How to support your child’s learning at home

Important Assessments are taking place for Year Five on Thursday 7th July, Wednesday 13th July and Friday 15th July.

Please avoid fasting on these days.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Homework Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go.

It must be completed to an acceptable standard which means that it must be at least as good as the work children produce in class, and written tasks must be completed in blue pen.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Heseldon runs a drop in homework club on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

We have super new journals full of helpful tips to support work at home. Please ensure that journals are signed and handed in each week.

Summer Term 2

English: We are working hard on Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ this half term and are using all of our drama skills to help us understand the motivations and actions of the different characters in the play. By looking closely at the language in the play we are learning to use vocabulary for effect, and are exploring poetic devices including iambic pentameter. At the end of the unit we will write and perform short play scripts based on the events in the text.

Creative Curriculum: A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Whilst enjoying the wonderful story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we will delve into the world of Shakespeare and the time that he wrote his plays.

What words did Shakespeare bring into everyday usage?

Maths: This half term, we will be consolidating work on written calculations using formal methods and developing our knowledge on place value so that we can describe and extend number sequences.

We will also be learning about fractions and percentages where we will at times need to apply the skill of rounding. Later in the term, we will look at measures (length, mass, capacity and time) and finish with further work on area and volume.

Science: Forces This half term, we will be investigating force, gravity, air resistance and speed using parachutes. We will be looking at buoyancy and the influences of what causes objects to float or sink. We will be carrying out our own experiments and investigations and writing up what we do and our findings.

Geography: We will be looking at Shakespeare’s home town; identifying it on a map: following in his footsteps around Stratford- upon- Avon and looking more closely at the things he would have seen during Tudor times.

History: We will be researching the life and times of Shakespeare in order to write a biography.

Then, we will be making our own vellum and quills. We will use these to write Shakespearean quotes and then sealing them with wax, using stamps we have made our selves.

In addition, we shall be looking at the Globe theatre where actors of Shakespeare‘s day were ‘treading the boards’ and where his famous plays were watched by many.

Theatre Visit: ‘All the World’s A Stage’ Park Visit: As summer is now upon us, the children will be observing seasonal, wildlife and plants in the local park. Photographs will be taken and discussions about what they have seen will take place.

is a 60 minute KS2 History Play. It’s an interactive play that covers many of the main themes of KS2 Tudor study. The play is an original story which follows the antics of William Shakespeare as he struggles to write a new play at the request of Elizabeth 1. We meet Walter Raleigh, Francis Drake and Members of ‘The Lord Chamberlain’s Men’ who all help or hinder Will.
