Monday 29th January 2018 Our News!

The children are really learning lots through our topic of toys.

They have enjoyed reading non-fiction books all about toys to help them find out more information. They can name the different materials that toys are made from and recognise whether a toy is a new toy or a toy from the past.

A big thank you to the children who have brought in old toys to show to the class. It has been lovely to hear them talk so confidently about the toys to their audience. The children also listened beautifully whilst we showed them a doll that is nearly 100 years old! They wanted to find out lots of information about it and asked lots of questions.

Outside the children have been enjoying playing some traditional games from the past such as marbles, skittles, quoits and hopscotch. They have also been very good at taking turns.

The children have loved turning old socks into amazing sock puppets in their creative learning.

These will be great for acting out and using to tell their own stories with, using the puppet theatre. They have also listened carefully to understand and follow a set of instructions for how to make a traditional cup and ball game.

In mathematics the children have been amazing at learning to recognise all of the different coins and understanding each of their values. They are becoming more confident at using a combination of different coins, rather than just using 1p coins to make different amounts.

Outdoors in PE the children have been practising their kicking skills, learning to aim their kick at a target. Keep practising this at home too please!

The children are enjoying working in their different Funky Fingers groups each day to further develop their fine motor skills at different levels.

STARS OF THE WEEK Monty Moore for brilliant adding in mathematics and independent writing and Ella Kaye for completing lots of challenges.

Zachary Turner for applying his phonics well in his writing and George Coureau for being such a good leader when solving problems.

OUR LEARNING The Naughty Bus Over the next few weeks we will continue with our topic of toys by reading a book about a toy bus that is a little mischievous, called the Naughty Bus. In Literacy we will be thinking of lots of questions to ask the Naughty Bus about his adventures and we will have a go at writing our own Naughty Bus stories! We will also make WANTED posters and draw maps of where the Naughty bus has been. We will retell and recreate parts of the story through role play and small world activities. We will also learn a song about the Naughty Bus which tells of its adventures!

In Mathematics the children will be using positional and directional vocabulary to describe where they find the Naughty Bus. We will also move on to the concept of subtraction, using real objects to help them, such as passengers getting off a bus or toys left in the shop. We will also explore ordinal numbers such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

In PE the children will be practising and improving their throwing and catching skills. As they get better and more confident they will be able to throw at a target, throw further and catch with a smaller ball.

In Phonics we will be learning the Phase 3 digraphs (letters that go together to make one sound) sh, ch, th, ng, ai and ee. We will practise reading words and sentences with these phonemes in.

Outside the children will investigate sending toy vehicles down ramps, predicting which will travel the furthest and measuring the distance travelled. They will also explore painting and mixing colours by rolling toy vehicles through paint and observing the marks that they create.

Also the Naughty Bus liked to look at its own reflection, this has encouraged the children to want to find materials that are reflective or not as well as exploring which toys can be pushed or pulled to make them move.

Next week on Wednesday we will going on our very first school trip!! The Naughty Bus will be visiting our school to take us on our very own adventure - A ride around our local area! A separate letter will follow about this shortly.

REMINDERS Spare Clothes We have no spare socks or tights left in school. Please could anyone who has borrowed any please return them to school? If you have any unwanted items such as underwear or socks that you may be getting rid of, please could you donate them to us? Thanks!

Parent and Carer Volunteers If you would be able to help next Wednesday 7th February in the morning for our Naughty Bus trip, please could you let your child’s class teacher know.

We are also in need of helpers to listen to children in read in our classes. If this is something you would like to do please let us know.

Names in Uniform PE day is very busy, as I’m sure that you can imagine. Please can you help us by ensuring all uniform is clearly named? It is very difficult to return muddled up clothes to the right owner when they are un-named. Many thanks.

Collecting From School Please can you ensure that it is an adult that is sent to collect your child at the end of the school day. We have a duty to make sure that they get home safely. If there are to be any changes to the end of day routine or you have any problems with collecting your child, then please ring school to let us know. Thank you.

Head Lice We seem to have a number of children suffering with this problem. Please can long hair be tied back for school at all times and can we please ask that you regularly check your child’s hair and treat them before they return to school if you spot any. Thank you.

TALK HOMEWORK Talk for Numbers Give toys different prices. Add up and find the cost of two toys altogether.

Find out how much change the toy shopkeeper would give you if you had 10p and bought one of the toys.

Practise making a particular amount, for e.g. 10p using different combinations of coins.

Find different sizes of toys. See if you can put them in order of size, height or length. Use the vocabulary – longest, shortest, tallest, shortest, largest, biggest, and smallest.

Place a toy in different places and positions. See if a grown up can describe where the toy is using positional language, for e.g. on the chair, beside the bed, amongst the cushions.

Play skittles. How many did you have to begin with? How many knocked down? How many are left?

Count out some objects/toys at home. Ask your child to count them then tell them you are going to take some away. Count the ones taken away and the total of toys left. Verbally say the number sentence, e.g. 3 – 2 = 1 Find 1 less than a group of objects or a given number.
