Blackpool Aspire Academy Year 8 Making Informed Choices Now that you are approaching option time, it is very important to make careful choices regarding the subjects you wish to study for GCSE and Btec. At Blackpool Aspire Academy there are a number of subjects which are compulsory based on government requirements thus ensuring that all students continue to study a broad and balanced curriculum, which provides excellent preparation for the future.

We also recognise that by now you may have certain subject strengths and interests. If you have clear ideas on a career, this may influence your choice of GCSEs or Btecs. It is also worth remembering that if you wish to study a subject at A level, for most subjects, it is better to have studied them at GCSE or Btec first.

You will receive plenty of personalised advice and guidance as you make your option choices and I hope that you find this booklet and the whole process both useful and supportive.

Advice and guidance from Mrs Hanlon-Catlow – Deputy Principal, Mr Blackwell and Mrs Rawson - Key Stage Leaders.

This booklet provides information about all the courses available for Key Stage 4 students at Blackpool Aspire Academy for September 2016. We have spent much time discussing and planning our curriculum offer because we recognise the importance of continuing educational opportunity and achievement. All students currently in Year 8 are required to stay in education or training until they are 18.

All students will study GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science and also a Level 2 qualification in PE/Sport (GCSE/BTEC).

THE ENGLISH BACCALAUREATE The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) recognises where students have secured good grades in English, Mathematics, two Sciences, a Modern Foreign Language and either Geography or History. This is a nationally recognised and sought after performance framework and we encourage and support students in working to achieve it. Therefore, we encourage students to consider taking a Modern Foreign Language and either Geography or History in their options choices.

OPTIONS DISCUSSIONS All students will have a one-to-one discussion with the Senior Leadership Team. This discussion will focus on each student’s current progress levels, attitude to learning and career aspirations. We will discuss which subjects you are achieving well in, which subjects you enjoy and which subjects will most likely help with your choice of career, if you currently have one in mind.

It is vital that students and parents/carers think carefully about option choices as there will be no chance to change once courses start.

It is hoped that the information in this booklet will give students and parents/carers a clear picture of the different courses offered. We hope that decisions about these courses will be made in partnership between students, parents/carers and school.

Please use the last page of this booklet to begin to collate your ideas together. Make sure you bring it to your Options Discussion.

SUBJECTS TAKEN BY ALL STUDENTS All students will follow courses leading to GCSEs in Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, either Combined Science or Separate Science and either BTEC or GCSE Physical Education. Citizenship, PHSE, CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance) and RE will be taught through the curriculum and Aspirational Days.

All students currently in sets 1 for Science will follow a course leading to GCSEs in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. All other students will follow a course leading to a Combined GCSE in Science worth two GCSEs.

OPTION BLOCK A In the first option block, students must choose ONE GCSE course. The choices are:*History *Geography *Computer Science

OPTION BLOCK B In the second option block, students must choose ONE course. It must be different to that chosen in Option Block A. The courses on offer are a mixture of GCSEs and BTECs. All BTEC courses are vocational qualifications. The choices are:*History *Geography *French *BTEC Travel & Tourism

OPTION BLOCK C In the third option block you must choose ONE course. It must be different from those chosen in Blocks A and B. Again there is a mixture of GCSE and BTEC course. The choices are:*NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Food and Cookery. *GCSE Separate Science (compulsory for Set 1 Science only) *GCSE Business Studies *BTEC ICT

OPTION BLOCK D In the fourth option block you must choose ONE course. It must be different from those chosen in Blocks A, B and C. Again there is a mixture of GCSE and BTEC course. The choices are:*GCSE Art (Textiles/Fine Art) *GCSE Dance *GCSE RE *BTEC Music *BTEC Performing Arts - Acting

In summary, you must choose one course from Option Block A, one from Option Block B, one from Option Block C and one from Option Block D.

It is vital that you make the right choices for you as, due to the complexity of the timetable, there will be no chance of changing options once the courses have started.

ALLOCATION OF PLACES Students are asked to indicate their options choices on the option sheet provided. Please note that you are also asked to choose a second option in each of the four option blocks.

Every effort will then be made to give you first choices, however, we cannot guarantee that every choice made will be granted. This will be subject to the availability of staffing and the viability of the course (if the course is under subscribed it will not run).

GCSE English Language

What is GCSE English Language about?

The AQA syllabus followed at Blackpool Aspire Academy fulfils the statutory requirements for the National Curriculum. The attainment targets of speaking and listening, reading and writing are examined in detail.

What will I learn?

GCSE English Language is designed on the basis that students should read and be assessed on high quality, challenging texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

For GCSE English Language, students should:  read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literary non-fiction as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism  read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts  summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts  use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing  write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately  use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately  acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language  listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively How will I learn?

The English Language courses at Blackpool Aspire Academy High School are an excellent preparation for English Language, English Literature, Media and Communications courses at a higher level.

What is GCSE English Literature about?

The AQA syllabus followed at Blackpool Aspire Academy fulfils the statutory requirements for the National Curriculum. The attainment targets of speaking and listening, reading and writing are examined in detail.

What will I learn?

Studying GCSE English Literature should encourage students to read widely for pleasure, and as a preparation for studying literature at a higher level.

For GCSE English Literature. students should:  read a wide range of classic literature fluently and with good understanding, and make connections  across their reading  read in depth, critically and evaluative, so that they are able to discuss and explain their  understanding and ideas  develop the habit of reading widely and often  appreciate the depth and power of the English literary heritage  write accurately, effectively and analytically about their reading, using Standard English  acquire and use a wide vocabulary, including the grammatical terminology and other literary and linguistic terms they need to criticise and analyse what they read.

How will I learn?

GCSE students learn by reading and discussing a wide range of literary and media texts from a broad spectrum of genres, cultures and historical periods and by writing in a variety of contexts.

This qualification is assessed entirely by written examinations at the end of the course.

Homework will be set by individual teachers each week. Tasks could include skills practice, research and reading exercises. In the build up to your exams there is a workbook you will be expected to complete. Students will need to read and re-read the Literature texts independently and learn quotations to use in the examinations. Students will be provided with set texts and revision material to aid independent study.

Where will it take me?

A grade ‘4’ in English is essential for entry to reputable Further and Higher Education Institutions and is often used by employers as a selection criterion. The English Language and Literature courses at Blackpool Aspire Academy High School are an excellent preparation for English Language, English Literature, Media and Communications courses at a higher level.

GCSE Mathematics

(EB)

What is GCSE Mathematics about?

The GCSE Mathematics examination is the means of assessing each student’s achievement in mathematics during Key Stage 4. All students will follow a linear scheme of work and successful candidates will be awarded a grade from 1 to 9, where 9 is the highest. There will be two tiers of entry: Foundation (grades 1 to 5) and Higher (grades 4 to 9).

What will I learn?

By the end of the course candidates are expected to be able to:  Recall mathematical facts and apply these facts in real life situations;  Present mathematical work, including graphs, tables and diagrams in a way which can be understood and interpreted by others;  Select the relevant mathematical skills to apply to a problem or situation;  Cope with mathematical calculations with or without a calculator;  Use mathematical skills to solve problems.  Demonstrate high levels of conceptual understanding in mathematics  What coursework will I need to do?

There is no coursework for GCSE Mathematics.

How will I be assessed?

Students will take three 90-minute examinations at the end of Year 11, one of which will be without the use of a calculator.

What homework will I have?

It is essential to complete homework in mathematics as it helps to consolidate classroom learning.

Homework will be set and completed once a week.

Any special requirements?

All students are expected to have a pen, pencil, ruler, pair of compasses, protractor, and a scientific calculator with them for every lesson.

Where will it take me?

Maths is for everyone. It is a very important qualification for all jobs and the ability to tackle mathematical tasks is one which you will continue to use throughout your life. It is a requirement to access most jobs, essential for entry into all reputable Further and Higher Education institutes, and is expected for apprenticeships.

GCSE AQA Combined Science

What is GCSE Core Science about?

This course encourages students to develop their interest and enthusiasm for science and develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods. It also enables students to acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works.

What will I learn?

You will learn how science works and its essential role in society. All students study a core of scientific principles in biology, physics and chemistry. You will learn how to acquire scientific skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for progression to further learning.

Course Structure Students will study units of work, in each of biology, chemistry and physics, leading to GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11 and two awards in combined science. The examinations make up 100% of the final mark. All GCSE examinations will take place at the end of Year 11. There will be two tiers of entry: Foundation (grades 1 to 5) and Higher (grades 4 to 9).

GCSE AQA Art and Design (Textiles) What is GCSE Art & Design?

The art and design course operates in modules that cover a variety of media and techniques, to produce artwork in both two and three dimensions.

There are two components of work: Component 1 – Portfolio (60%) Your portfolio will include a variety of skills including research of different artists the development of your ideas, refining ideas and presenting a final solutions. Within your portfolio you may cover: Fashion design and illustration, costume design, constructed textiles, printed and dyed textiles, surface pattern, stitched and/or embellished textiles, soft furnishings and/or textiles for interiors.

That in total shows explicit coverage of the four assessment objectives.

Component 2 – Externally set assignment (40%) You will respond to a chosen starting point from an externally set assignment which is issued by AQA this will relate to your chosen discipline (Textiles). You will have time to prepare, research and plan ideas in readiness for a 10 hour sustained, focused study.

What will I learn? (Textiles) You will learn about techniques of fabric manipulation, drawing and surface decoration as well as work from artists and cultures which will be evident in your own work.

Skills will include: mark-making, printing techniques, using charcoal, pastels, pen and ink, crayons and pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic, found materials, clay, different papers and surfaces on which to work.

GCSE Business Studies What is GCSE Business Studies about?

Knowledge of how and why businesses operate will be of great relevance to all young people, as they finish their education and enter the world of work. Businesses are part of our everyday lives, providing us with the products we need, communicating relentlessly with us through advertising, providing employment and inventing new products and services that transform how we live. This course focuses on what businesses are and how they organise themselves to achieve their objectives.

What will I learn?

What is a business and what does it do? The term ‘business’ can cover anything from a sole trader in a local market to a multinational corporation selling products to millions of people all over the world.

You will explore different types of business ownership and how these relate to the size and scale of a business, as well as how the type of ownership impacts on the responsibilities of the owners of a business. Combined with looking at types of business model, you can begin to understand how diverse the world of business is. You will use your understanding of business to investigate what businesses do by examining the aims and objectives they set, the importance of knowing their market and understanding the influence of their stakeholders.

What is GCSE Computer Science about?

Computer Science is a rapidly growing subject and is seen as an underpinning subject across science and engineering and indeed many other subjects. It involves the study of computers, including how they work and looking at the growth in the mobile device market.

What will I learn?

GCSE Dance What is GCSE Dance about?

GCSE Dance will enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of dance as a choreographer and performer. You will also appreciate the contribution of dance to your personal and social health, fitness and wellbeing and be aware of the range of opportunities and pathways available in dance.

What will I learn?

You will apply and adapt a wide range of skills and techniques effectively in performing and choreographing dance, including the ability to improvise. You will also create dance for a range of purpose and in response to different stimuli, and develop the ability to analyse, evaluate and appreciate dance.

What is GCSE French about?

Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Students learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education and employment. A GCSE in French is highly valued and sought after by employers not only for its linguistic skills but also for the communication and problem-solving skills you will develop when studying it at GCSE. What is the course structure?

As well as building on the topics you studied in KS3, you will be moving on to new topics such as media, travel and tourism, business and work.

You will continue to develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

What will I learn?

Linguistic skills and confidence are the keys to becoming successful communicators. When learning another language, students build on their literacy skills in English and improve their ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas.

Learning another language involves learning about another culture. This stimulates students’ curiosity and develops enquiring minds. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own culture and compare it with that of other countries.

What is GCSE Geography about?

Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. The course will give you the chance to get to grips with some of the big global questions and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which shape and change our world. So many of the world's current problems boil down to Geography, and we need the geographers of the future to help us understand them.

Geography at GCSE level is both challenging and rewarding. If you take an interest in our changing world, then this is the subject for you. Aspire Academy’s Geography department has been awarded ‘Centre of Excellence’ status by the Geographical Association for quality teaching and learning; in addition, last year’s exam results were amongst the best in school (77% A*-C).

What is GCSE History about?

GCSE History remains a very popular choice for students to study at GCSE and offers a highly valued and academic qualification which can lead to many other study paths in Further and Higher education. The GCSE consists of two exams both 1 hour and 45 minutes in length to be taken in the Summer of 2019.

What will I learn?

You will learn about how and why key events in world history occurred. You will learn how and why historic events occur and what effects these changes have had on the world. You will learn how to analyse and evaluate historical source evidence and learn about historians’ interpretations of events.

During your GCSE Studies you will focus on five key topics: Germany 1890-1945 Conflict and Tension 1918-1939 Britain: Health of the People. 1000- The Present Day Elizabethan England 1568-1603.

GCSE Religious Studies What is GCSE Religious Studies about?

Gone are the days when it was thought that the only career opportunities available with Religious Studies were being a vicar or nun! In the modern world it is not only accepted as an academic qualification when applying for any number of professions from journalism, the media and drama to nursing, the police, social work and the law, but it is also accepted as an entry qualification for university with the same status as all other subjects.

This course examines modern day problems and issues, including marriage, divorce, the environment, animal rights, war, medical ethics, law, evil, abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty. These are ongoing issues that will touch the lives of millions of people worldwide and maybe even yourself. We will also apply beliefs from religions to these issues.

What will I learn?

This course enables pupils to study the issues in greater depth and Full Course pupils will not be entered for any examinations until Year 11. With this added maturity, many pupils achieve outstanding results! Two religions are studied:a) Christianity, which deals not only with topics such as the existence of God, but also with relevant modern issues such as prejudice and discrimination, wealth and poverty, relationships and environment ethics - plenty of discussion and argument here! b) Islam, which always proves popular, as it is quite prevalent in the media.

NCFE Level 2 Food and Cookery What is Food & Cookery about?

This course is aimed at learning about the different areas of food preparation and cookery skills. This includes a significant amount of time learning about the knowledge and theory of the skills needed to prepare and deliver food in a nutritious way.

The course will prepare students who wish to consider entering the Food Industry as a career as they will have a broad understanding of the preparation of food from a theoretical perspective.

What will I learn?

Throughout the course you will focus on learning how to prepare and cook using basic skills, understand food and its functions in the body and in recipes, understand balanced diets and modification of recipes for health and plan and produce dishes for a purpose. It is worth noting that much of the learning is theory based, with only some practical element. By the end of course you will have produced a portfolio of written evidence covering these areas and will also be prepared to sit a written exam which is worth 25% of your final grade.

BTEC Information and Creative Technology (I&CT) What is BTEC I&CT about?

ICT plays an important role in nearly all careers in 21st Century businesses and is an important life skill as technology impacts on so many facets of our modern lives.  ICT is a useful route into further and higher education.  You could develop a career on the creative side of new media like web-design or online publishing, or you might follow a path that leads into even more technical ICT areas.  You might be more interested in managing the whole ICT process in a business, or you might use your software knowledge to take you into sales & marketing.

What will I learn?

In this course you will explore how digital technology impacts on the lives of individuals, organisations and society. The course is designed to cover all aspects of music and the music industry. It provides students with opportunities to perform, record, compose and listen to music of all types.

What will I learn?

BTEC First Award in Performing Arts (Acting) Studying acting helps boost confidence, decision-making, interaction with others and the ability to perform. It prepares the student for further study of Performing Arts at College and beyond as well as in many careers such as Law and Public Services.

BTEC Performing Arts (Acting) is a vocational course where students have the opportunity to explore the Performing Arts Industry. The necessary qualities to make good progress during this course are excellent attendance and a high degree of independent learning and self-discipline.

BTEC Performing Arts (Acting) is not an easy option; it demands committed work inside and outside of the lesson throughout the course. Students will be expected to build on skills and strategies explored during KS3 and enhance their knowledge by studying a variety of Theatre Practitioners such as Stanislavski, scripted and improvised plays and character research. Students will be required to act on their own and in a group.

A BTEC First Award is equivalent to one GCSE grade A*– C. What will I Learn?

The BTEC First in Sport aims to:    

What will I learn?

The course is about developing an overall understanding of fitness and how sport can affect your body. It also develops your leadership skills and your actual performance in sport. There will also be the opportunity to study how the human body works, why and how to train and what the limitations are. The course is assessed through completing 4 units of coursework. BTEC First Award in Travel & Tourism Travel and Tourism is an ideal subject to choose if you are interested in the travel and tourism industry; living in Blackpool, you should be!

It is a vocational subject in which students learn about how the travel and tourism industry operates on both local and global scales. Tasks are varied and range from booking holidays for specific customers to investigating sustainable tourism in the UK. What will I Learn?

Travel and Tourism classes tend to be small, allowing students more opportunity to be successful within the internal units. Currently, BTEC Travel and Tourism has a 100% pass rate within school.
