pay for this on a termly basis (this is currently 80p per week). No other snacks are allowed in school.

Milk School milk is available by order at the office. In the interests of efficient administration we request that children having school milk pay for the full term. Children do not pay for milk until their fifth birthday. The cost of milk is subsidised by the EC Intervention Board.

Water We encourage all children to drink water while in school and during lessons, to keep them hydrated. There are water fountains available to all children. A water bottle, with unflavoured water, labelled with your child’s name may be brought into school each day.

Charging for Trips and Visits Mesne Lea children have opportunities to go on a wide range of trips and visits, which enable them to broaden their experiences and develop their schoolwork. These visits include day trips and for the older children, residential visits.

These visits usually involve additional costs, which cannot be supported from the school budget. The provision of such trips, therefore, relies on the voluntary contribution from the parents/carers of each pupil to meet the cost.

School cannot prevent a child attending day trips on the basis of parents not contributing, however, if sufficient numbers of parents cannot contribute toward the trip, then the visit may be not be viable, and therefore will not take place. We ask for your support in this matter.

If a child is absent for a trip that has been contributed for, we can only refund the payment if the venue and transport charges are not applied to school.

For overnight trips, which take place in term time, school must charge parents/carers for the residential element of the trip. Deposits will not be refunded.

Safeguarding All staff regularly undertake safeguarding training      

School has a perimeter fence with secure vehicle gates. Vehicles are not permitted onto the school grounds between 8.30 am to 4.00 pm.

There is internal CCTV within school For the safety of the children, parents/carers should not bring vehicles onto the school premises.

No smoking is allowed at any time in the school grounds.

Dogs are not allowed in the school grounds All visitors must report to the office on arrival.

Pastoral Care Special Educational Needs Children with SEN are identified as early as possible at Mesne Lea School. By working in partnership with parents to set targets for improvement within Individual Support Plans (ISP’s), we are able to develop effective ways of overcoming barriers to learning. The children with SEN are supported with a wealth of resources. These include differentiated learning materials, special equipment and individual or group support.

We also have links with external agencies such as Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychology Service and the School Nurses who can offer advice and, where appropriate, individual programmes to aid in children’s learning. The school SENCO is in the process of obtaining an SEN Diploma.

Arrangements for Pupils with Disabilities Physical access to Mesne Lea is generally good for those with disabilities. The new school is fully accessible and compliant with all current DDA requirements;     

Teaching staff make every effort to ensure that pupils with special needs or disabilities have access to as much of the curriculum as possible.

Child Protection Parents should be aware that the school will take any reasonable action to ensure the safety of its pupils. In cases where the school has reason to be concerned that a child may be suffering ill-treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, staff have no alternative but to follow the school policy and the LA guidelines on Child Protection, and reserve the right not to inform parents in specific circumstances. A copy of the school policy can be inspected in school, and is also available on the school website. Mrs Finlay, Headteacher, and Miss Fisher, Learning Mentor, are the designated Child Protection Officers in school.

Health, Sex and Relationship Education Health Education is provided for all children in a manner appropriate to their age and development. Sex and Relationship Education is introduced sensitively and in context, according to our policy approved by staff and governors. A copy of the policy is available by request at the school office.

Discipline and School Rules High standards of behaviour are an expectation of all children at all times. Care, courtesy and consideration are important for us all, beginning with the Headteacher, staff and children. Respect for each other and property is expected from everyone. Our aim is to encourage children to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Praise and encouragement are used extensively by all staff to reinforce these standards. If children disregard or disobey instructions then, after due warning, sanctions are put into place. At all times we encourage a partnership approach to behaviour, including children, parents and staff.

Welfare Services We appreciate that parents try to co-operate with the School in routine matters but difficulties sometimes arise where there are medical or social problems. To help parents and children, therefore, the School works very closely with the Education Department and the School Health Authority.

Parents may telephone the School Clinic at any time to seek advice or treatment for their children.

School Clinic: 0161 206 2132/2138 In making full use of the above services, parents are asked to follow up all appointments made for them and to attend personally if their child is to be seen by a doctor, in order to answer questions about medical history and family background.

At the beginning of each school year, Parents/Carers must complete a contact/consent form so they can be contacted in case of emergency. This form also requests consent for your child to attend day trips, have internet usage and photo usage for the school website. The completion of this form is compulsory.

To help us understand and care for your child as well as you would like, please inform the School of any medical or social problems that are likely to affect him/her in school.

We also have a full time Learning Mentor, who works closely with children and families in school.

Complaints’ Procedure We pride ourselves at Mesne Lea School on being open and willing to speak to parents concerning their child’s education and welfare. Appointments can be made with members of staff by contacting the school office. In addition, the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher or Assistant Headteachers may be contacted, either by phoning or e-mailing the school office. If this process does not resolve the matter to your satisfaction, you are able to make a referral to the Governors. A copy of the procedure is available for inspection at school.

Reports, Open Days, Parent/Teacher Interviews We realise that we share with you the responsibility of caring for your child in every possible way. We try to keep you well informed about school progress and behaviour and we hope you will tell us about anything at home that is possibly disturbing your child. It is also encouraging to the teachers to hear from parents about any projects or books used regularly in school that their children have found particularly interesting or helpful. Information about pupils and the progress they are making is regularly sent to parents.

However, parents may find a visit to school more reassuring, to see their child’s class work and discuss progress with the teacher. Open days and parent-teacher interviews are normally held termly , but appointments can be made at any time in the school year for parents to come into School to talk about their children with the Class Teacher, Phase leader or Headteacher.

Early Years and KS1 children have a Home-School Record Book which enable a regular flow of communication regarding progress and reading. Junior children have a diary, it is most important that parents/carers see this each day, and report to the class teacher if they are misplaced. This link between home and school is vital to your child’s progress.

Newsletters In order to give parents accurate information about what is happening in school, specific or general newsletters are on the school website. A text is sent to parents/carers when new correspondence is posted, however please keep checking the website regularly. For those with no internet access, additional copies of correspondence can always be found in the school’s foyer area.
